Hi –
The Presidential election results in Brazil are just in. And, I'm afraid I don't have good news at all.
Our newly elected next President is a man called Jair Bolsonaro. He is unapologetically racist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, and authoritarian.
And this win has empowered people who think like him to start acting violently on his behalf. When questioned about it, he just said "I can't control my supporters."
There have been at least 50 attacks just in the three weeks between the election turns. It's only getting worse. LGBT+ people and other marginalised groups are being rounded up, cornered, verbally, and physically abused. Two trans women were murdered, even!
This is exactly why we're launching All Out Brazil. We can train local LGBT+ activists, help fund grassroots projects to protect and improve LGBT+ lives, pressure authorities, and fight alongside the local movement against whatever threats come our way.
Brazil is one of the most dangerous countries for LGBT+ people in the world. Trans women are expected to live to just 35 years old. One of us is killed for being LGBT+ every 20 hours or so.
But we're a people-powered movement, so we need your help to make that happen.
Bolsonaro has a long history of inciting hate and violence. During his time in Congress, he's said:
To a congresswoman: "I wouldn't rape you, you don't deserve it because you're too ugly."
"I would rather have a dead son than a gay one."
"A police officer that doesn't kill isn't a police officer."
"The biggest mistake made by the military dictatorship was that they didn't kill enough people."
He even said during the election that he would "end all forms of activism in Brazil."
Well, I'm Brazilian, an activist, a lesbian, and I am not going anywhere.Bolsonaro and his supporters do not scare me. I will fight for the rights, the safety, and the dignity of all LGBT+ Brazilians for as long as I can. But I need the support of All Out members around the world to get All Out Brazil off the ground.

Thanks,
Ana
All Out Campaigner
