Indonesia’s forests have been razed at an astonishing rate to make way for palm oil plantations – palm oil being a lucrative product used in everything from body lotion to cookie dough.
This deforestation has irrevocably changed the lives of millions of Indonesia’s Indigenous people who live in these forests and depend on the environment for food, water, and shelter.
Indonesia is home to about 50 to 70 million Indigenous people, about a quarter of the country’s population.
We spoke to Human Rights Watch researcher Juliana Nnoko-Mewanu about how palm oil harvesting is impacting their lives and what can be done to protect them and the forests they call home.
