The Renew Europe Group of MEPs in the European Parliament today provided a positive opinion on the European Council’s nominee for the next President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde.
The vote followed a hearing with the nominee on the 4th September 2019 in the Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, which evaluated the credentials of the nominee. Renew Europe MEPs adopted a favourable decision.
Dacian Cioloș MEP, President of the Renew Europe Group commented today;
“Christine Lagarde faces a challenge to unite the ECB and provide coherent policies in an increasingly turbulent global economy, but I have no doubt that she is the right person for this job.”
“It will be great to have a first female President of the ECB, which is a long overdue development. Helping the people to understand why decisions are made is the ultimate goal and I am confident Ms Lagarde will ensure this.”
Luis Garicano MEP, Coordinator for Renew Europe on the ECON Committee reacted;
“I am delighted to see a powerful woman of Christine Lagarde’s experience at the helm of the ECB and she has my full confidence. Parliamentary scrutiny of the ECB and its activities will be important in the coming years and Renew Europe intends to play a key role.”

Renew Europe approuve Christine Lagarde à la présidence de la BCE
Renew Europe a rendu un avis positif aujourd'hui sur la candidature du Conseil européen pour le nouveau président de la Banque centrale européenne, Christine Lagarde.
Le vote a eu lieu à la suite d'une audition de la candidate, le 4 septembre 2019 en commission des affaires économiques et monétaires du Parlement, qui a évalué les pouvoirs de la candidate proposée. Les eurodéputés de Renew Europe ont adopté une décision favorable.
Dacian Cioloș, Président de Renew Europe, a commenté aujourd'hui :
"Christine Lagarde est confrontée au défi d'unir la BCE et de proposer des politiques cohérentes dans une économie mondiale de plus en plus agitée, mais je ne doute pas un instant qu'elle soit la bonne personne pour ce poste."
"C’est une bonne chose d'avoir pour la première fois, une femme à la présidence de la BCE., c’est un changement attendu depuis longtemps. L'objectif ultime est d'aider les gens à comprendre pourquoi les décisions sont prises. Je suis convaincu que Mme Lagarde y parviendra."
Luis Garicano, Coordinateur pour Renew Europe au sein de la commission ECON, a réagi :
"Je suis ravi de voir une femme forte, de l’expérience de Christine Lagarde à la barre de la BCE et je lui accorde toute ma confiance. Le contrôle parlementaire de la BCE et de ses activités sera important dans les années à venir et Renew Europe entend jouer un rôle clé."
