Sign Now Dear friends, On World AIDS Day this year, Trump sent a tweet expressing support for people living with HIV/AIDS and those whom the disease has taken. But, unsurprisingly, this rare moment of decency from the president was too good to be true. Just weeks later, Trump and Congress have passed a massive spending bill that, despite costing $1.4 trillion, actually cuts funding to help fight AIDS. The HIV/AIDS crisis doesn't dominate headlines anymore, but it hasn't gone away. More than 1 million people in America are living with HIV/AIDS. Nearly 40,000 people contracted the virus in 2018 alone. Those numbers are scary enough, but they could get a lot worse if we defund programs. Trump knows this very well. His vice president oversaw an explosion of HIV cases when he was governor of Indiana after he ended a needle exchange program. Now, this heartless budget will leave more blood on his hands. Trump's tweet wasn't just misleading, it was a galling lie that tried to fool us into thinking he cares one iota about people living with HIV/AIDS. Too bad for him, we're smart enough to see through it and demand better.
