Dear friends, In 2017, a U.S. government inspector found shocking conditions at Double G Kennels, a commercial breeding facility (otherwise known as a puppy mill) in Marion County, Iowa. In addition to discovering two emaciated dogs, the inspector noticed that one of the pups, a female shih tzu, was nursing six puppies — despite her condition. Other dogs in the facility were too close to heating sources, at risk of being burned. Nearly two dozen puppies were living in unsafe enclosures in which their feet and legs could slip through wire flooring. The next year, inspectors with the U.S. Department of Agriculture returned to Double G Kennels and found a chihuahua with excessively long nails that impeded her ability to stand normally. Dogs in a whelping area had inadequate head space. The puppy mill was included in the Humane Society of the United States' "Horrible Hundred 2018" list of the worst of these facilities in the country. Now, multiple cases of canine brucellosis have been reported at the puppy mill. This disease is highly contagious, chronic, and incurable — and it can be transmitted from dogs to humans. Ground zero for this outbreak has been determined to be Double G Kennels. Among both dogs and humans, canine brucellosis can be disastrous. While many people infected with the disease only experience mild symptoms like fevers and headaches, it can be far more serious for pregnant women and pups. That's because this disease can cause reproductive issues including infertility, stillbirths, miscarriages and premature births, as well as sperm abnormalities in males. For these reasons, dogs that test positive for canine brucellosis are usually euthanized. As a result, Double G Kennels is currently closed and under quarantine while the dogs are being tested. But based on its history of mistreating dogs, Double G Kennels should never re-open for business.
