Interview originally published in Omniatv , translated by NoticiasALB. As we have already
mentioned , Pia Klemp was this week for Exarchia and offered a couple of talks, in the
squatter of migrants Notara26 and in K * VOX. For your interest in the situation that we
live in the Mediterranean today, we translated the interview that was conducted during the
vigil in Notara26 (remember that since July 8, night / day guards are being held in the
squatted spaces of Exarchia to avoid eviction promised by Mitsosakis) ---- Interview with
the captain of the rescue ships Iuventa and Sea Watch 3 ---- Maria Luca ---- (Photo:
Alexandros Katsis) ---- At dawn on August 16, Athens was melancholy empty, quiet and
still. Cars were not driven to work, nor did the ovens smell. Only in the morning the
buses began a procession in the deserted city. But at number 26 Calle Notara, where the
government intends to plant trees according to Kathimerini's report, why not settle the
political and media disputes of the deep summer, when else? Life flourishes despite
threats and unbearable heat. A group of refugees and supporters chat in broken English but
especially with open smiles and narrow hugs with Pia Klemp.
Like Carola Rackete , the fight against the criminalization of solidarity is embodied in
his face. Pia Klemp has been captain on the rescue ship Iuventa and Sea Watch 3, carrying
out many rescue missions in the Mediterranean. Under Salvini's racist law, she and nine
others were accused of "facilitating illegal immigration" and threatened with up to 20
years in prison . It is seen that the European Union's strategy to handle misery lies in
sealing the border, financing the Libyan mafia to establish a modern slave trade ,
deportations and illegal deportations of refugees and Frontex plays a leading role.
It is the abuse and criminalization of solidarity. For European elites, with a Salvini on
the front line, it is illegal to want to escape war, authoritarianism and poverty. It is
illegal to help those who fight for their lives. What happens if the crimes that are
carried out daily in the desert, in the topography of the horror that is Libya today, on
the border of Evros , in the Mediterranean Sea, are against all international human rights
conventions? We live in a state of prolonged and unwavering exclusion, where power
confirms its power by striking with its laws.
And how different is the vision of the New Democracy government? Since its first day in
office, the new government has established as a top priority the evacuation of unique
structures that operate in the context of self-organization, freedom and coexistence
without receiving a single euro of state or European subsidy. This is obviously the key
role that bothers the racist man wrapped in newspaper sheets, because the occupation of
refugee housing demonstrates in practice that it is possible to provide care and dignity
to people without barbed wire or hierarchies, interacting with them equally and without
doing charity, treat them not as unnecessary or dangerous.
That's why Pia Klemp came. To share their experiences and listen to love stories. Give and
take courage. Travel to Exarchia, which is never empty and never sleeps, with the
exception of Thanos Plevris's famous agroforestry in the square, visited sites of
self-management and resistance, spoke in two rooms full of interest and hope in the
occupation of the North *. He talked about solidarity and utopia that are inseparable and
do not allow reality to evolve in a huge and poisonous Leviathan.
Q: The media recognized her as captain in a rescue operation in the Mediterranean.
However, he has spent many years in boats campaigning for the release of animals. Let's
start with this
A: Yes, for the past seven years I have been in boats. For a long time we have been doing
business against the exploitation of animals in Antarctica, the Pacific and especially in
the Gulf of Mexico, where there is a big problem with illegal fishing, whaling and dolphin
captivity. The circuit behind these practices operates in terms of mafia. We have been
attacked at sea, threatened to burn our boat, we are usually in danger. In addition, we
have gotten into meat processing plants, we have filmed to show the incredible violence
used. Our goal is to make people understand that eating meat and animal derivatives
preserves the animal abuse system.
Q: In Athens there are demonstrations against the Attica Zoological Park, which houses a
dolphinarium, and some of the dolphins that are occasionally found in their tanks come
from wild populations captured by the process described in the Black Sea or the Black Sea.
A: I have read about that. I personally see zoos as a show of misery. They are places of
extreme abuse of animals that nourish children in the distorted perception that animals
are inferior creatures.
Q: When did you start dealing with maritime rescue operations?
A: In 2016 I went to Iuventa , did some missions and then took our boat in Lampedusa. Then
I went to Sea Watch 3 . Last June, we were informed that the Iuventa and nine other people
were being investigated on charges of "facilitating illegal immigration." Our lawyers
recommended that we temporarily stop the activity, as was done. Now we are trying to
gather the evidence and money necessary for this process. But can I tell you something? We
are a small part of the problem. The refugees are criminalized. The European Union,
through its practices, actually says that it is illegal to seek a better and safer life.
Many refugees and immigrants have been charged, but all this is in the air. Usually, ships
are driven by a refugee, either by this way of obtaining a cheaper ticket or because
traffickers force them to do so. Once the ship arrives at a European port, the first task
of the authorities is to investigate who directed the ship and arrest it. If you are a
white captain woman, you are a "heroine", but if you are a refugee who is prosecuted, you
are treated like a criminal.
Q: How did you decide to leave your home to join rescue operations?
A: I live nomadically anyway. I haven't had a home of my own in ten years. I live in
different parts of the world. I went to rescue missions because I had experience at sea
and navigation knowledge. I know my privileges as a European with a German passport. For
me, the exploitation of animals, like that of humans, is the result of a common system of
oppression and violence that decides that the lives of animals count less, that the lives
of some people count less. It seems inconceivable and unethical that there are some life
forms that are considered consumable.
Q: What do you remember most about maritime operations in the Mediterranean?
