The DPRTE arms fair pulls together the UK military, weapon manufacturers, and arms dealers
and exporters. Not only does it support our own military industrial complex, but it
involves companies like BAE systems who supply some of the worlds most repressive regimes,
such as Saudi Arabia and Turkey. ---- On March 28th, we'll be joining with a host of other
people, from members of faith groups to trade unionists, to confront those who profit from
death and abuse. If you want to take a stand, scroll down for the practical info, if you'd
like to know more first, read on for our DPRTE FAQ! ---- What is DPRTE? ---- DPRTE, stands
for Defence Procurement, Research, Technology & Exportability. I know, catchy right? It
brings together multinational arms companies, smaller companies involved in research or
production, and organisations that want to buy or help export weapons. It first took place
in 2012, and has happened almost every year since. The organisers often like to claim ‘it
isn't technically an arms fair!' as contracts aren't signed at the event itself. No one
really buys that though, even the police just call it an arms fair!
Every bomb that is dropped, every bullet that is fired, has to be made somewhere. Wherever
that is, it can be resisted.
Why oppose it?
The UK arms trade exists for two reasons. To make a bunch of already rich people richer,
and to allow our government to act tough in front of their international rivals. The cost
of this is immense. Perpetual war, something any rational person would want to avoid, is
quietly pushed for in order to drive up stock prices. The fires of conflict are kept
burning with the supply of British made weapons, regardless of the human cost. Brutal
regimes are kept in power by British missiles and aircraft. Business as usual for the arms
trade can be disrupted, if its profiteers are exposed and it's political supporters
challenged.
What about the economic benefits?
Whenever the UK's role in the international arms trade is brought up, there is talk about
the ‘job creation'. For most of us the human cost of these jobs is simply too high, even
those whose lively hood depend on them have in the past fought against the arming of
authoritarian regimes! Even if you only cared about income, once you factor in tax payer
funded subsidies, the government research handed over, and the free assistance and
promotion given by the civil service we pay more than £18,000 a year for every single one
of those jobs. Any sector would be successful with that backing, and the support could be
given to anything from education to environmental protection.
A History of Resistance to DPRTE - In Which They Run Away A Lot
In 2013 students at the University of the West of England (UWE) discovered an ‘exhibition'
being hosted on their Frenchay campus was in fact an arms fair. Anarchist Federation
members studying at UWE were amongst those who disrupted the set up, marched through
campus, blockaded the gates, and got inside the event itself. The day was a shambles, with
most of the arms dealers stuck in traffic. At this point DPRTE ran away to Cardiff.
A further four DPRTE events took place at Cardiff's Motorpoint arena. From the start they
encountered resistance, organised by Stop the Cardiff Arms Fair, South Wales Anarchists,
The Anarchist Action Network, Campaign Against the Arms Trade and more! Cardiff's DPRTE
events saw an occupied roof, red paint on their expensive suits, marches, communications
blockades and increasing numbers of protesters surrounding the venue for the entire day.
The police attempted to intimidate and arrest protesters at random, but this just led to
dropped charges, payouts for wrongful arrest, and an even more determined resistance. By
2018 the protest had grown much larger, aided by groups such as the Kurdish Solidarity
Network, and members of AFed from as far away as Cornwall. The arms fair was even being
condemned in the Welsh Assembly. At this point DPRTE ran away to Birmingham.
Putting some distance extra between DPRTE and the committed anti-arms activists of South
Wales and Bristol probably seemed like a good idea to the organisers. However a coalition
of people in Birmingham soon made it clear that there would be just as much trouble for
the event near their city. By the start of 2019 pressure was mounting on the venue and
local government, and packed out meetings representing unions, faith groups, anarchists
and others were putting plans in place for a number of demonstrations. At this point DPRTE
ran away to Farnborough.
Changing venue with little time to spare couldn't have been an easy (or cheap) decision
for the DPRTE organisers. In Farnborough perhaps they think they have made themselves ‘un
protestable', with a secure venue owned by the industry itself, nestled in between an air
field and the premises of arms companies. The creative, resourceful and committed movement
against them begs to differ. Do they have anywhere left to run?
