Access forbidden! Error 403
Luc, this is the kind of message you might see when trying to visit the All Out website or other LGBT+ content in countries like Yemen and Sudan.
Their governments block any online content they regard too gay, leaving LGBT+ people without crucial access to online communities that offer safe spaces and support.
They wouldn't be able to do this without the help of companies like Netsweeper. This Canadian company provides censorship software to governments around the world – including filters for LGBT+ content.
Netsweeper's filters also flag HIV/AIDS organisations and deny access to life-saving information.
They are violating international human rights guidelines, yet Canada has provided financial and trade support to Netsweeper.
We will be writing to the Canadian government to let them know how their resources are being used. But we still need your help, Luc.
Netsweeper has recently admitted internal changes are needed, but research by Canadian group Citizen Lab shows that their filter targeting LGBT+ content was still active as of December 4.
Thanks for going All Out!
Matt and the All Out team
