Sign Now Dear friends, Do you remember Cecil? He was the lion that American dentist Walter Palmer shot in cold blood near Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. When the world learned of Cecil's death in 2015, they were rightfully enraged. Cecil was the most famous lion in Zimbabwe, if not all of Africa. He had grown up wild but was used to being in the presence of humans, so he didn't realize the very real danger he was in. But Palmer didn't care about that. He just wanted a trophy: a cut-off head to put on his wall, and bragging rights. As you may recall, when Cecil was shot, he was in what was supposed to be a safe place, a research and conservation area next to the national park. In fact, Cecil was actually wearing a special collar that scientists used to monitor him. Mr. Palmer knew this, and shot him anyway. And then Zimbabwean officials let him get away with it. Yet all these years later, the Zimbabwean government still allows hunting here — a place where lions and other animals have been taught is safe. This is betrayal. It's inhumane, sadistic, and heartbreaking. More lions like Cecil will die unless they change the rules.