What you need to know!
The loose coalition of groups that has formed to confront DPRTE, is planning a static
protest near the entrances of the event. There will be a diverse mix of folks present, and
at these events it is common for small groups to launch their own actions throughout
proceedings. Keep an eye out if you want to support these, or of course plan your own.
The Arms Fair takes places for one day, Thursday the 28th of March. Most of the set up is
completed the night before, so delegates begin to arrive before 9am. This makes early
morning the key time for any protest that wants to make its presence known, and we'll be
kicking things off from 8.30am.
The venue itself - Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre - has multiple
entrances, and prior experience tells us that if there is a protest at one, organisers may
attempt to hide this from attendees by instructing them to enter by a different entrance.
As such the location of the main bulk of the protest may vary, so make sure to check
back here just before the day, or keep in touch with Campaign Against the Arms Trade or
Birmingham Stop the Arms Fair. For now, aim to get to Queens Roundabout, Farnborough GU14 6AZ.
There are groups travelling to Farnborough from Bristol and Birmingham. If you would like
to join them contact Bristol Anarchist Federation or Birmingham Stop the Arms Fair. There
are several train stations near the venue, (Farnborough Main, Farnborough North,
Aldershot) with regular services from London Waterloo, Guilford and Reading. If you are
coming by car, you'll need the A325 which is off the M3 and A31. More travel details can
be found on the venues website, or by studying your online map of choice!
Unfortunately we can't control what the police do. Whilst it is completely legal to take
part in a static protest, the police will possibly see fit to give you trouble anyway.
This is a risk at any and all public protest, and we highly recommend you read up on your
legal rights, make sure you stick with a group of fellow protesters, and keep a look out
for each other.
We'll finish off by letting you know what you should bring. Beyond the basics for any day
outside (an extra layer of clothing, water, snacks), we want to be seen and heard. So
bring placards, banners, megaphones, loud voices, or quiet plans!
When: Thursday 28th March 8.30am onwards
Where: Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre farnboroughinternational.org

As we all know, the first campaign against the anarchists called Phoenix was a real
embarrassment for the authorities. However, they decided to follow up on their
unsuccessful operation by accusing five other people, this time from attacks by the
so-called Revolutionary Cell Network, which, through its website, subscribed to several
police cars. On Monday, April 8 and Wednesday, April 10, the District Court in Most held
negotiations with five defendants. ---- Together with a group of about ten, we decided to
support our accused friends. On Monday early in the morning, we opened our eyes and opened
our socks and got in the car to arrive on time. ---- We're coming to court. The court
guard at the entrance confiscates the comrade's sewing needle, and then we just go to the
second floor, pat friends on the shoulder and wish them all to go well. Negotiations begin
slowly. The prosecutor shakes hands with advocates. It's all kind of a theater. A game
that can ruin one's life.
Too much is said to be too small for a small courtroom. Even though some seats are still
loose, only six people will go in. For the first two hours, we are listening to a
prosecutor who lists dozens of charges and recites the communiqués of the so-called
Network of Revolutionary Cells with remarkable recitation. Firstly... Second... Twelfth...
On Friday, May 15, the defendants carried out an arson attack on a Czech police vehicle...
dolls are coming out of the bullshit after a few minutes, sometimes we will entertain a
bad English account with the prosecutor.
Then there is a break for coffee and a cigar, followed by a questioning of one of the
accused, Lukáš B. He speaks well and for a long time and gradually turns the state
apparatus all assumptions. No, the scent marks on a piece of cloth are not really direct
proof. No, the matched IPs using Tor do not really mean anything and no, the actions to
support the staff of the Cutlery, where their boss did not pay their wages, are not really
blackmail.
After another pause, the court continues to question the other accused who refuse to
testify. Petr S. will comment on the evidence, and just as Luke will flood the prosecutor,
who is already desperate now, with irreversible arguments.
Then we finally break up and wait for the center.
On the second day of the trial, Vašek M. is given a statement of interviews and after a
pause extended to wait for the prosecutor, the court adjourns to the beginning of July
when witnesses will continue to be questioned.
