Protesters in Sudan Call for General Strike Against Military Rule

Protesters in Sudan Call for General Strike Against Military Rule

Sudan’s main protest groups called for a general strike on Tuesday, saying negotiations with the military have failed to reach a deal on how to lead the country.
Protest and opposition groups are demanding civilian control of a new Sovereign Council meant to oversee a transition to democracy for the country.
The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) said the army was insisting on directing the transition and keeping a majority on the council.
The impasse has dashed hopes of a quick recovery for the country after the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir in April.
The Sudanese people are wary of military rule. They do not want to recreate a similar situation as in neighboring Egypt, where the head of the army eventually became president after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak. Sudanese protesters have sought guarantees of civilian control in the transition.
Protesters have also been pushing for justice over the deaths of scores of demonstrators since December.
Bashir and some of his aides have been arrested, but the military has maintained power and prevented the arrest of Salah Abdallah Mohamed Saleh, the former intelligence chief.
