The European Parliament's Civil Liberties (LIBE), Constitutional Affairs (AFCO) and Legal Affairs (JURI) committees have cross-examined today Věra Jourová for the position of Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency.
Members of the Renew Europe group noted with satisfaction Ms Jourova's strong commitment to act in the European interest in subjects ranging from defending European values and fundamental rights, ensuring more transparency in EU legislation, guaranteeing more effective law enforcement, protecting media pluralism and the safety of journalists as well as making our democracies more resilient in the face of emerging threats. We are convinced that as Vice President for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová will work with determination and creativity, while building bridges to build cross-party support for carrying out her wide-ranging tasks. This portfolio will be in very good hands with Ms Jourová.
Sophie in 't Veld MEP (D66, The Netherlands) coordinator in the LIBE committee said:
"Věra Jourovà has a deep and personal commitment to the rule of law and fundamental rights. She is also not afraid to take a clear stance for progressive values like women's' rights and LGBTI rights. She will make an excellent Commissioner for Values and Transparency. Working in tandem with Didier Reynders, Vera Jourovà will make of the EU a robust community of values and of law. We are proud to have two Renew Commissioners in charge of the top priority of the Renew Group: democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights."
Pascal Durand MEP (Renaissance, France), our AFCO coordinator added:
"Commissioner-designate Jourovà demonstrated today her commitment to European values while also being able to give convincing answers regarding more transparency of Council decisions or trilogue negotiations. Furthermore she has clearly reaffirmed the need to uphold the EU's core values by actively pursuing Member States that do not respect them."