Other courts with accused in the continuation of the Phoenix case will be held on July 1
and 3 again in Most. Any support will be welcome.

Last month, bisexual gamer and leftist YouTuber Hbomberguy finished a gruelling 57-hour
streaming session of the notoriously frustrating videogame Donkey Kong 64, raising over
$340,000 for UK trans charity Mermaids. The mammoth effort was in response to anti-trans
activist Graham Lineham and his briefly successful social media campaign to jeopardise
Mermaids' funding from the UK government. ---- With support at first in the gay and trans
communities, the stream eventually went viral over left-wing social media and spread into
the wider geek and videogame subcultures, with nerd celebrities like the designer of the
Doom and Quake games John Romero, Donkey Kong 64 composer Grant Kirkhope and absurdist
queer sci-fi erotica writer Chuck Tingle appearing publicly throughout the stream
alongside a variety of left and left-leaning figures such as whistleblower and outspoken
socialist Chelsea Manning, internet philosopher ContraPoints and even US democratic
congress member Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.
The stream served as a powerful counterpoint to the culture of toxicity and right-wing
politics that often dominate the gaming world, showing passionate support for an oppressed
community while connecting up our struggle with the wider left. It also shined a light on
the existence of the leftist nerd: a common type of nerd (especially in trans communities)
whose presence is continually overshadowed by the louder voices of reactionary gamers and
pseudo-rationalist centrists claiming to be apolitical, even as they enthusiastically
support the status quo. When even basic nods towards progressive politics in games are
often controversial - such as when the 2016 Baldur's Gate expansion Siege of Dragonspear
included a transgender character and the developers were review-bombed and harassed for it
- reactionary politics are often employed as a marketing mechanic, pandering to the
delusion that the ‘social justice warriors' are out to get gamers.
This phenomenon is not unique to gaming but it does appear to be more common among fans
than in other mediums. The idea of gamers as an embattled minority, beset by what they
perceive as the lying, hating left on one side, and the censorship of the religious right
on the other, has actually become a meme in certain circles. Never mind the aforementioned
right-wing biases in gaming or the sometimes fascinating history of Christian games.
Gatekeeping in reaction to a previously maligned hobby becoming popular and hence
accessible to everyone - even those who lack the skill of more adept gamers - plays a part
in this as well. There is for instance a trend to lament the rise in context- and
content-driven (as opposed to purely gameplay-driven) reviews, especially when
journalists are seen to ‘suck' at games.
Hbomberguy's stream gave the lie to all of these assumptions. Firstly, by absolutely
dominating at the game and, secondly, by showing just how many leftists genuinely love the
medium.
It isn't just that almost everybody finds gaming enjoyable. It's also that many games are
built on highly detailed alternative worlds. I have discussed before how this can help to
educate players by making them compare the game's world with the one in which they live.
What must also be observed is that this process is intrinsic to gaming, and that the wider
left can take advantage of it.
As a democratic, modern entertainment medium, games are openly created so that players can
have fun. Simple games like Candy Crush will usually do nothing else. But with more
elaborate games like, say, Yakuza 0, the gameplay and the narrative necessitate drawing
connections to the outside world. These connections create a dialogue between the game and
player, asking questions that the player is obliged to answer. By drawing their attention
to them, leftists can help gamers see the nature of the world we really live in and help
them feel empowered to change it.
This is an example of what Paulo Freire calls dialogic education. As he writes in Pedagogy
of the Oppressed (1968):
Because dialogue is an encounter among women and men who name the world, it must not be a
situation where some name on behalf of others. It is an act of creation; it must not serve
as a crafty instrument for the domination of one person by another. The domination
implicit in dialogue is that of the world by the dialoguers; it is conquest of the world
for the liberation of humankind.
