Dear Luc,
Next month, we'll celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York.
As a global LGBT+ community, we stand on the shoulders of the brave people who fought back with pride and defiance against police brutality in 1969.
Their bravery paved the way for a movement in the United States and across the world that has achieved incredible results in 50 years.
Those in New York who were regularly rounded up by the police, forcibly outed, beaten, and arrested would hardly have dared to dream that within 50 years a revolution in social attitudes and laws would take place.
But today, nearly 70 countries still make being LGBT+ a crime.
Brave young people from a very different generation are risking everything right now to challenge this obscene injustice. They are criminalized for being who they are and they face constant abuse and violence as they attempt to stand together to show their Pride.
Right now, a young transgender woman in Uganda is preparing to risk her life to participate in her first ever Pride celebration later this year. And in Chechnya, a young gay man is literally fighting for his life, imprisoned and tortured alongside other victims of the country’s ongoing anti-LGBT+ "purge."
Should we expect them to wait for another 50 years for equality?
By donating to All Out, you enable us to work with our partners to plan and deliver long-term, sustained, and successful campaigns that achieve equality and justice for these 21st-century freedom fighters and the communities they represent.
Our model works. Just ask Melusi, one of the organizers of Eswatini's first Pride celebration. In a country that still criminalizes same-sex activity, a Pride parade seemed near impossible.
But thousands of All Out members rallied together and donated enough to completely fund a historic Pride parade. Remarkably, there were zero incidents of police brutality or other violence – likely due to the international visibility our campaign achieved.
This type of change doesn't happen automatically. Our LGBT+ community and allies need to think and act globally. By joining the tens of thousands of other people who have donated from over 100 countries, you can enable campaigns for change that will protect countless LGBT+ lives in deeply hostile environments.
Please join us in honoring the spirit of Stonewall at this critical moment in LGBT+ history.
Matt Beard
Executive Director
P.S. As a special thanks, donate $50 or more today and we'll send you a badass Fighting Back tote bag, so you can carry the spirit of Stonewall with you wherever you go!
