Dear friends,
The Oregon Zoo euthanized Packy. They beat Rose-Tu with a bullhook so severely that she was left with over 176 wounds. They tried to breed Chendra with Tusko, who belonged to an entirely different sub-species of elephant. We must stop the Oregon Zoo's cruelty now!
The Oregon Zoo claims that they are running an elephant conservation program. But they have never introduced any of their elephants into the wild. In fact, the only times that living elephants have ever left the Oregon Zoo is when they've been sold to circuses or other zoos.
The USDA cited the Oregon Zoo with an animal welfare violation because of Rose-Tu's beating, but the abuse didn't end there. Medical records by the zoo's own veterinarians have noted evidence of repeated bullhook use on Chendra and the now deceased Pet.
In addition to the attempt at breeding Chendra with Tusko, the Oregon Zoo ignored basic scientific principles and bred Packy with his sisters. Several of the resulting babies died during infancy. It is clear that the zoo is not breeding the elephants for conservation purposes. The baby elephants have proven to bring in huge crowds and therefore huge profits.
The Oregon Zoo is #1 on Care2's list of worst elephant attractions in the world. While our ultimate goal is to free all of the elephants held captive there, we must try to make their lives better in the meantime. Sign this petition to stop the zoo from torturing their elephants with cruel bullhooks, unethical breeding, and irresponsible business transactions.
