A collective interview with members of the Anarchist Federation (AF), which has been
operating in the Czech Republic for almost 25 years on the subject of present anarchism,
the need to stick to utopia, repressive state, the power of demonstrations or their
magazine Existence. The shortened interview was originally published in the cultural
biweekly A2 . ---- How long have you been working AF, who has been involved in it and what
is its main activity? ---- The Anarchist Federation was founded in 1995 out of the need to
give an anarchist movement, or at least the part of it that felt the need, an organized
form. Similar attempts have been made before, but always in a rather informal form. Over
the years, the organization has undergone its own development, but it can be said that
over the last decade it has been operating primarily as a background for local groups and
individuals and as an organizational platform for coordinating their trans-regional
activities. For a long time it is not important for us to speak under our own name. Many
of us are involved in other anti-authoritarian projects and collectives. But the
Federation allows us to intensify our voice as anarchists, to streamline our work and to
speak with one voice within the international movement.
You are connected with foreign members of the IFA (International of Anarchist Federation),
which currently organizes 13 member countries of Europe and Latin America from Bulgaria to
Mexico. Where is the strongest anarchist movement today and how does the federation work
on an international basis?
Historically the strongest organization in Europe is the Iberian Anarchist Federation of
anarchists in Spain and Portugal. In recent years, anarchists in Greece have heard a lot.
Until recently, however, there was a more loose autonomist concept without more durable
organizational structures. Therefore, we are pleased to work with the Anarchist Political
Organization, recently established in Thessaloniki, which supplies the scene with quality
analyzes of political developments. In the long term, the British Anarchist Federation has
been a great inspiration for us, and in recent years it has been mainly the Federation of
German-speaking anarchists. Indeed, federations in France and Italy are a significant
political force. The movement is also quite strong in Slovenia, where there is also a
significant squat scene and within the IFA there is Federacija za anarhisticno
organiziranje. And beyond the sea lives the tradition of anarchism in Latin America. It
must be said that nowhere is the anarchist movement strong enough to determine the
direction of events. On the other side, we are witnessing the emergence of various
movements that accept anarchist organizational principles without the need to call it. The
rejection of the hierarchy or representation, free plenums etc. could be observed in the
15M movement in Spain, Occupy in the USA, in protests for the Gezi Park in Turkey and in
many places in the case of the Yellow Vest in France. It is necessary to maintain
relations on an international level; moreover, anarchist ideas have always been
internationalistic, and this is a kind of nature of the movement. However, IFA is not the
only international platform. This cooperation helps both in the exchange of information
and experience,
For many people, í anarchism is past, or just consider it an unrealisable utopia for the
majority. How do you see it? Is it still a matter of provoking a mass social revolution,
as in the past, in Russia or Spain, anarcho-syndicalists, or is it an individual revolt,
modeled on Goodman, or the temporary autonomous zone of Hakim Bey?
There may be many approaches, and some may change in the course of life in terms of their
preferences. Yes, you need to be realistic. But at the same time it is necessary to ask
the impossible. What is impossible today may be the reality of tomorrow. Nobody seems to
naive the naive idea that with a wave of magic, everything will change for the better and
a paradise on earth will occur. The limit is possible and will always have to be pushed.
If we want a better world, let us want the best we can imagine. That's why we stick to our
utopia. Utopias in the sense of the world we are building or experimenting with in our
heads and hearts, as well as in the communities we belong to, be it activist groups,
neighborhoods, workplaces, etc. Individual revolt makes sense only when it comes to
politics everyday (personal is political), which is closely linked to collective efforts
for structural change. Otherwise, it is just another of the egoistic shouts in the
consumerized atomized society of today's capitalism. Temporary autonomous zones are again
meaningful only if they are not self-serving, but on the contrary they create the material
background for the development and dissemination of ideas and practices of freedom and
self-government. We are far from saying the best way. They differ in time and space.
As part of your publishing house, you publish brochures, the magazine Existence , as well
as larger works such as the historical study Steel Century by Vadim Damami and the
inspirational fiction Stories of Old Antonio by Subcomandante Marcos. What are you
preparing next?
The AF publishing house is just one of the projects to show the benefits of a federal
organization. The Federation brought together people who have more or less experience in
writing, translating, editing, proofreading, graphics, etc., and enable them to realize
their ideas and interests. And we are glad to say that we are still moving somewhere in
this direction and we do not have to be ashamed of our publications, although we are not
professionals, nobody pays us and we do everything in our free time. For example, for the
upcoming Anarchist Book Festival, which is held every year in Prague (this year on 18
May), we have prepared a pocket reader (not only) for anarchists about radical Buddhism .
DWe are also preparing a translation of the memories of the Russian anarchist Anna
Garasiev, who experienced the tsar and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Anarchism is a very broad concept at the theoretical and practical level, how do you even
look at such contradictory trends as the anarchocapitalimus so laundered, which
paradoxically proudly endorses the premise of libertarianism and free market?
Indeed, anarchism holds a wide range of views. But in order to talk about anarchism all
the time, not only the form (method) but also the content (ideas) must correspond. The
most fundamental is undoubtedly the absence of unnatural authorities, which corresponds to
concepts such as freedom, equality, solidarity ... This is for us a clue what we can
consider anarchism and what not. If one declares himself an anarcho-nationalist to promote
an ethnically defined non-hierarchical organization, he has nothing to do with anarchism
because he denies the equality and universality of anarchist principles. Similarly,
so-called anarchocapitalism. For us, this is a pointless contradiction that is not worth
seriously considering as a free alternative. If a company is to be determined by
unregulated market relationships that are based on unacceptable principles such as private
property, wage labor or its equivalent, profit preferences, etc., then it does not matter
whether this is done under state supervision or naturally. Soon social solidarity will die
and social inequalities will be promoted, which will be protected by some form of state or
private forces.