A: I have many memories, some beautiful and some ugly. 15 boats in the sea and we were the
only lifeboat. At that time we had to choose which boat to help first. We approached a
boat that had begun sailing with women from sub-Saharan Africa. We were about to give them
life jackets. Another ship was completely destroyed and people fell into the water. We
explained to women that we should go to support those who were already in the water and
had nothing. Then their hands joined and began to sing. It was shocking to see that they
found strength despite what had happened. They were not just victims, they were carriers
of history. They were the same activists, more than me. They claimed their freedom and did
not stop anywhere. The system failed to bend its desire. But I also have horrible
memories. People shouting that he was shipwrecked and we couldn't get there so fast,
images of women watching their babies drown and unable to do anything. On one occasion,
the Libyan coastguard first reached a boat, sank it and many people were in the water.
They tried to get them on board and many jumped into the sea because they said they
preferred to drown rather than return to Libya. We managed to rescue 60 people, 40 people
kidnapped by the Libyan coast guard and another 30-40 drowned. On board we had a boy who
made a repetitive movement from side to side with his body saying: "My sister, my sister."
He lost it and did not know if he had drowned or taken back to Libya. You save them, you
know how injured they are, and then the Italian port comes to pick them up, some are
friendly but many are fascists and receive inhuman treatment.
Q: Do you talk about what you have experienced in Libya?
A: You just have to look at them and understand them. Most come with shorts. They have
nothing. They carry marks of shots and shrieks. They are tortured and filmed to send them
to their families and earn more money. We met a man whose ear was cut at a detention
center in Libya. We have heard many stories about raped women. They go to detention
centers and are given a bottle of water every day or every other day. They have this to
drink and to use in the bathroom. Indescribable conditions that I cannot imagine. Europe
does not care about deaths in countries of origin, in the desert, in detention centers, at
sea. He only cares if a white rescuer holds a child in his hands. Once we had a
2.5-year-old dead boy on board with a Libyan coast guard. The Italian and French sailors
were close but did nothing. Our doctors on board tried to recover it, but it was not
possible. We had to put it in the fridge because we had no more space with his mother on
board. For three days, Europe did not let us reach the port. We made constant calls saying
we had 60 refugees fled. When many of us were allowed to arrive in Italy, they had
prepared a party at the port for the dead child. Port workers took him with reverence and
shouted at a priest to perform the ceremony. Nor were they asked about their religion.
They had just called a Catholic priest. It seemed completely hypocritical, because they
did nothing while the child was alive.
Q: Isn't the European Union responsible for the rise of modern slavery in Libya and the
crimes of the Libyan coast guard?
A: Of course. Libyan authorities make money from refugee trafficking, the European Union
subsidizes them to keep refugees in desperate camps, blackmail their families for more
money, put them in precarious boats and then dismantle them and return them. A cycle of
disasters repeated with European funds.
Q: You have been in Lesbos in the past. Is Moria a place that also crushes human dignity?
A: I have been to Lesbos because I have friends who work there. In this context, I also
visited Moria. It is really miserable. It is useless for people to have traveled so far,
so far, so difficult to find some security and end up there. It is as if they do not
recognize any rights for refugees, depriving them of the opportunity to dream of a future.
Q: I think you and Carola became symbols of the fight against the criminalization of
solidarity. Being a captain is rare, but also for solidarity projects. On the other hand,
obviously there is a set of tools, of means. How do you experience it?
A: For our struggle it is as important as everyone else. There are wonderful people in the
bailouts, in each post, doing fantastic things in the water. I know there is sexism even
in theaters, there are gender roles and stereotypes. We have to question and eliminate
them. But what we have been saying before is true. Selective sensitivity is activated by
the female presence at the helm, as thousands of refugees fight for their lives and public
discourse ignores them.
Q: Salvini's law is a facet of the evolving fascism of Italy and the perspectives of the
European Union. Are you optimistic that there will be resistance?
A: Salvini is just the vanguard. All European leaders are satisfied with this situation
and declare it with their silence and refusal to welcome refugee populations. The rise of
the extreme right is not in the future. We already live it. Barbaric Europe, the
militarization of refugees, the criminalization of solidarity are symptoms of this trend.
I deeply hope there is resistance and disobedience.
Q: These days, you could spend time in self-organized spaces and Exarchia projects, such
as occupying refugee housing. The new government in Greece threatens to evacuate squatters
and exacerbate repression in the neighborhood. Is it important to develop a movement to
defend these structures?
A: I came to express my support for this same reason. I find it very pleasant for people
to live and fight together. There is a community of solidarity, love and international
struggle. I love meeting her and connecting with her. We have to defend the squatters in
Greece, especially the refugees, because they are places of freedom with strong symbolism.
It is living proof that we can provide genuine attention to people away from violence and
police control. In addition, you cannot live with ignorance on the issue of refugees. It
is very different to hear about them in the news than to live with them.
Q: Are you anxious about the legal progress of your case?
A: I have no anxiety because the worst thing that could happen has happened. The right to
life has been criminalized as soon as the borders have been closed and the European Union
agreement with Turkey has been signed. This amounts to the death penalty for many people.
From then on, I'm obviously interested in what will happen to the court. Whatever
happens, however, I will never take away my faith and my joy in the struggle for social
liberation.

TO THE PEOPLE OF MEXICO: ---- TO THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD: ---- TO THE INDIGENOUS NATIONAL
CONGRESS-INDIGENOUS GOVERNMENT COUNCIL: ---- TO THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SIXTH: ----
TO SUPPORT AND RESISTANCE AND REBELDING NETWORKS: ---- BROTHERS, SISTERS AND SISTERS: ----
COMPANIONS, COMPANIONS AND COMPANIONS: ---- Here we bring you our word that is the same as
before, today and tomorrow, because it is resistance and rebellion. ---- In October 2016,
almost 3 years ago, on its 20th anniversary, the sister towns organized in the National
Indigenous Congress, together with the EZLN, pledged to go on the offensive in the defense
of the territory and of the mother earth. Persecuted by the forces of bad government,
chiefs, foreign companies, criminals and laws; counting dead, grievances and mockery, the
native peoples, the guardians of the earth, we agreed to go on the offensive and spread
the word and the action of resistance and rebellion.