Yakuza 0 is an anime-inspired action game about a pair of Japanese criminals who get drawn
into a complicated war between the Yakuza and a real estate company over an absurdly
valuable plot of empty land. The game is often sexist and the role the martial arts play
in it is very silly, but the action builds upon a simulation of a pre-financial bust Japan
that offers a robust commentary on capitalist greed and the way that gentrification
destroys communities. It even has a side-quest featuring a conversation about tax law with
a city politician that starts with you having to fight off a group of businessmen
exclaiming that taxation is theft, and then answer questions from the politician on the
purpose of taxation and how a tax becomes both workable and fair. The tax that the player
ends up creating is real - it was introduced by former Japanese Prime Minister Noboru
Takeshita around the time when the game is set.
This sort of teaching is a core feature of the medium. You can see it in Battletech, a
robot-themed strategy game that includes an innovative trans-inclusive character creator
showing players just how diverse human gender really is. You can see it in Spinnortality,
a game about ‘soft power', and in Wolfenstein 2's Nazi-smashing dieselpunk alt-history,
which uses satire to show how present-day America has come to be ruled over by avowed
white supremacists. You can even see it in games that try to be ‘just' simulations
seemingly devoid of politics; socialist YouTuber donoteat01's videos on Cities Skylines
show how the innovative use of building mods combined with a players own experience can
reveal the ways in which building cities are political acts.
Games like Civilization VI, which present social and historical phenomena in more
simplistic fashion, or those that make an effort to avoid the real-world politics of the
places and scenarios that they're discussing - such as Farcry 5 - tend to suffer for these
omissions.
While the barriers for entry can be high, gaming has become a mainstream art form, and
it's easier to get into than it's ever been before. There are a lot of options, too, with
everything from modern versions of traditional platformers to full-blown space operas that
can serve equally well as introductions to the medium.
The power of videogames to influence our society towards progressive (or reactionary) ends
through dialogic education, team building, and simulations of the world makes familiarity
not just with gaming culture but with the games themselves a vital tool to shape and
understand reality. Through criticism, narration, or simple engagement with the games and
their communities, leftists can raise both awareness and money for the causes we are
passionate about, and fight against the wider political drift towards the right that we
are experiencing throughout the world.

Self-hosting, which not so long ago was still reserved for a certain techno-intellectual
elite (the "nerds" or "geeks"), is now within reach of the general public. In this first
article, we present the recent progress of democratization of self-hosting. ---- What is
self-hosting? Wikipedia tells us this: "Self-hosting is a practice of hosting personal
Internet services on your own machines at home. He opposes the use of hosting services at
a provider. Often practiced by companies, self-hosting also interests individuals for
various reasons. In particular, it allows you to have control and responsibility for your
own data." As for the Internet, we could define as: network of networks, global,
accessible to all and to all, created to be decentralized, allowing us to communicate
worldwide.
Decentralize the Internet
The decentralization of the Internet is important because it has allowed and still allows
the network to be resilient in the event of equipment failure. But other ideas were also
introduced during its creation: non-discrimination (neutrality of the network),
participative development, universality (wants to be accessible to the greatest number).
Over time, the network has grown and become essential in the daily lives of Internet users
and businesses. Its success did not escape long the market capitalization. Its
commercialization has led to its centralization around the giants of the Web. This
centralization around commercial actors has brought its share of criticisms and scandals:
non-respect of privacy, political influences, infringement of freedom of expression, theft
of personal data, abusive working conditions, etc. The list is long!
Internet (and associated technologies) was created to be decentralized; it is our habits
of digital consumption that must evolve to counter the excesses. It's up to us, Internet
users, to go from simple consumption to active participation. It is in this perspective
that the concept of self-hosting comes into play. Hosting our services (email, social
network, video sharing, blog, etc.) by ourselves instead of giving the responsibility to
the giants of the web, we recover the control of our data, we avoid drifts and we prevent
the capitalists from using it for their own interests.
Self-hosting was feasible, in theory, from the beginnings of the Internet, but the
hardware was expensive and the technical knowledge needed to deploy it was not within
everyone's reach. In the mid-1980s, personal computers (PCs) experienced a simplification
of their interfaces so that they can be used by the general public, mainly with the advent
of graphical interfaces. On the other hand, server computers (intended to host services
and "serve" them to other computers, "clients") remained for a long time the preserve of
the initiates.
