Anarchists also have their golden legends. That of the "free communes" of poor peasants driven in Ukraine by the Makhnovists is one. The
Bolshevik power, by supporting these spontaneous communes, displeased the traditional peasantry. In order not to put it on its back, the
more pragmatic Makhnovschtchina took good care. An unexpected reading of the balance of forces in revolutionary Ukraine from 1919-1921,
following the article published in Alternative libertaire in December 2019. ---- By confirming their support for the creation of
agricultural communes in the summer of 1918, the Bolsheviks passed them from 242 (June) to 1384 (December) and spread the idea that they
emerged from the policy of Lenin's party. Anarchists are once again marginalized on the ground, as they had been a year earlier by the
Leninist revival of the concepts of "common" and "communism".
But if the communard movement remains extremely marginal (that are a few tens of thousands of people in a country of 150 million), its
actors nevertheless play a crucial role in the civil war which fractures the old tsarist empire between poor and rich, rural city dwellers,
non-natives and Russians, women and men ... The study of a canton in north-eastern Ukraine allows us to observe the phenomenon at ground
level, as close as possible to local sources.
Around the village of Izioum (north of Donbass), 32 communes were created between February and May 1919, when the canton had been taken over
by the reds in January after the collapse of a puppet Ukrainian regime serving the Germans . At the local congress of Soviets convened in
stride, the Bolsheviks were in the majority four to one. Their propaganda material, reproduced from Russian sources, promotes the communes.
The new power proclaims that " the confiscation of land from big landowners, kulaks and monasteries and their transfer to the disposal of
poorly-off or landless peasants goes hand in hand with nationalization in the industrial field.[...]In order to increase the productivity of
agricultural work and alleviate the painful situation of the peasantry, the Soviet government will collaborate in the extension of the
associative and social work of the land, by providing seeds, technologies and agricultural machinery ".
A branch of the administration is created for this purpose: the Land Section, with a communal office within it, supervises the transfers of
confiscated land to the collectives of poor peasants.
Bolshevik leadership that sees the instructions from the Kremlin echo down to the smallest village ? It is not so simple. In fact, if the
leaders of the Land Section in Izioum are also Party officials, they are not bureaucrats but activists on the ground. One had stormed the
local Tsarist police station in February 1917 and another had founded the first CP cell there in 1918, at the start of the civil war between
reds and whites.
Above all, they live in common themselves and propagate an ideal that they practice. In addition, if their proactive action bears fruit, it
is not formatted and calibrated fruit. The municipalities created vary greatly in size (from 3 to 250 members). Some take the name of Lenin
or Rosa-Luxemburg, others of Victoire sur le Capital or Notre-Travail. The international commune rubs shoulders with the Tarass-Shevchenko
commune (named after the Ukrainian national poet), and the neighboring Commune-de-Paris (sic) with the Evangelical...
Finally, with the exception of a few collectives made up of miners from the Donbass evacuated following the occupation of their region by
whites, all the communes are made up of very poor peasants. The latter had no say in the village community where the heads of "large"
families set the tone. It can therefore be said that without outside intervention, that of the Soviet State and the Communist Party, these
quasi-marginal people could never have gone against the weight of the social prejudices of their better-off neighbors.
Nestor Makhno, (1888-1934), animated for three years an insurgent peasant army claiming to be communist anarchism.
Thus, the organization of a commune is a concrete criticism of the patriarchal system of the village. This mainly concerns women, whose
voices are recognized equally in the general assemblies of the communes, while in the village, it is most often the husband who speaks and
decides for the couple.
Utopia in turmoil, between Whites and Reds
The traditional distribution of roles is even partially called into question. Elective responsibilities are assumed by women (although most
often they are the wives of leaders). And if women generally take care of children, a municipality decides by vote that it is only by virtue
of the experience they have accumulated in the matter.
Sometimes living together in the manor confiscated from the master, these rural proletarians experience a completely new life: work
distributed among all and all according to ability, sovereign general assemblies for any decision, conferences on the current revolution in
Germany or on the origin of the universe... The word circulates and certain meetings open in the evening end at dawn.
This realized utopia does not last long. In May 1919, tension was felt in the countryside, and it crystallized around the communes. The
"grabbing" of the domains confiscated by the village beggars organized in the commune is very badly experienced by the other members of the
village community, the small and medium owners.
The latter wanted to recover a little more land for their family exploitation and not to see the poor, women and cadets emancipate
themselves. Peasant anti-Communist opinion therefore turned against the Communists who seemed to want to take back what the Bolsheviks had
given in 1917.
The discontent of the campaigns plays into the hands of the white general Denikin, whose counter-revolutionary army goes back from the south
and takes the Kharkov region in the second half of June 1919. During the six months when Ukraine is in the hands of the whites, violence is
unleashed.
