These babies don't need to be surgically "fixed" or "corrected"

Doctors Are "Fixing" Intersex Babies With Medically Unnecessary Surgeries. Demand the U.S. Congress Ban This Cruelty Now!

Dear friends,
Babies are innocent little creatures. They come into this world hoping and believing and expecting that they will be unconditionally loved and properly taken care of. But sometimes, the people who have power over their tiny lives let them down. One of those times is when parents and doctors perform painful and medically unnecessary surgery on them to "fix" their biological sex.
These types of surgeries happen when adults discover that a baby has been born with ambiguous or nonconforming genitalia — otherwise known as being born intersex. It happens more than you might expect, and when it does, all too often the parents and doctors feel an urgent need to rush in and "correct" the situation.
To be clear: there is nothing wrong with these children. Intersex people can and do grow up to live healthy adult lives, all the time. By perceiving these children's bodies as "wrong" or "confusing," parents and doctors are sending a toxic and cruel message. Even worse, by performing (sometimes irreversible) surgery, they are depriving these infants (and their future adult selves) of choice while also inflicting searing physical pain upon them.
Intersex children should be able to grow and decide their identity — be that male, female, or outside of the binary. That's why human rights organizations have advocated for these surgeries to be banned, except in the tiny handful of cases where such operations are truly medically necessary. Yet many in the medical community are still standing by these unconscionable and outdated methods.
Luckily, California just became the first U.S. state to pass a resolution condemning the surgeries. Now we need the rest of the U.S. to follow suit. Demand that forced corrective surgery on intersex babies' bodies is stopped, now!
Thank you for all that you do,

P.S. "Corrective" surgeries on little babies' bodies constitutes an effort to erase intersex people out of existence. This must be stopped. Stand with intersex people and support their dignity by signing the petition now!
