Exotic animals like Betty don't belong in a circus. It is impossible to train an elephant to do tricks or give rides without hurting them so badly that their body, mind, and spirit are broken forever. The rigorous schedule, constant travel, and tiny enclosures make their already painful lives even less tolerable. But on top of the usual horror that circus animals experience on a daily basis, Betty is owned by a truly abusive man. Larry Carden was cited for violating Atlanta's cruelty-to-animals law when he used a bullhook on a frightened elephant five years ago.In that instance, he was seen forcefully inserting a bullhook into the elephant's mouth and dragging her from the stage. And now this monster owns Betty.
