Child marriage is a scourge in countries all over the world, placing girls at risk of harm to their health, curtailed education, poverty, and domestic violence.
And in many US states, children can also still be legally married.
This week, lawmakers in the US state of Massachusetts, where between 2000 and 2016, more than 1,200 children under age 18 were married, have the chance to put an end to this harmful practice in their state once and for all.
In a rare move made less than 24 hours ahead of the hearing, the court delayed the case against Omar Shakir, Israel-Palestine director at Human Rights Watch, until September so that the government can address filings in support of Human Rights Watch’s position.
During recent visits to a camp holding foreign women and children, Human Rights Watch found overflowing latrines, sewage trickling into tattered tents, and residents drinking wash water from tanks containing worms.