With the formation of the Indigenous Government Council and the designation of its
spokeswoman, Marichuy, the National Indigenous Congress was given the task of bringing the
word of warning and organization to brothers and sisters in the countryside and the city.
The EZLN also went on the offensive in its struggle for word, idea and organization.
Now the time has come for us to report to the CNI-CIG and its spokesperson. Your people
will say if we have complied. But not only them, we also have to with organizations,
groups, groups and individuals individually (especially from the Sixth and Networks, but
not only), who, in Mexico and the world, care about the Zapatista peoples and , in its
time, geography and mode, regardless of its distance in kilometers, regardless of walls
and borders, or the fences that put us, continue with their hearts beating next to ours.
The arrival of a new government did not deceive us. We know that the Mandón has no more
country than money, and rules in the world and in most of the farms they call "countries".
We also know that rebellion is prohibited, as dignity and anger are prohibited. But all
over the world, in its most forgotten and despised corners, there are human beings who
resist being eaten by the machine and do not give up, do not sell and do not give up. Many
colors have, many are their flags, many languages that dress them, and gigantic are their
resistance and their rebellion.
El Mandón and its foremen build walls, borders and fences to try to contain that which
they say is a bad example. But they cannot do it, because dignity, courage, anger,
rebellion, cannot be stopped or locked up. Even if they hide behind their walls, their
borders, their fences, their armies and police, their laws and decrees, that rebellion
will come to ask them sooner or later. And there will be neither forgiveness nor
forgetfulness.
We knew and we know that our freedom will only be the work of ourselves, the original
peoples. With the new foreman in Mexico, the persecution and death continued: in just a
few months, a dozen colleagues from the National Indigenous Congress-Indigenous Council of
Government, social fighters, were killed. Among them, a brother very respected by the
Zapatista peoples: Samir Flores Soberanes, finished after being pointed out by the foreman
who, in addition, continues with the neoliberal megaprojects that disappear entire
villages, destroy nature, and convert the blood of the peoples originating in profit of
the great capitals.
Therefore, in honor of the sisters and brothers who have died, are persecuted, and are
missing or in jail, we have decided to name the Zapatista campaign that culminates today
and we make public as "SAMIR FLORES VIVE":
After years of silent work, despite the siege, despite the campaigns of lies, despite the
defamations, despite the military patrols, despite the National Guard, despite
counterinsurgent campaigns disguised as social programs In spite of oblivion and contempt,
we have grown and become stronger.
And we broke the fence.
We left without permission and now we are back with you, sisters and brothers and
hermanoas , colleagues, classmates and compañeroas . The government fence was left behind,
it did not work and will never work. We follow paths and routes that do not exist on maps
or satellites, and are only found in the thoughts of our oldest.
With us, we, Zapatistas, in our hearts also walked the word, the history and the example
of our peoples, of our children, elders, men and women. Outside we found home, food,
hearing and word. We understood how only those who share not only pain, but also history,
indignation, rage understand each other.
We understood, thus, not only that fences and walls only serve for death, but also that
the buying and selling of government consciences is increasingly useless. They no longer
cheat, they no longer convince, they oxidize, they break, they fail.
So we go out. The Mandón was left behind, thinking that his fence, fences kept us. From
afar we saw their backs from National Guards, soldiers, police, projects, aid and lies. We
went and returned, we entered and left. 10, 100, 1000 times we did it and the Mandón
watched without looking at us, confident in the fear that his fear gave.
Like a dirty stain, the fencers were left, surrounded by them in a now more extended
territory, a territory that transmits rebellion.
Brothers, companions:
We appear before you with new Caracoles and more autonomous Zapatista rebel municipalities
in new areas of southeastern Mexico.
Now we will also have Autonomous Resistance and Zapatista Rebellion Centers. In most
cases, these centers will also host snails, Good Government Boards and Zapatista Rebel
Autonomous Municipalities (marez).
Although slowly, as it should be by name, the 5 original snails were reproduced after 15
years of political and organizational work; and the MAREZ and its Good Government Boards
also had to raise and watch them grow. Now there will be 12 snails with their Good
Government Boards.
This exponential growth, which today allows us to leave the fence again, is mainly due to
two things:
One, and the most important, is the organizational political work and the example of the
Zapatista women, men, children and elderly support bases. Of outstanding way, of the women
and young zapatistas. Companions of all ages mobilized to talk with other sisters with or
without organization. The young Zapatistas, without abandoning their tastes and desires,
learned about science and the arts, and thus infected more and more young people. Most of
that youth, mainly women, take office and soak them in their creativity, ingenuity and
intelligence. So we can say, without sorrow and with pride, that the Zapatista women not
only go ahead to, like the Pujuy bird, mark the way and not get lost: also to the sides so
that we do not deviate; and back so we don't delay.
The other is the destructive government policy of community and nature, particularly that
of the current self-styled "Fourth Transformation" government. Traditionally partisan
communities have been hurt by the contempt, racism and voracity of the current government,
and have gone into open or hidden rebellion. Who thought that with his counterinsurgent
alms policy, he would divide Zapatismo and buy the loyalty of non-Zapatistas, encouraging
confrontation and discouragement, gave the missing arguments to convince those brothers
and sisters that it is necessary to defend the land and nature.
The bad government thought and thinks that what people expect and need are monetary alms.
Now, the Zapatista peoples and many non-Zapatista peoples, as well as the sister towns of
the CNI in southeastern Mexico and throughout the country, answer him and prove that he is
wrong.
We understand that the current foreman was trained in the PRI and the "indigenist"
conception in which the natives yearn to sell their dignity and cease to be what they are,
and that the indigenous is a museum piece, multicolored crafts for the powerful to hide
The gray of his heart. That is why his concern that his train-walls (that of the Isthmus
and the badly called "Maya") incorporate the ruins of a civilization into the landscape,
so that they delight the tourist.
