A Response to Eric Blanc's Interview on Dead Pundit Society From a West Virginia Teacher
and Strike Leader ---- By Michael Mochaidean ---- On a recent interview with the Dead
Pundit Society podcast, episode "Teachers Strike Wave 2019: Denver Edition w/ Eric Blanc"
writer and journalist Eric Blanc argued that the recent wave of education strikes are
directly related to the 2016 Bernie Sanders campaign, and through this, DSA as a whole. In
the interview Blanc reflects back on the February 2018 West Virginia teacher strike that
have since sparked a wave of teacher strikes over similar issues. ---- In the interview
Blanc broadly connects the strikes to the Bernie Sanders campaign and draws a very direct
connection to the West Virginia strike:
"... if you look at the Bernie Sander campaign and the support that it got in places like
West Virginia or Arizona, where[Sanders]won handily, there was clearly an indication that
significant sectors of working people, and young people, were looking for a different type
of politics ... for whatever seemed like a viable alternative to politics as usual. And so
the Bernie Sander's campaign ... galvanized a lot of people and some of the most important
people that it galvanized were in fact the small group of socialists that launched and
initiated the West Virginia strike. The core group of organizers that for months built up
to the West Virginia strike first got involved organizing with each other through the DSA
and that DSA was born basically out of the Bernie Sander campaign."[1]
Blanc's assessment of this relationship between the Sanders campaign, DSA, and the teacher
strikes is his connection between the small group of socialists in the Kanawha Valley DSA,
particularly one of the strike leaders, Emily Comer, and their political bridge-building
between Bernie's campaign and DSA politics.
Assumptions on the Strike
Blanc assumes a number of things about the 2016 Sanders campaign in West Virginia. For
one, during the Democratic primary West Virginia's 55 counties went to Bernie, with Bernie
receiving 51% of the vote to Hillary's 36%. Trump would later go on to win all fifty-five
counties, but this time at a rate of 68% to Hillary's 26%. Rather than viewing Sanders'
success in the primary as indicative of a revolt against establishment figures such as
Clinton, Blanc argues that this campaign reached the economic best interests of the white
working class - but the numbers certainly complicate that narrative.
More critical to the narrative of the West Virginia strike is that Blanc attempts to draw
a direct line between two teacher organizers, Jay O'Neal and Emily Comer. Both Jay and
Emily are indeed DSA members and were politicized in many ways from the Sanders campaign,
but what this narrative leaves aside is the countless others who were politically active
but were not members of DSA or participants in the Sanders campaign.
Narrowing the Narrative
Nicole McCormick, an active union organizer and co-founder of the Facebook page where most
of the initial West Virginia organizing took place, is not a member of DSA, nor are Erica
Newsome, April Estep, or Alec Hunt - all moderators and original members of the page. What
did make the West Virginia strike successful was less about ties to the DSA and Sanders
and more about the necessity for an online platform to unite disparate and disenchanted
union members across the state, many of whom were angry at the 2016 election results and
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice switching parties from Democrat to Republican. To write
the story and draw connection of the West Virginia teacher strike from the standpoint of
simply one or two organizers paints a narrow portrait of the struggle and weaves a
misleading picture that is more favorable to a future Sanders' campaign, which Blanc
supports.[2]
Blanc also explains the 2018 walkouts in a way that covers up much of the organizing that
took place in other states which were not tied in any way to the 2016 Sanders campaign or DSA.
Take Katie Hancock for example, a Kentucky social worker and founder of the secret online
Facebook page ‘United We Stand.' Hancock initially created the page in the summer of 2017
after becoming irate at Governor Bevin's attempts to privatize and overhaul the state's
pension program. Not wanting to be as openly political as others, Hancock chose to create
a page that would go on to connect thousands of social workers across the state to fight
this reactionary piece of legislation. This was the precursor to the organizing tool - KY
120 United - that was started by Hancock's comrade, Nema Brewer. Neither Nema Brewer nor
Katie Hancock are members of DSA, nor is it clear that either of their organizing goals
were influenced by the 2016 Sanders campaign.
