Tikiiri the Elephant collapsed while working a festival in Sri Lanka. She must be rescued before her emaciated body gives out. In my work, I read a lot of sad stories about the abuse of animals and people every day, but the photo of this 70-year-old starving elephant shook me. Tikiiri is one of 60 elephants forced to work the Perahera Festival in Sri Lanka. For 10 days, the elephants must entertain humans. She and her compatriots parade all day amid frightening conditions — fireworks, smoke, and a crush of people attending the festival. Tikiiri has been bought and sold many times in her five decades working the festival, and it's taken a toll. She recently collapsed, likely from exhaustion or malnutrition. The photo of her emaciated body on the ground went viral this summer and has inspired animal lovers around the world to speak on her behalf. Will you help Tikiiri too? Her owner claims she's well cared for, but there's photographic evidence showing that simply isn't true.
