Miyako the elephant bites on a steel bar for entertainment

Dear friends,
For 44 years, Miyako has lived alone in a concrete zoo enclosure. For 44 years, she has had nothing to do but walk around in circles and bite on a steel bar. For 44 years, she has suffered. It is time to say no more.
Miyako the elephant was taken from her family in Thailand when she was just six months old. She has lived at the Utsunomiya Zoo in Japan ever since, robbed of any chance to interact with other elephants. Her behavior signals that she is depressed, bored, and lonely.
Elephants are incredibly intelligent and social animals. Just like humans, they form intense bonds with their babies and mourn their dead. Forcing an elephant to live for 44 years without any interaction with other elephants is just as cruel as forcing a person to live in solitary confinement for decades.
Elephants in Japan is working to help Miyako and get legislation passed prohibiting zoos from isolating elephants. With the help of over 400,000 Care2 members, this same group had negotiated better conditions for Hanako, the world’s loneliest elephant.
Unfortunately, Hanako tragically died before the Inokashira Park Zoo could implement the changes we demanded. But Miyako is younger, and if we act quickly, we can save her from suffering the same sad fate as Hanako. Sign the petition to demand that no elephant in Japan is ever again forced to live alone in a tiny concrete enclosure.
Thank you,

Lacey K.