But the natives are alive and rebellious and resisting; and the foreman now intends to
reissue one of his caporales, a lawyer who was once indigenous, and who now, as throughout
world history, is dedicated to dividing, persecuting and manipulating those who once were
his fellow men. The holder of the INPI is carved everyday conscience with pumice stone to
eliminate any trace of dignity. He thinks that his skin is whitened and his reason is that
of the Mandón. The foreman congratulates him and congratulates himself: there is nothing
better to try to control rebels than a repentant, turned by pay, into the puppet of the
oppressor.
- * -
During these more than 25 years we have learned.
Instead of escalating the charges of bad government or becoming a bad copy of those who
humiliate and oppress us, our intelligence and knowledge was dedicated to our own growth
and strength.
Thanks to the sisters, brothers and sisters of Mexico and the world who participated in
the meetings and seedbeds we summoned at this time, our imagination and creativity, as
well as our knowledge, opened up and became more universal, that is, more humans. We
learned to look, listen and speak the other without mockery, without condemnation, without
labels. We learned that a dream that does not cover the world is a small dream.
What is now known and public, was a long process of reflection and search. Thousands of
Zapatista community assemblies, in the mountains of southeastern Mexico, thought and
looked for ways, ways, times. Challenging the contempt of the powerful, who dismisses us
as ignorant and foolish, we use intelligence, knowledge and imagination.
Here we name the new Centers of Autonomous Resistance and Zapatista Rebellion (CRAREZ).
There are 11 new Centers, plus the 5 original snails, 16. In addition to the original
autonomous municipalities, which are 27, total Zapatista centers are 43.

We take this opportunity to invite the Sixth, the Networks, the CNI and the honest people
to come and, together with the Zapatista peoples, participate in the construction of the
CRAREZ, be it obtaining materials and economic support, be hammering, cutting, loading,
orienting and living with us. Or in the way and way they see that suits them. In the next
few days we will publish a letter explaining how, when and where they can register to
participate.

Brothers and companions:
At the CNI-CIG we summon you to meet and know the work we have committed to, share the
problems, the difficulties, the blows, the fainting, but also the seeds that serve to
harvest better from the fight, and the seeds that we see that It does not give us a better
harvest, which leads us to the opposite, so that we no longer do that. To meet those who
are really wanting the organizational struggle, that we meet to talk about the good
harvests and the bad ones too. Specifically we propose the joint realization, in one of
the Snails, of what could be called FORUM IN DEFENSE OF THE TERRITORY AND MOTHER EARTH, or
as you see better, open to all people, groups, groups and organizations that are committed
to that fight for life. The date we propose to you is in this month of October 2019, on
the days that you see most convenient. Likewise, we offer one of the Snails for the
meeting or assembly of the CNI-CIG, on the date that suits them.
We call the SIXTH AND THE NETWORKS to begin the analysis and discussion for the formation
of an International Network of Resistance and Rebellion, Polo, Nucleus, Federation,
Confederation, or whatever it is called, based on the independence and autonomy of those
who form it , explicitly renouncing to hegemonize and homogenize, in which mutual
solidarity and support are unconditional, share the good and bad experiences of each
other's struggle, and work on the dissemination of the stories below and to the left.
For this, as Zapatistas we are, we will convene bilateral meetings with groups, groups and
organizations that are working on their geographies. We will not hold large meetings. In
the coming days we will announce the how, when and where of these bilateral meetings that
we propose. Of course, to those who accept, and taking into account their calendars and
geographies.
TO THOSE WHO MAKE ART, SCIENCE AND CRITICAL THOUGHT YOUR VOCATION AND LIFE, we will invite
you to festivals, meetings, seedbeds, parties, exchanges, or whatever those shares are
going to be called. We will already know how, when and where they could be done. This
includes the CompArte and the "Puy ta Cuxlejaltic" Film Festival, but not only. We think
about making special CompArts according to each Art. For example: Theater, Dance, Plastic
Arts, Literature, Music, etc. There will be another edition of the ConCiences, perhaps
starting with the Social Sciences. Seedlings of Critical Thinking will be held, perhaps
beginning with the theme of the Storm.
AND, ESPECIALLY, TO THOSE WHO WALK WITH PAIN AND RABIA, WITH RESISTANCE AND REBELDIA, AND
ARE PERSECUTED:
We will convene meetings of relatives of the murdered, disappeared and imprisoned, as well
as organizations, groups and groups that accompany their pain, their anger and their
search for truth and justice. It will have as its only objective that they know each other
and exchange not only pains, but also and especially their experiences in that search. The
Zapatista peoples will limit ourselves to being hosts.
The Zapatista companions will summon a new Meeting of Women who fight, in the times,
places and modalities that they decide, and will let them know when and by the means they
say. Once we let you know that it will be only for women, so you can not give more data
until they say.
We will see if there is a way to make a meeting of others , with the objective that they
share, in addition to their pains, the injustices, persecutions and other chingaderas that
make them, their forms of struggle and their strength. The Zapatista peoples will limit
ourselves to being hosts.
We will see if a meeting of groups, groups and organizations defending Human Rights is
possible, in the form and modality they decide. The Zapatista peoples will limit ourselves
to being hosts.

Partners and siblings:
Here we are, we are Zapatistas. To be looked at, we covered our faces; to be named, we
deny our name; we bet on the present to have a future, and, to live, we die. We are
Zapatistas, mostly indigenous with Mayan roots, and we don't sell ourselves, we don't give
up and we don't give up.
We are rebellion and resistance. We are one of many mallets that will break the walls, one
of so many winds that will sweep the earth, and one of many seeds from which other worlds
will be born.
We are the Zapatista Army of National Liberation.
From the mountains of the mexican southeast.
