On Monday, the world will celebrate Earth Day. But fighting for a healthy environment in South Africa's coal mining communities can be perilous.
At least three activists have been killed in the last three years. Many have been attacked or threatened for raising concerns about the effects that mining, especially coal mining, has on the environment and health of their communities.
We talked with Robby Mokgalaka, Coal Campaign manager at groundWork, a South African environmental justice organization, about the impact of mining on rural communities and the dangers of being an activist in South Africa.
Brutal punishments in Brunei now include whipping or death by stoning for extramarital sex and anal sex, and amputation of limbs for theft. Abortion is also criminalized, and lesbian sex is punished by 40 lashes.