Recent progress in self-hosting
In 2012, the company Raspberry Pi changes the game and popularizes minicomputers with its
model "Raspberry Pi 1Intended to encourage learning of computer programming. This
computer, compatible with Linux and Windows, has many advantages: it does not cost more
than 30 dollars, measures a few centimeters, consumes little, does not make noise and can
connect anything and everything. The concept attracts a large community that will then
establish the reputation of Raspberry Pi and contribute to its documentation. Galvanized
by this success, several other manufacturers are quickly investing in this market (Banana
pi, O-droid, OlinuXino, to name a few). Their greatest asset is the standardization of
hardware that allows developers to create a set of programs ready to use (operating
system) and can be duplicated and used by everyone without adaptation necessary: you do
not have to be an expert anymore to have a server at home. In less than an hour, following
the documentation on the manufacturer's website, a server is operational!
The most successful project in terms of ease of use is probably Yunohost, literally "why
not host yourself?(Yunohost.org) with which it is now possible to install a service simply
by clicking a button. Despite these recent advances, there was still a link for
self-hosting: the connection to the Internet. Indeed, connecting a box on the network and
making it visible from all over the world requires some knowledge. In addition, this work
is made difficult by the majority of Internet service providers (who do not have a direct
capital interest in helping us in this process). Thus, according to the provider, our
self-hosted email may be blocked, our website may be labeled "unsafeSome Internet box
configurations may not be tolerated.
In 2015, the project "The brick Internet" (Labriqueinter.net) is born and proposes a
solution that responds to previous criticisms. "Brick" is one of those minicomputers
(barely bigger than a computer mouse) that functions as a server to host our own tools; on
this one, everything is pre-installed and partly preconfigured, from the operating system
to the software, precisely to be accessible to the novices, and even the connection to the
Internet is facilitated. These solutions are part of an ethical digital approach,
respecting privacy, using free software.
But, there is a but
Thus, we are today able to be individually actor or actress of the network. But if
self-hosting is now technically available to all, why not generalize? What is this
important obstacle that we have not yet managed to overcome? This will be the subject of
next month's Digital section: self-hosting versus digital self-defense, which will
naturally lead us to talk about "individual versus collective" and "kittens" (yes if) !

Yesterday, 02/05, we learned that an anarchist companion was stabbed in Paris, inside the
Public bookstore. Fortunately, he survived this aggression whose authors we still do not
know. ---- This knife attack against an anarchist occurred in a bookstore: an anarchist
symbol! ---- This bookstore welcomed us last September to talk about the Rouvikonas and
discuss our struggles, from Athens to Paris, and allowed us to acquire a little more
knowledge. ---- All our desires for recovery for this wounded companion, strength for his
family, and our sympathy for his companions who were probably very shocked. ---- All our
solidarity with our companions of the Anarchist Federation of France, as well as with the
other francophone libertarians. ---- Before our enemies, let us not be intimidated: let us
approach and continue to resist together across borders. ---- No one step behind. Anarchy
will win!

On Mayday police attacked the a demonstration of some 1000 Anarchists in Bandung with
brutal severity on the pretence of stopping some spray painting. this demonstration
involved children and families who were sent fleeing. The gathering broke into two sections
who were then chased down, attacked, arrested (some sixty people simply being bundled into
black SUV's by masked police) and beaten. Shortly after without any judicial procedure
many had their heads shaved, their faces covered in spray paint and some were forced to
crawl along the street in their underwear. You can see footage of the demo before the
attack of Anarchists singing ‘Buruh Tani' (‘Farm Workers') and after the police assault to
see how the cops change everything. ---- In total some 619 were arrested and currently 3
comrades are still trapped in the hellish Indonesian prison system.
Elsewhere in Jakarta, Anarchists took on a police blockade to allow Trade Unions comrades
to get to their rally point in a beautiful act of solidarity against the state, however
the local Anarcho-Syndicalist union in Jakarta is being targetted by the police.
