Dear friends,
Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil's new president, openly praises torture and political violence. And his supporters are turning his hateful rhetoric into brutal action.
Since early October:
- a transgender woman was stabbed to death in São Paulo and another trans woman was beaten up with an iron bar;
- three land activists were murdered in the Amazon;
- several women across the country reported having been beaten or harassed for wearing anti-Bolsonaro stickers.
And the list of recent hate crimes goes on. But while intolerance takes to the streets, activists and human rights defenders must organise to provide physical, legal, and psychological protection to those at risk.
That's why All Out and Nossas, a civic participation organisation in Brazil where I work, have joined forces to provide emergency funds to groups like Casa 1, a shelter for LGBT+ youth in São Paulo.
Young LGBT+ people who are kicked out of their homes by their own families now face extreme danger out on the streets. And as the rhetoric of hate gains traction, the shelter is filling up quickly. They just don't have the financial resources to increase their capacity.
All Out members helped fund the launch of All Out Brazil. That's already being put to work with a recent Supreme Court campaign where more than 250,000 people signed a petition to demand that discrimination against LGBT+ people be treated as a crime in Brazil.
Now, we need your help to support groups like Casa 1 in Brazil who are working on the front lines to protect LGBT+ Brazilians from hate and intolerance.
Thanks for going All Out,
Mariana Ribeiro
Director at Nossas