Police indifference, derisory budgets of state institutions, dwindling resources allocated
to associations ... It seems that in terms of feminism and the fight against patriarchy,
the state is not the solution but a part of the problem. ---- In early July, hundreds of
people rallied against feminicides in Paris, Saint-Denis, Perpignan ... Domestic violence
remains largely unpunished in France. A few days earlier, under the pressure of multiple
feminist mobilizations, Secretary of State Marlene Schiappa had announced the organization
of an exceptional Grenelle, at the beginning, on the issue of domestic violence. But,
unlike the government, feminism is not for us a communication operation, it's a matter of
life and death ! ---- Every two days a woman is killed. Last year a woman was murdered
every three days. The majority of women who were murdered this year complained. Since
Macron is in power, more than 520 women have been killed because of a woman. The State
intends to remedy this by a budget of 70 million euros against violence against women,

Does your company exploit you? Are your working conditions unbearable? Are you still
charging the same while all prices go up? Are you forced to do overtime? Don't you support
more rights cuts? Do you continuously chain temporary contracts? Have you been fired or

questions, it is clear that you need a change. Here you will find people like you, who do

TO INCREASE THE SOLIDARITY ROAD AGAINST THE EFFECT OF MODERN INTEGRITY -- Lecture:

state and bosses' festival at the Thessaloniki International Exhibition. An annual effort

reactionary public, along with its far-right voters, it promises to crack down on the

After the pronouncement of the First Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Higher Education
of Cuba - where he expresses a clear discourse of ideological discrimination against
teachers who do not follow the line of the Communist Party - the silence of the State, and
a precedent already worrying about the expulsions of several Teachers, a group of Cuban
university students and professors wrote a letter claiming their rights to free thought
and ideological orientation, in accordance with humanistic and regional principles that
must govern higher education institutions. ---- The letter, addressed to the Government of
the Republic of Cuba, denounces the violations of the Cuban State to the constitutional
norm that governs the country, as well as the international pacts in which Cuba is a
participant, and rejects the expulsions that have been made for political reasons .
Apart from this, the letter also constitutes evidence of the emptiness of autonomy
existing in Cuban universities and represents a legitimate protest that, in addition, is
not associated with any particular political group - being the signatory defenders of
different ideologies.
The current situation of the university as well as that of the country - as regards the
vulnerabilities suffered by political actors that do not follow the guidelines of the
Party -, plus the fertile scenario that opens up for the development of emancipatory
initiatives, demands from libertarixs a important share of participation in the processes
that are brewing in the face of state repression.
Raising our voices and proposals is necessary to ensure our insertion in the social fabric
that has been reconstituting in Cuba, and expressing our solidarity with the oppressed
minorities and social sectors is as much a duty.
The visibility of the safe letter will be followed by a wave of repression by the Cuban
State, which must be mitigated with the support of many who repudiate the abuse of the
police apparatus, which at the same time sustains all kinds of perpetual regime of social
injustice in any part of the world.
