The second Friday of November promises to be special: none other than Alexander Kobrin will be coming to Brussels.
The Russian pianist won top-prizes at world's most important piano competitions: 1st Prize at the International Piano Competition F. Busoni (1999),
1st Prize at the Scottish International Piano Competition (1998), 2nd Prize at the International Hamamatsu Piano Competition (2000), 3rd Prize at the International F. Chopin Competition (2000), and as absolute cherry on the cake:
1st Prize at the International Van Cliburn Piano Competition (2005).
After this last victory his career boomed excessively, and he decided to live and work in America.
In the meantime, Alexander Kobrin has played in almost all the major concert halls in the world and has been the guest at festivals such as La Roque d'Anthéron, the Beethoven Easter Festival or the Klavier Festival Ruhr, and has collaborated with conductors such as Mikhail Pletnev, James Conlon, Mikhail Jurowski or Yuri Bashmet.
On Friday 8 November, he will be coming to Brussels for the first time, taking with him a Chopin-program that is only reserved for the greatest.
Due to this tour de force, he is offering us a premiere into the history of the Brussels Chopin Days: playing Chopin's Complete Piano Sonatas.
Piano Sonata No. 1, Op. 4 is nearly never played on concert stages.
It is one of Chopin's larger youth works - the composer was only 18 years old when he wrote this work - and always stood in the shadow of the other two piano sonatas.
Nevertheless, many agree that this sonata is highly underestimated and is a hidden pearl into Chopin's oeuvre. Despite the long history of the Brussels Chopin Days, this will be the first time that this four-part sonata is being performed.
The Piano Sonata Nr. 2, Op. 35 can be seen as one of Chopin's most dramatic works. The well-known funeral march in the third movement is followed by a staggeringly fast and mysterious fourth movement that leaves the listener in total bewilderment.
After the break we may hear Chopin's last piano sonata, Piano Sonata Nr. 3, Op. 58: this beloved work can be seen as one long musical journey, filled with all the elements that Chopin stands for: melancholy, fury, tenderness and great virtuosity.
All this in the hands of Alexander Kobrin. You may not miss this.

Le deuxième vendredi de novembre sera marqué par un événement unique et d'exception : le pianiste Alexander Kobrin sera, pour la première fois de sa carrière, à Bruxelles !
Rappelons que le pianiste russe a décroché les prix des plus prestigieux concours de piano du monde : 1er Prix au Concours International de Piano F. Busoni (1999), 1er Prix au Concours International de Piano d'Ecosse (1998),
2ème Prix au Concours International de Piano de Hamamatsu (2000), 3ème Prix au Concours International F. Chopin (2000) et, cerise sur le gâteau :
1er Prix au Concours International de Piano Van Cliburn (2005).
Après avoir remporté ce dernier Trophée si convoité, sa carrière a littéralement décollé et depuis, il séjourne et travaille aux Etats-Unis.
Alexander Kobrin s'est déjà produit dans presque toutes les grandes salles de concert du monde, il a été invité à participer à des festivals tels que La Roque d'Anthéron, le Beethoven Easter Festival ou le Klavier Festival Ruhr et a joué avec des chefs d'orchestre renommés tels que Mikhail Pletnev, James Conlon, Mikhail Jurowski ou Yuri Bashmet.
Le vendredi 8 novembre prochain, il viendra à Bruxelles et présentera à cette occasion un programme réservé uniquement « aux plus grands », programme qui sera d'ailleurs une primeur dans la série des Brussels Chopin Days, étant donné qu'Alexander Kobrin interprétera l'Intégrale des Sonates pour piano de Frédéric Chopin !
La Sonate pour piano Nr1, Opus 4, est très rarement jouée sur les scènes de concert. C'est l'une des plus grandes œuvres de jeunesse de Chopin - le compositeur n'avait, à l'époque, que 18 ans lorsqu'il a écrit cette œuvre – une oeuvre qui se tient souvent à l'ombre des deux autres sonates.
Toutefois, beaucoup s'accordent à dire que cette sonate est très largement sous-estimée.
Ce sera aussi la première fois que cette sonate en quatre mouvements sera jouée depuis la naissance des concerts organisés par Brussels Chopin Days.
La Sonate pour piano Nr2, Opus 35 peut être considérée comme l'une des œuvres les plus dramatiques de Chopin. La célèbre marche funèbre du troisième mouvement est suivie d'un quatrième mouvement étourdissant, rapide et mystérieux qui laisse l'auditeur bouleversé.
Après la pause, nous écouterons la dernière Sonate pour piano de Chopin, la Sonate pour piano Nr3, Opus 58 : cette œuvre bien-aimée peut être considérée comme un long voyage musical, chargé de tous « les éléments » que Chopin représente : mélancolie, fougue, grâce, tendresse et grande virtuosité.

Op vrijdag 8 november komt hij naar Brussel met een programma dat alleen is weggelegd voor de allergrootsten, en mede daardoor zorgt hij ook voor een primeur binnen de serie: het spelen van Chopins integrale pianosonates.
De Pianosonate Nr. 1, Op. 4 wordt zo goed als nooit op de concertpodia gespeeld. Als één van de grotere jeugdwerken van Chopin - de componist was slechts 18 jaar wanneer hij dit werk schreef - staat ze steeds in de schaduw van de andere twee sonates.
Toch zijn velen het erover eens dat deze sonate ondergewaardeerd wordt, en ook in het jarenlange bestaan van de Brussels Chopin Days zal dit de eerste keer zijn dat deze vierdelige sonate ten gehore wordt gebracht.
De Pianosonate Nr. 2, Op. 35 kan gezien worden als één van Chopins meest dramatische werken. De bekende treurmars in het derde deel wordt gevolgd door een duizelingwekkend snel en mysterieus vierde deel dat de luisteraar steeds verbijsterd achterlaat.
Na de pauze horen we Chopins laatste pianosonate; Pianosonate Nr. 3, Op. 58: dit geliefde werk kan gezien worden als één lange muzikale reis, gevuld met alle elementen waar Chopin voor staat: melancholie, furie, tederheid en grootse virtuositeit.
Dit alles in handen van Alexander Kobrin, dat mag u niet missen.
