Sign Now Dear friends, The gruesome, medically unnecessary procedure known as "female genital mutilation" (FGM) sounds like something that could only have happened in the distant past — but it's going on right now in the United States. In fact, in the U.S. state of Michigan alone, several different doctors cut and disfigured the privates of more than 100 young girls who had no choice in the matter. Even more sickening, it turns out this torturous, child abusing practice is completely legal. Back in 1996, Congress passed a federal law banning FGM, defined as the partial or complete removal of the labia majora, labia minora, or clitoris. But then, in November 2018, a federal judge ruled that the ban was unconstitutional. This is an outrage. What's even more outrageous is that the Michigan doctors who were involved are still able to practice medicine. News outlets report that the children subjected to this violence cried, screamed, and bled while their doctors and caregivers sedated them to keep them calm. It's disgusting that the people who abused these girls are still out there running free. Female genital mutilation is a perverse and horrific act that is not ethical or in line with a doctor's Hippocratic Oath. That's why we need to make sure that the doctors who operated on these girls never practice medicine again.
