A mobile team in Brussels, Belgium is helping support people with psychosocial disabilities, or mental health conditions, in their own homes – creating an innovative and effective alternative to hospitalization.
The “treatment” TANDEMplus offers is support, in the form of regular home visits to talk through people’s emotions and concerns. They help the person find coping strategies and tackle practical problems that have brought them to the point of crisis, be it a debt issue, help with household bills, or mending ties with family members. They also refer them to social workers or other services.
People supported by TANDEMplus fully control the support they receive, maintaining their autonomy and dignity. People’s human rights are at the heart of TANDEMplus’ philosophy.
October 10 is World Mental Health Day. Read the stories of the people who work with TANDEMplus to learn more about this groundbreaking way to help people with mental health conditions get back on their feet.