On behalf of the men, women, children and the elderly, Zapatista support bases and the

I have always taken the support of people prosecuted for their activities in various
emancipation movements as a matter of course. After reading the booklet from the Anarchist
Black Cross (ABC), I had to ask myself a few questions. It's called Why All Prisoners Are
Political Prisoners / Casey Brezik and his support and reading won't take much time. In my
case it was two tram rides. ---- As the name suggests, it consists of two parts. The first
is from Xosé Tarria, who went to a Spanish prison for petty theft and eventually died
there after 16 years. This briefly discusses the origins of the modern prison, which can
be traced back to the 17th century, when the developing bourgeois mentality preached that
offenses should be paid by the convict over time. Yet the institution of prison is nothing
so common in history as one would think today. Tarrio draws attention to the fabricated
definition of crime and criminal and the hypocritical functioning of prisons themselves
that do not fulfill any of their would-be resocialization functions.
Thus, the answer to the 'question' in the title of the brochure seems to be that all
prisoners are political simply because they are detained on the basis of a (actually
doubtful) legality, the form and interpretation of which is determined by the current
regime. It is not therefore about understanding a political prisoner as a conscious
opponent of the regime. But is such a confusion of terms good? And is the regime's
imprisoned opponent really as political as his fellow prisoner for rape?
The second part is the story of Casey Brezik, a young supporter of anarchism with mental
health problems who, in a drug jam, decided to attack with the knife of the Governor of
Missouri. But since he wasn't there, he stabbed at least the one who ran the slowest, the
Rector of Kansas City.
His description of events is truly readable and obviously does not obscure anything. He
concludes that there was no anarchist in the court that sent him to prison for 12 years to
support him with his presence.
In the brochure you will find an address where you can write to Casey, but the website to
support Casey is unavailable. On the ABC pages of the brochure, there is a note: "We do
not consider the acts Casey is condemned to be right for, but we do not want to spend time
in prison. We believe that no one should be there and that all prisons should be
abolished. That is why we publish this publication. That's why we support Casey. "But...
The logic of this political stance says that every prisoner deserves our support (and a
booklet), because no one should be in prison. Regardless of the fact that the prison
institution is only a piece of the wheel of social control and oppression, there is also a
personal attitude. It is up to everyone to decide to support. Although it is continually
argued, it is not in fact the duty of any anarchist to support someone who also professes
to be anarchist if he has personal, moral or ideological reasons to do so. In Casey's
case, it is not so much that he professes to be an anarchist movement, but rather that he
should be given expert help instead of rotting behind bars. It is hardly surprising that
he soon received no support from a movement he might have damaged by his actions and
talking to investigators.
Supporting the prosecuted anarchists should be a matter of course for the movement, as
well as the possibility for everyone to choose who to support and how. But if we were not
just a closed bubble, it would not hurt to occasionally look around in your immediate
vicinity to see if there was someone who would come in handy for active support, whether
they were a prosecuted person or their loved ones.

Demonstration in defense of the right to strike organized by the SAC (Stockholm, May 2019)
May 11 this year the following message from our colleagues from Sweden appeared on the
Facebook profile of our union: The right to strike is under attack in Sweden. The proposal
of the Swedish Confederation of Employers 'Association of Employers (Svenskt Näringsliv),
LO, TCO and SACO (see box at the end), which will soon be discussed in the Swedish
parliament, aims to radically reduce the employees' ability to strike. On August 1, the
new law will come into force. ---- According to the protesters, this solution will limit
the right to strike and other available trade union safeguards and will affect the most
marginalized communities. (...) During the march, the situation got out of control when,
for unknown reasons, the police violently entered the ranks of demonstrators and
demonstrators. Batons and gas were used against the protesters. Media and social
networking sites circulated photos of thousands of demonstrations and scuffles with the
police along with news that the demonstration took place in the largest Swedish cities. "
What caused protests and such a violent reaction of the authorities in the country, which
is often presented as a model of pro-social policy and high work standards?
Swedish model - but not for everyone
The right to strike is guaranteed in the constitution, as in Poland and many other
countries. However, there are some restrictions. The Swedish system of bilateral
(bilateral) labor relations assumes that state institutions cannot regulate labor market
relations. Wages, increases, conflicts and collective agreements are regulated by the
so-called "dialogue" between employers and trade unions within the framework defined by
labor law. Collective agreements signed between two "parties" are to guarantee compliance
with employee rights. By signing the agreement, trade unions waive their right to strike
and other direct actions permitted in the absence of a collective agreement. 90% of
employees are covered by collective agreements, but these proportions vary depending on
the industry.
The dominant groups among employees of these industries are people who make their first
steps on the labor market - immigrants and young people. It is in these industries that
short-term employment contracts are increasingly abused and it is in these industries that
workers' rights are most often violated.
"Dialogue" at all costs
The highest activity of trade unions and strike actions in Sweden fell in the 1970s and
remained at a high level for the next two decades. The most striking professional groups
in this country include: port workers, miners, metallurgists and other industry workers as
well as civil aviation pilots. Traditionally, trade unions were at the forefront, but the
multi-branch Central Employee Organization of Sweden (Sveriges Arbetares
Centralorganization - SAC, sister organization of Workers' Initiative) also showed high
strike activity. Last year, the Confederation of Swedish Enterprises and the main trade
union centers: LO, TCO and Saco presented a proposal to change legal law that aims to
limit the right to strike and other types of direct actions, such as:
The planned reform assumed, among other things:
- the anti-strike clauses in enterprises covered by a collective labor agreement that
would apply in the case of the signing of the agreement by at least one operating at the
plant relationship,
- the possibility of a court to challenge the legality of the strike before it starts
- the right of employers to sign (unfavorable for employees) of a collective agreement
with an association that has no employees' representatives (e.g. an association founded by
an employer).
