Demand an end to the tampon tax

Basic feminine hygiene products are a necessity, not a luxury. Sign this petition to demand an end abolishment to the tax on feminine products. Sign Now Dear friends, Feminine products are considered unnecessary by the U.S. Government. In fact, 42 of the 50 states apply a so-called 'luxury tax' on pads and tampons. Many people can't afford basic feminine hygiene products. This is an utter disgrace. According to a report in Vice Impact: "Some become so desperate that they will take bus rides for hours to shelters they heard "might be carrying them that day" or will use dirty paper bags they find on the sidewalk in the place of sanitary pads." Feminine products are so expensive, that when deciding whether to buy food, or menstrual products, the majority choose food. Without access to period products, they are at a greater risk of getting infections like HPV. This is not only a health issue but a human rights issue too. The tampon tax is a big moneymaker for U.S. states. According to Cristina Garcia, who serves in the California State Assembly, California collects $20 million a year from feminine products. However, there is some hope, as states like Illinois, New York and Connecticut have already moved to abolish taxes on feminine products. This is why signing this petition can put further pressure on the state of California to do the same, so even more states can follow suit.