This is the case, too, with Rebecca Garelli, an organizer with the Arizona Educators
United Facebook group that inspired a statewide strike there. Garelli was a teacher in
Chicago during their famous 2012 strike. In many ways, the Chicago Teacher Strike (2012)
was the culmination of various strands of organizing - Occupy, social justice unionism,
anti-privatization - that were occurring at the time. Yet, their success was not tied to
any one socialist organization or political candidate, but a decentralized and politicized
base of militant activists. Garrelli took this experience with her to Arizona, where the
story of struggle against the dual forces of racism and privatization stood with her as
this strike progressed.
What's at Stake?
What appears to be more at stake here is laying the groundwork for Sanders' current
presidential run. By tying the recent upsurge in militant unionism to Sanders, it will be
easier for those who advocate within the left for backing the Sanders campaign in the
Democratic Party primary - and a critical junction for this is the current debate within
the DSA to throw its weight behind Sanders early on.
After all, if history remembers these strikes as the result of Bernie's unsuccessful yet
inspiring run, then his current run should be backed whole heartedly by the left as
promoting future waves of strikes and class struggle. This historical revisionism is
dangerous in that it both obfuscates the reality of these struggles and is, in many ways,
a move to isolate Bernie from meaningful left criticism.
Michael Mochaidean is an organizer and member the West Virginia IWW and WVEA. He is
currently co-authoring a book detailing the 2018 education walkouts, their triumphs and
limitations one year later.

Win: How the West Virginia Teacher Strike Was Won" and "The Lure of Elections: From

[2]See Eric Blanc, "Socialists, Democrats and the Dirty Break" Socialist Worker, August 6,
2018 and for a more detailed discussion see Blanc's piece "Red State Strikes and Electoral
Politics" in Socialist Strategy and Electoral Politics, A Report, Verso Books, 2019. Here
he makes the claim: "Broadly speaking, the victorious work stoppages in early 2018
demonstrate that class struggle at the ballot box and at the workplace can be mutually
reinforcing components of a resurgent working-class movement. Both the Bernie Sanders
campaign of 2016- which inspired and cohered many of West Virginia and Arizona's key
rank-and-file leaders- and the 2018 teacher walkouts posed a power alternative to the
union officialdom traditional reliance on electing and lobbying mainstream Democrats."

We can no longer hide the very serious humanitarian, political and social crisis that is
ravaging Venezuela. Nobody who has seen the floods of families that walk on foot Latin
America, with its few possessions, can deny the evidence. Not when there are almost three
million people who have embarked on that long road, perhaps with no return. The children
who cross the border, following their parents, on foot through the cold Colombian moor or
through the stormy Brazilian savanna, do not know about politics. Only of hunger and lack
of basic resources. ---- Meanwhile, state repression is intensifying. Fueled by the false
dichotomy between "revolution" and right-wing opposition, the government of Nicolás Maduro
clings to power. He knows that he is interested in reducing any criticism to a tantrum by
aspiring neoliberal managers of the country. That is why he can not allow opposition from
truly revolutionary sectors, workers, trade unionists, indigenous people, etc. It is true
that for a long time, demonstrations of all kinds against the government have been
answered with live ammunition. But also that a number of trade unionists and militant
workers, indigenous activists, human rights defenders have been brutally persecuted and
detained, and sometimes extrajudicially executed.
Government spokesmen insist that any criticism of their actions is "imperialist" and
"rightist". The right-wing opposition is delighted with this argument, because it is
practically presented as the only alternative. These rhetorics feed each other. In this
perverse way, those who seek to justify the Venezuelan government, despite the undeniable
humanitarian crisis, do precisely the game to the neoliberals, the aspiring supporters of
the people.
It is necessary to escape this trap, to break this bipolar cage. It is necessary to
undertake the construction of a true alternative, worker, trade union, indigenous, LGBT
... and above all, in freedom.
About us?
We are some and some anarchist comrades from different parts of the globe who are working
to set up a fund to support the libertarians and libertarians of Venezuela, in the face of
the serious crisis of subsistence and repression that the country is experiencing.
Why individualities and not organizations?
Because we understand that the Venezuelan political process has generated endless
discussions that do not allow agreements, nor sufficient consensus, to provide support as
organizations. In this way, people who wish may offer solidarity directly to the
anarchists who resist in the country.
How I can help?
You can collaborate in different ways:
1.-Sharing this message with your contacts and encouraging them to participate.
2.-Making translations to the language that you handle of the material that we take out.
