Over a hundred girls underwent female genital mutilation. Demand that the licenses of the physicians who performed these heinous procedures be revoked. Sign Now Dear friends, During a period of 12 years, over a hundred girls between the ages of 6 and 9 were mutilated in Michigan by physicians who performed female genital mutilation (FGM). Shockingly, it turns out this was legal,meaning all the doctors involved can carry on practising medicine, whilst the affected girls continue to suffer lifelong physical and psychological damage. FGM is a procedure just like it sounds — genital mutilation. Little girls' clitorises are surgically removed in an attempt to suppress a girl's sexuality.From a scientific standpoint, it does not achieve the stated goal, and from a moral standpoint, it is a heinous one. Now, a judge has just ruled that it is unconstitutional to ban female genital mutilation. This is really a massive setback to the rights of women in the U.S. with women's rights group Equality Now saying: "It's a giant step backward in the protection of women’s and girls' rights... Especially when there is a global movement to eliminate this practice." The U.S. was once looked to as a leader in terms of decrying FGM. Now, they don't have a leg to stand on. However, while this important issue continues to move through the court system, we can send a clear message to other institutions to stand against it. That's why this petition is asking the two medical licensing boards: American Board of Physician Specialities and American Board of Internal Medicine with which these doctors are licensed to revoke their licenses immediately. What they did may not have been illegal, but it was clearly unethical and broke their Hippocratic Oath not to cause harm.
