Dear friends,
Since 1990, more than 20% of the forests of the Solomon Islands have disappeared. The islands are being destroyed by clearcutting, and the cause is clear. The timber industry is choosing short term profits over the wishes and the needs of the people who call these islands home.
Residents are standing up and fighting back. They're doing what's right. And they're being thrown in jail.
When logging corporation Xiang Lin SI Ltd started clearcutting forests on the island illegally, the local Nende Islanders banded together to fight back. While authorities should be holding this greedy company accountable for breaking the law, they're going after the protestors instead. Some of them, now known as the "Nende Five," have been arrested and could even face serious jail time if they are found guilty.
The Xiang Lin company has bulldozed over the law and over the trees. We can't let them crush the activists standing in their way.
Thank you,
P.S. Standing up to protect your home shouldn't land you in jail.Demand justice for the "Nende Five" activists who opposed the destruction of forests in their village!