3.-Contributing to the Solidarity Fund for the Venezuelan anarchists. They have decided
that they will allocate it to:
a.-Trade unionists arrested b.
b.-Purchase of food for striking workers and workers
c.-Purchase of medicines to pregnant women; boys and girls; people of the Third Age.
d.-Indigenous
e.-Transgender people in a street situation.
Who is in charge of the solidarity fund?
The initiative is based on libertarian individuals from various parts of the globe. The
management of the fund corresponds exclusively to Venezuelan comrades who will decide, in
view of the needs on the ground, the distribution of the funds among the aforementioned
groups. It has made a first collection of resources with direct contributions, to have
what to start, and now the intention is to ensure a monthly amount to sustain the fund.
For this, we will resort to the Patreon platform (see below).
What responsibility will Venezuelan anarchists have?
In addition to making the aid of the Solidarity Fund to the aforementioned groups, as
necessary, they commit to inform about each activity that is carried out and to follow up
on each case. They will present and render accounts of the aid received to all those who
wish to do so, in addition to making public the accounts to the sponsors and sponsors of
the fund.
How does it work? That I have to do?
We have decided to use Patreon, a digital platform of patronage, to guarantee regular
contributions that keep the fund alive. In this way, anyone who wants to join as a sponsor
or sponsor can set the amount you decide, however small and without commitment, which will
automatically leave each month of your account and reach the fund of solidarity.
To participate you just have to go to www.patreon .com, click on Sign up (top right) and
follow the instructions to create a user. In the process an email and a credit card or
bank account are associated. Then, with the session started, look for the profile of the
Countercultural and Self-managed Space La Libertaria at
https://www.patreon.com/lalibertaria . By clicking on the red button on the right, Become
a Patron you can choose one of the suggested levels or, select Make a Custom Pledge to set
the amount you will contribute monthly to the fund, from 1 euro or dollar, to whatever you
want . No help is small! Solidarity always adds up!
What will I receive in return?
In gratitude for the solidarity given, the Venezuelan anarchists will send:
* The Indymedia Venezuela digital publication: Elbow (A) Elbow
* The digital edition of the booklet tribute to Nerio Casoni: The Elegance of Direct
Action , (compilation of articles on Latin America and other topics).
* Press release and images of each activity carried out.
* Organic Coffee produced at the Culture Center La Libertaria.
* The satisfaction of mutual support is also included, even if it does not arrive by mail!
I still have doubts, it has not been clear to me how it works or I want to report any problems

All members of North East Anarchist Group have collectively agreed to highlight our
complete and unconditional condemnation of transphobia and bigotry. ---- We maintain a
strict policy of zero-tolerance towards trans-exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs). We
stand proudly in solidarity with trans women, trans men and non-binary people in their
struggle to obtain the ability to declare their own gender (or lack thereof) without
enduring a humiliating and Kafkaesque legal and medical obstacle course set up by the
state. ---- We support all trans women and are repulsed by misogynist abuse, doxing and
violence. ---- Trans women are women, and no amount of propaganda and lies from these
alleged feminists will ever affect a person's validity.
Attempting to define gender and gender roles as being determined by biology is sexist,
reductionist and dangerous. There is no danger to come of helping trans people obtain the
same basic human rights and dignities that already exist for privileged members of
society, and we reject the malicious lie commonly spread by TERFs that claims trans women
are covertly attempting to abolish women's rights and find the idea that predatory men
need to pretend to be women in order to abuse and assault women utterly ridiculous, as
there are already enough opportunities for them to do this (and for them to get away with
it) without going to the trouble of changing their identity. These abuses are already
enabled by the state, and by the police.
TERFs will allege that they are speaking in the interests of "free speech". However, it is
very revealing that they consistently and repeatedly use this free speech to attack,
demonise and dehumanise trans and non-binary people, rather than to add anything
constructive or original to public discourse. How many more times are we to have the same
monotonous ‘open debates' and ‘rational discussions' about whether or not trans people are
real people deserving of the same human rights as everyone else?
To clear up any potential confusion, we would additionally like to take this opportunity
to stress that we are in no way associated with a now-defunct Facebook page known as
‘North East Anarchists', which was often condemned by other anarchists for the transphobic
and class-reductionist content of its posts.
