Just before the elections here in Brazil, a young trans woman was beaten up with an iron bar in Nova Iguaçu, near Rio de Janeiro. She heard one of the attackers say: "I hope Bolsonaro wins to kill this garbage."
Days later, a trans woman was stabbed to death in the downtown area of São Paulo. A witness said the attackers were shouting "Bolsonaro" during the attack.
In this climate of fear following the election of Jair Bolsonaro as our next president, trans people in Brazil must rely on help coming from groups that offer protection and safe spaces more than ever before.
That's why we're raising funds to support groups like Casa 1, in São Paulo, and Casinha, in Rio, who provide direct support and shelter to trans people at risk. They're doing all they can, but this unprecedented crisis has left them in a tight spot, with their capacity at the limit.
Yesterday, on the Trans Day of Remembrance, we commemorated the lives lost to acts of anti-transgender violence.
Brazil already has the highest rate of trans murders in the world. But the hateful rhetoric of our new president boosts the transphobes and gives them apparent justification for their crimes.
That's why groups like Casa 1, Casinha, and their safe spaces for these vulnerable people are so immensely important. And that's why supporting them must be our priority right now.
Friends, I have been blown away by the support and solidarity that All Out members have shown to us here in Brazil in the last few weeks. Together, we launched All Out Brazil and delivered a massive petition to help protect LGBT+ lives in Brazil.