In Malang, Makassar and Surabaya comrades have been beaten and kidnapped by the state with
entire communities being terrorist by the bastards as they preform sweeps looking for
Anarchists
The shaving of heads brings back vivid memories religious police units of the Aceh region
- who have history of horrifically abusing transwomen - attacking punk charity gigs in
2010/11 beating people up and taking them away for "re-educated" starting with... well as
police chief inspector, Iskandar Hasan said "First their hair will be cut. Then they will
be tossed into a pool. That'll teach them a lesson!" ... it's seems shaving heads is a
national past time for the pigs in Indonesia now...
All of this has been building for decades with a vibrant culture of resistance. Please
take the time to have a read of this interview Black Rose / Rosa Negra had with an Uber
driver and member of Persaudaraan Pekerja Anarko Sindikalis (PPAS) last year which talks
about how how Anarchist-Syndicalism has developed there and also this 2010 interview with
Indonesian Anarchist from the book "Von Jakarta bis Johannesburg - Anarchismus weltweit'
and finally this essay by Vadim Damier and Kirill Limanov which looks into the history of
the struggle back to the two hundred years where anti-colonial forces alongside comrades
in Europe and India which eventually lead to Anarchist cells forming in 1914/6 and with
the ebb and flow of revolution pettering out only for the black flag to return alongside
punk in the 90's.
" In the years 1993-1994, an Indonesian punk scene emerged. Gradually, part of it turned
to anti-dictatorship and anti-fascist activity; they established links with social
movements and with the labour movement. As the Indonesian activists themselves described,
the anarchist movement arose around 1998.
In more recently memory the Anarchist scene in Indonesia has suffered major hits. The
Anarchist Black Cross Indonesia (Palang Hitam) had to stop operating a couple of years
back after a member pretty much stolen all the funds and donations from around the world
and disappeared leaving a divided community spread across thirteen thousand islands.
Disconnected from each other and from the international community Indonesian comrades have
struggled on and built vibrate Anarchist movement diverse in nature and entirely composed
of local autonomous groups and individuals. These are small communities both rural and
urban that have been facing a massive crack down for years with the state actively
monitoring organisers and disappearing people.
So right now... whats occouring?
Around the world comrades are lighting the fires and sharing their solidarity, some folk
are as I type en-route to Indonesia to provide support, develop links and report from the
front line as they take action with local comrades. In the UK? Take action. Show solidarity.
Whatever that means to you

assistance please send it to the paypal below. We will use it for legal fees and to help

The state and market clusters, which aim to accumulate wealth in the hands of the most
powerful at all costs, attempt to establish an emergency regime by imposing a barbaric
regularity: the overthrow of vested rights, first-time auctions, privatizations,
exclusions and marginalization, pillaging of nature are some examples of today's reality.
In this reality, when the state is called upon to confront people who question the
necessity of its existence and its monopoly in violence, it chooses on the one hand the
harsh repression and on the other the "retaliation" of the fighters. The repressive
struggles and extortionary penalties of the fighters serve, on the one hand, the
interruption of their political action, their physical and moral extermination, and, on
the other hand, the exemplification of the others. At the same time in the guards, whoever
resists, does not rumble or subdue, keeping an attitude in keeping with his / her ideas
and values, then a new legal framework, a special exemption regime, which aims to make
them / them kneel down, depriving the rights acquired after races inside and out of prison.
In this treaty, Dimitris Koufontas is once again confronted with the vengeance of the
state and his attempt to isolate him, as the veto of the prosecutor in the prison council
does not receive the short-term leave from the prison he is entitled to. So he chose to
put forward the only "medium" he had to respond to the approaches against him, his own
body. Dimitris Koufodinas has begun a hunger strike since May 2, demanding permission from
the prison he is being held.
Against political opponents, the counter-terrorist and judicial mechanisms of reprisal are
relentless and operate on the basis of vengefulness, discipline and exemplification. The
"rule of law" is a treaty that serves the interests of sovereigns, and when their
"justice" is not enough, there are "exception regimes" such as those created by
terrorists. Full control, the intensity of repression, more and more military treatment of
the political opponents of the regime, the isolation, vengeance, the targeting of those
who struggle are some approaches that came to legitimize the "anti" terrorist law that
hears in the name 187A.