North East Anarchist Group is 100% committed to fighting TERFs and all other peddlers of
hatred and intolerance wherever they can be found, and will always be welcoming to trans
and non-binary comrades. There is no place for TERFs in anarchist circles, or indeed
anywhere in society.
It's sisterhood not cis-terhood! Please give @NotCisterUk a follow on Twitter and sign
their statement by sending an email to sisternotcister@protonmail.com or sending a message

CGT calls alone for the reasons agreed at its last Extraordinary Congress and in line with
the demands of the Feminist Movement. ---- PRESS OFFICE OF THE CONFEDERAL COMMITTEE OF THE
CGT ---- The General Confederation of Labor (CGT), has explained in a press release that
its call for General Strike, presented a few days ago in the Ministry of Labor and Social
Security, is on its own. This clarification follows the latest statements made by the
organization OTRAS, on the call for a General Strike for next March 8, in which they say
that they have called "together with the CGT and other unions a 24-hour strike". ---- CGT
states that its call for General Strike is individual, does not call with OTHERS or with
any other union or organization, and therefore does not know the details of the "strike
notice" of OTRAS and the conditions or reasons why from this training receive this right.
The anarcho-syndicalist organization once again underlines the reasons why they have
called the General Strike for the International Day of Working Women, reasons agreed at
the VII Extraordinary Congress held at the end of January in Mérida, and states that this
decision is in line with the demands of the Feminist Movement, both national and
international.
CGT reminds that the call for a 24-hour General Strike for next March 8 is addressed to
the whole society as a whole. It will affect all working people, from all sectors, public
and private, civil servants, as well as companies and bodies responsible for public
services, without distinction of employment status, sex, age or social status.
In addition, CGT stresses that the General Strike next March 8 will be based on 4
fundamental axes, labor, consumption, care and domestic work in order to highlight the
important role played by women in the maintenance of life.

The fascist parade in honor of the fascist General Lukov has been held for about 15 years
in Sofia. In recent years, an anarchist and anti-fascist initiative, headed by Antifa
Sofia, attempts to block the fascist presence on the streets of the city. ---- For the
third consecutive year, as Anarchist Political Organization - Federation of
Collectivities, we participated organized with our own block in the demonstration by
supporting anti-fascists in Bulgaria with the manifestation of practical internationalist
solidarity. We crossed the streets of Sofia with a central banner "Internationalist
solidarity will sweep the fascist threat to the Balkans - For the social revolution,
anarchy and libertarian communism" and protested against fascism by supporting the
comrades there who have been trying in recent years - under difficult conditions - to set
up mounds in the advance of neo-Nazi groups gathered there from all over Europe, while
attempting to create stable structures and fronts of resistance not to attack state
capital, fascists and mafia.
The anti-fascist course in Sofia surrounded and reinforced more than 400 anti-fascists and
anti-Fascists from Bulgaria and other Balkan countries, putting forward internationalist
solidarity, which is the only solution to scrutinize the fascist threat in the Balkans and
everywhere in the world.
The promotion of nationalism and racism, the exacerbation of transnational antagonisms,
the threatened warfare, the depth of impoverishment and the exploitation of the "bottom"
due to the antisocial policies of the sovereigns, the premium of fascist and neo-Nazi
groupings are all we have to fight on each side of the border.
Beyond the world of power, besides the dystopia of modern totalitarianism, which reserves
for the more poverty, misery, war and death, there is the world of struggle which
fervently fights fascism, the state and the capital with the horizon of building a a
society of equality, solidarity and freedom.
INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY WILL BETTER THE PHASE THREAT IN THE BALKANS.
FOR STRENGTHENING THE JOINT INTERNATIONAL GAMES. FOR THE BALKANS OF EQUALITY, SOLIDARITY
AND COMPLIANCE.
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSE, FREEDOM OF COMMUNICATION AND ANARCHY.
Anarchist Political Organization - Federation of Collectivities
Y.K. The apparently deliberate effort (from a site adjacent to the KKE) to completely
distort the characteristics of our - politically and organizationally - structured
presence in the anti-fascist / internationalist demonstration in Sofia, serves the purpose
of covering and legitimizing attacks on the anarchist struggle, a recent attempt to
violent isolation of the anarchist bloc in the strike demonstration in Patras on November
28, 2018.

