Amazon Workers Plan Strike in Minnesota
Workers at an Amazon warehouse in Shakopee, Minnesota plan to strike for six hours July 15th, one of the company’s busiest shopping days, to demand safer working conditions and secure jobs.
There have been a number of strikes at Amazon warehouses on major shopping days, but most of those have been in Europe.
Workers want Amazon to convert more temp jobs into full time positions and want the company to reduce unsafe work quotas.
Amazon will likely automate almost all warehouse work soon and any worker victory will need to be a stepping stone for people actually taking over the means of production and automation or the achievement will be short lived.
July 15th is “prime day” a holiday Amazon invented in 2015 as a way to drive sales during an otherwise slow month for sales. The Amazon event has been effective enough that other companies have started to participate in the made-up corporate holiday.