The proposals were to meet government plans announced a year earlier to limit the right to
strike. Two years ago, the Swedish Ministry of Labor ordered a thorough examination of the
regulations governing strike actions and ways to enforce the right to strike. According to
minister Ylvy Johansson, the Swedish model has ceased to work, and existing solutions do
not guarantee the resolution of employee conflicts.
Genesis - strike in the port of Gothenburg
The government initiative, supported by an association of entrepreneurs and major trade
union centers, was a response to a loud protest at the freight port of Gothenburg in
2016-2017, which spread throughout the country. There are two trade unions in the port
that associate the same groups of employees, belonging to the headquarters of the Swedish
Transport Workers 'Union (LO) with which the port owner (APM Terminals) has a collective
labor agreement and an independent and more numerous at the plant Port Workers'
Association ("Portowcy ").
According to Swedish regulations, only signatories of collective agreements are entitled
to information about the enterprise and paid time off from work for trade union activities
(equivalent to "union hours" used in Poland by the Employee Initiative). However,
"porters" exercised their right to choose a representative for health and safety matters,
and in the past also undertook negotiations in this regard. At some point, their
representatives began to be ignored by the board, which sparked a conflict in which
employees demanded a new collective agreement. The agreement was hampered by the current
(signed with another association) arrangement, which was not interested in any of the
signatory parties (ie APM Terminals and "Transportowcy"). Employees undertook several
two-day strike actions,
According to the employer, porters abused the right to strike, which, according to a
popular interpretation, should be a tool that is used when trying to sign a collective
agreement (which was already in force in the company). Mediators were involved in the
conflict, but no agreement was reached - according to Portovets, the negotiators were
prejudiced against unions not affiliated with the LO headquarters. In the meantime, the
current collective agreement has expired, and the "Transporters" refused to cooperate with
"Porters" to develop a new document, maintaining that the old agreement fulfills its task.
Due to legal and political consequences, the dispute in the Gothenburg port sparked a
nationwide conflict. The proposals of the government, employers' union and union
headquarters met with social resistance. A coalition of radical trade unions, led by the
SAC and the Portists, social, feminist, student and anti-racist and pro-immigrant
organizations was formed against the planned changes. The changes were also criticized by
lawyers specializing in labor law, who considered it a limitation of the constitutional
right of employees to associate and protect their rights.
Independent trade unions such as the Port Workers' Union or SAC have not been covered by
collective agreements until now, and thus no restrictions imposed on strikes and protest
actions imposed by the agreements. The new change in the law assumes that regardless of
whether the union has signed a collective agreement with the employer or not, the strike
and other union actions will only be allowed to sign the collective agreement. In
practice, this means that all conflicts that are not solely aimed at concluding an
arrangement will have to be resolved in the labor court.
In defense of the right to strike
In August and December 2018 and May 2019, protests against the planned reform took place
across the country. Central committees also participated in the demonstrations and
formally supported the reform. There is a concern that the proposed solutions will
consolidate the conditions in individual enterprises and make it more difficult to respond
to new problems and issues not provided for in collective agreements. It may also be
easier to challenge the legality of the strike action and favor "yellow" employer-friendly
trade unions. It is estimated that reforms will be most painfully felt by people working
in small enterprises, women as well as immigrants and immigrants.
The protesters do not give up. The "Right to Strike" information campaign is ongoing,
which includes information materials, training sessions and discussions. In the near
future you can expect further protests and the final resolution of the planned changes.
Social networking instructions are now spreading pressure to apply to employers without
formally entering into a collective dispute. So we hope that the labor movement in Sweden
has not yet said the last word.

SACO - Sveriges Akademikers Centralorganisation (Swedish Confederation of Trade
Associations), with about 0.5 million members, a union of professionals and

We woke up this morning with the news that the co-mayors of Amed, Van and Mardin
Metropolitan Municipalities were dismissed. Guzeloglu Amed governor, Mardin governor
Yaman, Van Bilmez was appointed as trustee. This practice, which is part of the
traditional state policy based on denial and destruction in the Kurdish question, is not
surprising for those who know the character of the order. ---- Moreover, Recep Tayyip
Erdogan declared the future of this attack with his words before the elections: ---- "They
say that we will take back the trustees. If my citizens give you the opportunity to get
them back, if you send the state's facilities to Kandil, we will throw our trustees again."
With this attack, the state showed that it would continue its policies based on
destruction in the Kurdish question, once again in the clarity that even those who do not
want to see cannot deny it. We also saw that not only the Kurdish problem, but the real
solution mechanism of any problem we have experienced in these lands is not the polls.
This attack, however, is not only about the dismissal of the elected and the replacement
of trustees, that is, the seizure of the 'right to vote and to be elected', on which the
bourgeois democracy bases its legitimacy. At the same time, it is a declaration that the
state is determined to increase the oppression and war policies of the Kurdish people
against the will of freedom and peace. Therefore, it is our duty to stop these attacks and
war policies in general, which make people hostile to each other, which means more death,
poverty and further narrowing of our freedoms.
We, as libertarian communists, know that true freedom can be achieved through the common
struggle of the laborers of all nations. The way to build a common line of struggle is to
be in solidarity with the attacks of the order and to resist together. The way of
resistance of the working people is direct action, that is, by going out to the streets,
stopping production, boycotting lessons and so on wherever we can. to stop life.
We declare that we will be in solidarity with the Kurdish people against the attacks
against the wills of freedom and peace as it has done so far, and that if the will of
working people from different peoples living in these lands emerges in this direction, we
will contribute to this attack in proportion to our strength.