Inside the "black holes" created by the judicial circles, they try to throw out those who
consider themselves dangerous and insubordinate of the regime and those who do not submit.
They either kill them legally, impose long sentences, or build warehouses for people such
as modern concentration camps for immigrants, Korydallos underground cells, and high
security prisons for political opponents. In this context, the Prosecutor's veto has also
been institutionalized in order to achieve their isolation. Power tried, tried, and would
always try to isolate and exterminate those who struggle and impose a regime of terror.
The "anti" terrorist law reserves a "special" approach to the political opponents of the
regime, these and those that seek to overthrow the state and capitalism in order to be
dealt with more and more destructive methods with the ultimate goal of "decommissioning"
their. For political opponents, therefore, a permanent opt-out regime was enacted, so that
repressive and judicial services could activate any appropriate means to eradicate them
morally, politically and physically.
Power, therefore, imposes an exception regime on a particular social component and
demonstrates it as the "internal enemy," which must be hit and suppressed. The state, in
other words, creates a black hole in the institutional and legal field in which the laws
and rights that the constitution and civil justice itself do not apply, which apply to the
whole of society, but cover and "Free" to the repressive and judicial mechanisms to use
any means they deem appropriate and effective to control and suppress the "internal
enemy". With this method,This is the complete control and commitment, in absolute terms,
of the entire society to the imperatives of the state and of capital, a condition that
leads to a model of an Orwellian type society.
So, through every repressive attack, not only is the elimination of political opponents,
but also their isolation and the withdrawal from their social environment of politicians
and staff, which is a basic prerequisite. Against all of this we stand by the side of the
struggling, the opposing, the insurgent, recognizing our common position, which is on the
same side of the barrier against the state and capital. For us, the "guilty" or "innocent"
dipole does not define our attitude towards those who are in the target of repression. If
the state tries to shield, impose and define every aspect of our everyday life in order to
perpetuate its privileges and protect the interests of capital,we must oppose solidarity
from the bottom, organize and overthrow every repressive approach and the state of
emergency that it is trying to enforce and fight for the total overthrow of the world of
exploitation and oppression, even the abolition of the last prison.
Against terrorists, extraordinary tribunals and the exception regime that is being attempted.
Race inside and outside the cells, for a world of equality-solidarity-justice-freedom.

"The ACF remains a comparatively small organisation. Its desire to create or be the
component of a large revolutionary organisation and movement has failed to happen. Many
are put off joining a group where a strong commitment and a lot of determination are
required. Many libertarian revolutionaries are as yet unconvinced of the need to create a
specific libertarian communist organisation. They remain tied to the ideas of local
groups, or at best regional federations loosely linked, being adequate for the very
difficult tasks of introducing libertarian revolutionary ideas and practices to the mass
of the population. They remain unconvinced of the need for a unified strategy and
practice, for ideological and tactical unity and collective action as we in the ACF have
insisted upon consistently. Some remain mesmerised by the myths of nationalism and
national liberation, some by illusions in the unions. ... As we noted in Virus 9, in late
1986-early 1987: ‘There has been little sharing of experiences among libertarians in
various campaigns and struggles. Even on something as basic as a demonstration,
libertarians have marched separately and in different parts of the demonstration.' This
still remains true today. Libertarians remain within their separate local groups and
organisations. There is little dialogue and little attempt for united activity, for forums
and debates where these are possible. And yet not since the pre-World War 1 period and the
late 60s has there been such a potential for the growth of the libertarian revolutionary
movement. The collapse of Stalinism, the changes within social-democracy-including the
British variety of Labourism- with the end of welfarism, and the effects of both of these
on Trotskyism, have created a space which revolutionary anarchists must fill."
This was written in spring 1996 for Organise! The magazine of the Anarchist Communist
Federation, in which several of those of us who founded the Anarchist Communist Group were
active. Its observations remain largely true and valid, apart from the temporary reviving
of the Labour Party with the phenomenon of Corbynism. The fact that this statement is
still relevant 23 years later is both tragic and disturbing.