On March 8, 2 actions will take place in Moscow, in which representatives and
representatives of anarchist-feminist, anarchist and leftist groups will take part. ----
The first of them - For women's rights and social justice! - will start in Sokolniki Hyde
Park at 11 o'clock , will be attended by the Left Socialist Action (Union of Democratic
Socialists), LeftFem, Narcprosvet, the Revolutionary Workers Party (Avant-garde), the
Russian Socialist Movement, the Left Resistance, anarchists and independent feminists.
---- "For us, the struggle for women's rights is inseparable from the struggle for social
justice and a classless society. We believe that only a society with public ownership of
the means of production, universal self-government, freedom of association for the
implementation of any public projects will create the conditions for the final eradication
of all types of discrimination.
Despite the fact that we set ourselves the ambitious goal of a fundamental change in the
structure of society, we are already demanding from the state legislative and practical
measures to achieve equal rights and opportunities for women and men, to prohibit
discrimination against women, and to protect women from any kind of violence, "the
initiator writes rally.
Meeting in Facebook.
Meeting in contact.
Channel in the telegraph.
The second action - Resources for women! - will also be held in Sokolniki and will begin
at 16.30. In it are going to participate MFI Rosa, LeftFem, Fembband, RFO SHE, as well as
independent feminists.
"Now in Russia, women are limited access to resources in all spheres. Most women are poor,
and even those who are in the middle class have no equal opportunities with men because of
sexism."
Physical, psychological and sexual abuse are constant companions of our lives.
But we - and you too! - let's not dwell only on the identification of problems, We will
propose solutions on how to seize access to resources, how to increase female power! "-
the organizers report.

Social and democratic issues have become central in the movement. The citizens' initiative
referendum is at the center of the debate. While clearly stating that there can be no
genuine democracy in a capitalist framework, we must join the debate on the Ric to advance
an idea: the imperative mandate. ---- For years, and still today, successive governments
have valued the use of the individual car and integrated it into the territorial
organization. As a result, distances have increased: habitat, workplaces, supply and
recreation have moved away from each other. The lengthening journeys make it necessary to
choose the fastest means. For anyone not living in a territory rich in public transport,
the use of the car is necessary. These are the same areas far from large urban centers
that are closing their public services one after the other (communication, justice,
health, transport, administration, finance, etc.). Car addiction continues to increase due
to political and not individual choices. And it is in this context of organized dependence
that the government has chosen to tax more motorists. Despite the efforts of some bosses
who came to support the movement hoping that it remains confined to the question of taxes,
the confrontation of individual issues and the difficulty of meeting daily needs despite
work have allowed the progressive re-emergence of a consciousness of class, inhabited by
an improbable heterogeneity of interests.
On the roundabouts, in the blockades, it did not take long for the destruction of certain
territories to be denounced and, from the second week, the demands were expanded,
defending in particular the increase of the wages and the defense of the public services.
A breathtaking representation
With yellow jackets, we build demands that are broadly articulated around social justice
while being cut off from most decision-making: we do not have access to institutional
powers and we are confronted with them. We are confronted with the rhetoric of breathless
representation, which offers the possibility of political expression only in the theater
of elections where the best choice, when we still believe in the relevance of this choice,
is to designate the least worst of the candidates. The feeling is that we also do not have
access to the usual counterpowers considered as ineffective or even complicit (media and
unions in particular).
Thus, when yellow jackets gather spontaneously and outside the framework of existing
political organizations, they completely open the field of slogans and claims, while
closing the door to traditional representations and symbols. In spite of everything, the
massive reinvestment of union structures and the strike form a perspective defended by a
growing part of the social movement. It remains to be found other ways of collectively
formulating claims, discussing them, making them known and putting them in place.
A simple claim
The citizens' initiative referendum (Ric) is a popular means by many and many yellow
vests. The Ric is a simple claim that seems to be able to fit into the current political
system, without necessarily having to rethink everything. If the conditions for its
implementation are adapted, it is supposed to allow a significant part of the society to
put its own subjects on the political agenda. Following which the entire population is
called upon to express themselves and, in the event of validation, the proposal initiated
and validated collectively must thus be able to take the force of law. Faced with
representative institutions hermetic to popular power, the Ric is a breath of fresh air.