Long live the brotherhood of the peoples
Long live the resistance live freedom

Currently, since beginning of summer 2019, a huge movement of strike is hitting the Health
care industry in France, and especially the Nursing homes for elderly (EHPAD in French)
and the Hospitals' Emergency unit. ---- This movement fights for dignity for workers and
for hospital patients. ---- What is new is that this movement emerged from the workers
themselves, inspired by the dynamic of the Yellow Vests, outside from the trade-unions
(even if unions are running after the movement to try to catch it and canalize it) ---- To
understand what is at stake, we republish below an article we issued 10 years ago exactly
... when we supported struggles and strikes of staff from different retirement homes. But
at that time those strikes ran only localy, in isolated movements, so it didn't last
enough for a global change.
While the overall situation has not changed from what we described in our article (apart
the name of the Ministers that has changed, but policy stays as ever .. ), maybe the
generalized awareness of the workers in this industry will lead to a general strike (and
not isolated struggles) that would achieve a balance of power sufficient?
RETIREMENT HOMES and ELDERLY NURSING HOMES (EHPAD): WHEN ABUSE IS INSTITUTIONAL
Up-dated version of an article written in February 2009
A permanent scandal
In 1998 over 20 years in 2019, ... The well-known magazine of Consummer's rights "60
million of consumers" published a report on retirement homes. His title? "The scandal". A
word that has not finished coming back every time it is about the subject. And which is
not there by chance!
Faced with the public's emotion in front of this "hermetic world, where too often the only
objective is the lure of gain", we have been promised, then, so many things! Not on the
overall substance of retirement homes - because the leaders of our society, based on
segregation, do not envisage any other way of life, more human, for the elderly. But, on
their form: "We will reform and clean up retirement homes' organization" became the public
authorities' leitmotif.
Twenty years after, all is continuing, even worst sometimes! Meanwhile a lot of reports or
books have been published, many TV shows broadcasted, a lot of trainings and round tables
organized ... It didn't lack anything to denounce the situation ... but with no change.
Let's take a few examples from people who have little suspicion of anarchosyndicalist
sympathies. After the huge heat wave in 2003, whose lamentable management constitutes a
state crime, "Le Figaro", a highly conservative newspaper wrote under the title
"Retirement homes: the scandal continues": "More than 4,600 of the 15,000 victims of last
summer have died in these institutions that are supposed to protect them. " As
"protection", indeed, we do better ... Guilty of having let die of dehydration 15 000 old
people, the government renews its promises, this time with the key, a "bright" idea: the
creation of a new tax for the workers, the so-called solidarity day (during this day, the
workers are not paid, all their wage is going to the State to abund a special fund for
elderly people), which - the government promised, swore - should definitely improved the
lot of the elderly. Result: workers gave away their Pay Day, but the elderly didn't see
any result in the retirement homes ...
And everything went on as before. Another example among a thousand: in 2007, the
investigation broadcast "Forbidden Zone (M6)"issued a documentary: "Diverted heritage,
unscrupulous retirement homes: the scandal of elderly people abused". Summary of the this
program: "Evil testimonials: Vexations, deprivations, malice ... reasons of absues: the
working conditions: insufficient resources, lack of control, lack of qualified personnel
... in this hidden universe where the law of silence prevails ..." In 2008, other TV shows
with a strong audience made the same observation ("retirement homes, from scandal to
hope", knowing that "the hope" appeared far away ...). Those who want, in 2019, to show
new images are sure to matter!
The more it is changing, the more it is the same
Indeed, if the living conditions are variable from one Nursing home to another, if you
"scratch" a little bit the surface, you would reveal same shameful details! It is enough
to ask the families ... at a distance, because of the law of silence: some homes threaten
to send back any resident whose family would be too loquacious ...
This is not enough to silence the witnesses, even if they are forced to witness
anonymously. Here, "the cleaning of the morning do not finish until around 11 o'clock
then, so we are force to have the breakfast around 11:30!!!". There, "little things
alerted me, when I came and I fed my mother she devoured as if she had eaten nothing for
15 days, then a young intern with whom I had sympathized told me, "Your mother has been
sitting for a whole afternoon tied in her chair with her glass of water in front of her on
the table, but as she can not drink on her own she kicked in the table to make it fall. So
I gave it to her myself. "Elsewhere" My 92-year-old mother, who lives in a
nine-square-meter room, never leaves her floor. She didn't get outside since months
because the lift is too small for her wheelchair." Or also this assessment from a
Physician: "drug prescriptions are far too numerous, with many sedatives and
psychotropes". A nice euphemism to say that they are stupefied with sedatives. And not to
mention the soiled patients who wait for hours to be cleaned, all on the background of
emotional and psychological misery.
The reason behind the abuse: greed ...
The reason for this institutional abuse and mistreatment is obvious and well known, "...
the only goal is the lure of profit" already said "60 Million consumers" 20 years ago.
Hence the exorbitant price for elderly Nursing Homes. It's easy to understand:
politicians' lack of attention to the aging of the population (a highly predictable
phenomenon) has created a shortage. As a result, the occupancy rate of retirement homes
has reached 98% and there are waiting lists! Hence also the reduction of "production
costs" and above all, the compression of labor's costs, and therefore a constant
under-staffing and under-qualification. Not to mention the small profits that are made on
absolutely everything by lowering the quality of meals, of heating, of bedding ... As for
outings and distractions, and even the real day-to-day functional rehabilitation, they
melt like snow in the sun.
Jean Charles Escribano, author of "We finish off well our elderly" and renowed expert of
the question, gave very interesting figures in an interview at "Monthly University". He
compares with the datas from the Association of Belgian nursing homes: in this country,
there is on average one professional per elderly person - against one for two elderly
people in France. And yet, the basic rate is for families of about 1,300 euros per month
in Belgium, against more than 2,300 euros in France (sums to which should be added, in
both cases, public funding to the Nursing Homes, which are equivalent in both countries).
As the cost of living in Belgium and France is the same, the difference of price for
Nursing homes should not be lost for everyone ...