Indeed since this statement both the Solidarity Federation and the Anarchist Federation
have gone into decline with few of their groups still functioning and active. The events
which followed the last London Anarchist Bookfair in 2017 have aggravated these
circumstances and there appears to be little appetite for cooperation between anarchist
organisations, and between those organisations and unaffiliated local groups - with a few
exceptions like the Revolutionary Anarchist Group in Birmingham.
We later noted in Organise! In summer 2014 that:
"An indication of the malaise within this scene- a scene rather than a movement as the
last term implies some shared identity, which seems lacking- is the disappearance of hard
copy publications like the newspaper Freedom and the magazine Black Flag[update: there is
a plan for an issue in time for the London Bookfair 2014]. These both disappeared
essentially because they lacked a base able to write for them and to distribute and sell
them. Other magazines like the magazine of the Solidarity Federation, Direct Action, and
Here and Now, based in Glasgow and Leeds, have also disappeared. They were unconnected to
a movement, a network of groups and individuals, or a national organisation or
organisations. Even the problem of a lack of a visible and united presence on
demonstrations and actions is one that still plagues British anarchism."
This again remains largely true, with Freedom sporadically appearing now and again in hard
copy and with an online presence.
The article went on to say: "What passes for British anarchism seems at the moment unable
to develop as a result of the space created by the decline of the traditional left and
seems to be in crisis itself. Various conferences which somehow sought to unite the
different anarchist groups and develop a revolutionary practice- Mayday 1998, the
Anarchist Movement Conference of 2009, the ALARM Conference of 2012- all proved to be damp
squibs and failed as organisers. Some local attempts to organise- the Whitechapel
Anarchist Group, the ALARM London-wide network, also collapsed. Meanwhile the Haringey
Solidarity Group, which has done sterling local work over many decades has, we must speak
truthfully, failed to develop its idea of a network of local London community groups,
influenced by libertarian ideas. Apart from the HSG, few local neighbourhood/borough
groups have developed and the network, Radical London has disappeared."
In fact since then we have seen the development of Corbynism and the complete loss of
critical faculties among many self-defined anarchists with their entry into the Labour
Party or at the least enthusiastic support for Corbynism. Alongside this has been the
capitulation to nationalism, whether it be Scottish nationalism, or the uncritical
cheerleading for the Kurdish nationalists of the PKK. There has been a significant shift
away from class struggle politics.
There has been some useful local work in neighbourhoods and several interesting attempts
to set up Solidarity Networks. There has been some work around workplace issues and
strikes, and some valuable work around housing, evictions, Workfare, and the Bedroom Tax.
There has been the setting up of the Green Anticapitalist Front in response to the climate
change school strikes and the emergence of Extinction Rebellion. This latter venture
appears to be growing to include activists beyond the original initiating work of the
Anarchist Federation, but these are early days and already the involvement of Leninist
groups may lead to difficulties.
This work is not enough, it needs to be multiplied. We need to develop a serious class
struggle anarchist practice and theory. We need to move away from amateurism and lack of
seriousness. We have to develop a willingness and practice of coordinated activity
wherever we can. We have to reject populism, electoralism, nationalism and
anti-organisationalism.
We have to break with the swamp of traditional anarchism and emphasise the need for
anarchist communism, an anarchist communism that relates to everyday struggles. We need to
assert the need for a specific anarchist communist organisation, with both clear analysis
and practice based around the struggles mentioned above, with the aim of assisting in the
creation of a mass movement in both the neighbourhoods and the workplaces and in every
sphere of life. We need propaganda and activity, we need an active intervention in the
social movements. Our propaganda needs to be clear and free of jargon, able to relate to
the mass of the population, and it needs to be on a mass basis as possible. We have to
develop a press and our social media. We need to actively propagate the ideas of anarchist
communism as widely as possible.
In order to do this, we need to strengthen and solidify the Anarchist Communist Group. If
you agree with these aims, we strongly urge you to join the ACG.