The problem is that this proposal does not directly challenge the privileged status of
elected officials. Incorporating this possibility, a more detailed form of Ric has
emerged: the referendum of citizens' initiative with constitutive, repealing, revocatory
and legislative nature (Ric Carl). This is the referendum with a significant scope of
action, which, by proposing to amend the Constitution, to dismiss elected representatives
and to legislate, directly targets the foundations of the representative system. Once
applied, the Ric Carl would be a form of counter-power that would allow the exercise of
democracy outside elections. But in the meantime, even though he claims to have the
potential to diminish their power, he does not question the existence of the elected
representatives and the institutions that carry them. There remains an individual
response, and the collective dimension necessary for democratic construction is not
developed. It is therefore likely that elected officials would do everything to reduce the
scope of these citizen initiatives, preserve their privileges, and that organized groups
of influence would seize them to bring their own demands.
Collectively formulate claims
Even within the yellow vests, questions arise about the Ric and its dimension of "
individual vote ". The importance of collective frameworks is beginning to emerge in some
general assemblies, and the limits of the Ric are questioned. This is where we come to
articulate it to another resource: the imperative mandate. It is a simple tool: any
assembly wishing to interact with another organization prepares a mandate and sends a
person to carry it out. Mandate conditions can be very variable but remain, and this is
important, the prerogative of all concerned. Revocability and collective definition of
mandates respond to the democratic aspirations of a growing part of society. This is why,
in addition to being an essential constituent of the self-management practices of
Alternative Libertaire,
AL Fougeres
The meeting of Commercy
On January 26th and 27th, the first assembly meeting was held in Commercy. At a time when
more and more people are claiming to represent yellow vests for electoral purposes, this
initiative has been a great success (more than 90 groups present, and 75 mandated groups).
A word of the movement was necessary, and even more so a democratic word, so that the
fight is not confiscated.
Read also: " Commercy was motivating, structuring, bringing perspectives "
Place of convergence, Commercy has helped to emerge a clear call and claims both general
and specific, worn by yellow vests gathered around several themes (women, teachers,
housing ...). The need for a strike was consensual, although convergence with the unions
remained a matter of debate: the need not to be confiscated was again the main concern.
Real time sharing, Commercy came to give new perspectives to some local groups.
Encouraging initiative, it will be followed by a new assembly meeting in Saint-Nazaire in
April.

March 8 was established in 1910 to honor the women's fights. The solemn establishment of
such a day attempts to unbundle every militant claim, any historical stock and collective
memory that can inspire and promote the struggle for female emancipation. A struggle that
sovereignty is constantly trying to put forward as a "demand for equality in the
administration of power". The attempt to incorporate the various movements and alter their
characteristics is a common practice of sovereignty to assimilate every effort of
resistance and reduce its radicalism. For us, March 8 is a day of resistance and struggle,
not a "feast" for the woman, which in fact is all about confirming and reproducing the
imposed gender roles.
Against patriarchy and every form of oppression imposed by the system, we respond to
intensified self-organized and counter-institutional action. We keep the flame of the
struggles of the past alive and we continue collectively and from the bottom to the
liberation struggles of the future. We learn and draw inspiration from women's struggles
all over the world, from the mountains of south-eastern Mexico and Zapatista women who
send this year a message to the women of the world announcing the assault they accept
globally as a revolutionary movement from the state and the capital, our comrades on the
other side of the Aegean that resist the fascist-patriarchal state of Turkey,
We continue the struggle for women's emancipation, the struggle for the freedom of all.
Recognizing that freedom is neither granted nor granted, but is conquered through the
struggles of the exploited and the oppressed, we choose to organize and collectivize - as
women and as anarchists - and to fight together, with the workers, the unemployed, the
students, the students, the people of the WORLD, to join our voices and our action against
our daily dynasties all over the world, keeping alive the vision for a society of
equality, dignity, freedom and solidarity.
In 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was one of the largest womenswear manufacturers
in New York City, and its owners who had set up the company in 1900 were haunted by the
brutal exploitation of their workers.
On Saturday afternoon, March 25, 1911, a fire broke out on the eighth floor of the
factory. Almost everything in the room was flammable, like textiles, papers and wooden
tables. The fire took uncontrollable dimensions and any attempt to extinguish it was
futile as the fire hoses did not run out of water.
Many employees based on company policy were locked in their workplaces to avoid being
unnecessarily removed and trapped behind the closed doors.