The organization of abuse
Indeed, the standard for dealing with a population of elderly people with a high
proportion is bedridden should be an employee for one person (to cover the needs, day and
night, year-round). By keeping their staffs half-staffed, retirement homes organize
institutional abuse: the staff, despite all their goodwill, have no choice but to work
quickly, very quickly. One would like to push them to make mistakes, that one would not do
otherwise.
Here too, the situations are variable from one Nursing home to another, but the
testimonials (often from professionals who have left the circuit, the law of silence
requires) abound: Marie-Claude, nurse: "At XXX, there is only one woman to perform 15
resident's cleaning, clean 25 rooms and serve 25 breakfasts in three and a half hours ".
Mathilde, former cleaning lady: "At our Home, for the night shift, there are only two of
us for 96 elderly people, many of whom are heavily dependent, sometimes in palliative
care, and of course, there is not a single skilled nurse the night shift. We have to
"handle things" by ourselves. When a patient dies during the night, we are forbidden to
wake up the Director, as it could disturb her husband... We must do the mortuary toilet.
Morally, it is hard , especially when they are people to whom we are attached. We are
dying from this situation. "Jeannine:" Our job is like slaughterhouse, like in a factory.
We work with a tight flow. Due to lack of time and staff, some elderly people do not have
more than one shower per month. "All this leads to tragic situations such as in this
retirement home in Saint-Germain-en-Laye where, under a heap of mattress and a pile of
boxes was discovered the corpse of a resident ... missing for a year. A house yet
certified, like all the others, by the Regional Health Agency (DDPP). This does not
surprise the professionals: Management always knows well in advance the dates when DDPP
will perform checks, so they can "do the right thing" to clean up the mess before the
inspection.
Institutional abuse: employees suffer too
In a situation of constant understaffing, the staff are deeply mistreated and abused.
Not all though. There is a notable exception: the Nursing Home's Directors. In our country
where even dog-poo on the sidewalks are regulated, there is something that is escaping yet
to any regulation: being a retirement home manager. It shows how the State is concerned by
the security of the elderly ... To date, in practice, anyone can run a retirement home.
In February 2007, a decree was nevertheless taken to impose a minimum of competence on the
Directors, but it leaves them a period of ... almost 10 years to comply with!
But such leniency does not apply to basic employees. For them (they are essentially
women), working conditions are extremely hard: they have to work every day, day or night
work, holidays also, ... at the whim of the employer who has every facility to change the
schedules. Premises are often unsuitable (hence work overload); beds and equipment just as
unsuitable (hence musculotendinous diseases, sciatic ...), confrontation with aging and
death without support (hence depression, anxiety) ... and pressure for them to make
technical acts that they do not have the right to do (such as distributing drugs for
service personnel), all for lousy wages: minimum hourly wage (SMIC) or barely more (often,
to avoid seniority bonuses, these shock bosses manage to sack the oldest employees).
Moreover these real industries with high profitability rates often impose their employees
part-time, condemning them to precariousness.
There are plenty other abusive practices: unexpeted changes of schedules (which is a way
used by managers to push the employees to resignation. Case of Latifa for example: ten
years of seniority without any reproach, for which the schedules had suddenly become
incompatible with the placing of her children in day nursery ); bonuses different from one
employee to another with no real reason, just to apply the famous principle "Divide and
control the staff" ... A lot of Nursing homes seek to put the burden of institutional
abuse on their employees. This guilt, with the threat of dismissal and even prosecution,
is a constant sword of Damocles on their heads. Not to mention the Managements that make
excessive use of "layoff" ... So many ways to harass employees.
The government's response: repression and "hot air"
The government also brandishes another sword of Damocles with cynicism: the professional
malpractice. In Nice, an overworked emergency doctor works quickly (but well), has been
put in custody! In Paris, a nurse who runs everywhere for lack of a sufficient number of
colleagues, is mistaken about the bottle has been also kept in custody, and put on trial!
The Emergency Dispatchor In essones District didn't find, despite 27 calls, any single
room for a dying personn, the Minister of health express publicly its surprise and
suggests that he is incompetent! Meanwhile, the real responsible for this worsen situation
still do not feel guilty. Between overseas tanings sessions or few evenings between
"famous peopoles" dining with fine food and wines, they play naive, "we didn't know", and
continue the same policy. And hospitals or retirement homes, it's the same. Far from
recognizing its immense responsibilities, the Power wields the stick (threats and custody)
and the carrot in the form of the "famous-training -which-will-finally-teach-us-soon-how
to work well". All on the background of the famous verse "We will reform and clean-up
Nursing retirement homes." But still, the Power pretends to forget the essential: it must
start by doubling the number of basic staff!
Finally new: employees and families are determined to not let themselves crushed
There are still new things. The first is that everyone now knows that institutional abuse
is organized to increase profitability and it is a reality. In particular, families
understand that what happens to them is not an isolated case, a local malfunction, due to
a "bad employee" but the consequence of a system that takes full advantage of its
rapacity. The second is that the workers themselves are beginning to understand that elder
abuse and staff harassment are never more than two sides of the same coin!
This is not the first time that at CNT-AIT union we are dealing with retirement homes.
Each time, and this is the case this time again, it is in support of employee actions.
Defending workers dismissed under the most misleading pretexts, we note that these
mini-actions leave a mark. Understanding of the stakes and fighting spirit are manifested,
sometimes where it was least expected. Just as it becomes clear to a growing number of
employees that these "Top Managers" are ultimately only idols with feet of clay, and that
it would not take too much to stop their scandalous practices: a little "hyphen" between
all the concerned, workers, residents and families. A links between families and
employees, carefully avoiding all "mediators" whose role is to make sure nothing will
never change ("representatives" of workers, collaborative trade-unions, ...). Spread the
word. If we are more numerous to understand it, to say it, to do it, some managers, those
for example who will feel targeted by reading the testimonies, could be forced to change
practices ...
