Japan forces transgender people to be sterilised before being legally recognised as their gender. This must end now.

Dear friends,
For many transgender people, becoming legally recognised as their true gender is an important part of their transitioning process. Not all transgender people want to have surgery — some simply want to be recognised by society as a gender different to the one they were assigned at birth. And yet, in Japan, to legally change gender requires permanent removal of testicles or ovaries — that is, sterilisation.
The United Nations World Health Organisation condemns forced sterilisation, and has declared it a human rights violation. That's why Care2 is campaigning for an end to the forced sterilisation of transgender people in Japan.
Thank you,
P.S. There is no medical need for forced sterilisation, and many other countries allow people to change their legal gender without any surgery. Please sign to help transgender people in Japan avoid forced sterilsation.