In the west, a wave of pogroms without equivalent before Nazism made 100,000 Jewish victims, not counting the wounded. On a smaller scale,
the same cruelty is deployed in the east of the country against the defeated reds: relatives of soldiers of the Soviet army, but also of
communists and particularly former officials of the land administration are persecuted, beaten, executed, burned alive.
Beyond the horror, it should be noted that this violence is not exerted by the police or the white army, but rages between neighbors in the
territories. The village community takes revenge on the elements which wanted to question the patriarchal order: the poor of the communes as
well as the emancipated Jews are criticized for not having remained "in their place" and for having wanted to impose equality.
In order not to get rid of the average peasantry, the insurgent army of Nestor Makhno hardly encouraged the movement of agricultural
communes animated by the poorest categories. The Bolsheviks, also anxious to reconcile the peasants, adopted this policy on their own.
Free municipalities ? Or artificial ?
When the Reds regained control of Ukraine in 1920, they learned the lessons of their defeat. They avoid placing Jewish comrades in positions
of responsibility and they change their agrarian policy. Bolshevik leader Christian Rakovski solemnly declares that " in the light of this
experience of last year, it was strictly forbidden for the Soviet organs to agitate in favor of the organization of municipalities ".
In addition, the memory of the municipalities is obscured. While all the archives consulted for this study attest to the voluntary service
of the communards, an idea is essential, until reaching consensus, from the right to the communists and Lenin and Rosa Luxemburg: the
movement of the communes had been created from scratch and forcibly imposed.
We find the same motif in Voline. He denounces "artificial" communes ", said to be" exemplary ", set up very awkwardly by the Communist
authorities, where usually heterogeneous elements were gathered, gathered at random, incapable of working seriously ".
He opposes to them the " communes ... created freely[under Makhno], by a spontaneous impulse of the peasants themselves, with the help of
some good organizers ". In support of his statements, he cites three municipalities operating around Gouliaï-Polé in early 1919 and adds
without further precision that: " there were also in other places ".
In fact, Voline, like Archinov and Makhno, evokes the founding of only three or four municipalities, at the time when the Makhnovchtchina
controlled a territory of 70,000 km². Whereas in the "red" regions of Ukraine, 300 are created at the same time, including 32 only in the
canton of Izioum which covers 1500 km²...
The "defeat from below" revolution
This discrepancy can be explained when one reads the program adopted at the Congress of Makhnovist Soviets in February 1919. It is only
proposed to " divide the large estates between the landless or poorly-off peasants " and to help as much " exploitation
collective[than]individual laborious exploitation ". The controversial history of relations between the Bolsheviks and the Makhnovists is
shedding new light. The Bolsheviks rely exclusively on the poor classes and promote a politically centralizing and socially communist program.
Approximate location on a map of present-day Ukraine of the Makhnovist "Free Territory" between 1918 and 1921.
Makhnovists defend small peasant property while fighting the state. Their program, the provision of land and the absence of central power,
respond to the wish of the traditional village community which became autonomous thanks to the revolution. The secret of Makhno's popularity
with the Bolsheviks in 1919 is there.
In 1920, the communists no longer supported the communes. They have in fact taken over the agrarian policy of Makhno, which they will fight
all the more easily. This means that the social revolution in the countryside is over. It is no more the fault of the Bolsheviks than that
of the anarchists, but that of a counter-revolution from below, terribly effective because it is exercised between neighbors.
The few communes which remain or are created from then on maintain their democratic and egalitarian principles until Stalinist
collectivization, but no longer play the subversive role which was briefly theirs in the midst of the civil war.

Activists from the Black Flag anarchist collective report that the squatted site, which houses more than 200 families in the southern
Brazilian city of Araquari, is fighting back against threats from the City Hall to send the dogs in. ---- Jardim das Oliveiras (The Olive
Garden) is a self-organised squatted zone near the center of the city which has existed on the site for more than a decade, but received a
court repossession order just before Christmas giving them 30 days to leave. ---- The land is controlled by the Secretaria do Patrimônio da
União (SPU), a federal body linked to the Ministry of Planning, and has seen multiple prior eviction attempts the families including raids
and notices to leave in 2014 and 2017.
Despite the State's hostility however about 680 people still live on the large site, including 245 children, most having been forced there
through rent difficulties or having lost other land and in recent years residents had been hopeful of some permanence after they started
paying utility bills to the city council fir services such as rubbish removal. Much of the community is self-sustaining, with residents
growing their own food on site.
Residents have been mobilising to ask for "regularisation" (the right to stay) in all houses which are currently in place and earlier this
month around 800 people including residents and supporters rallied at Hercílio Luz bridge and City Hall to bring attention to their
troubles. Eight houses were originally regularised in 2009 but the government has been reluctant to offer the same security to anyone else.
SPU had previously, in 2018, given the nod to City Hall to essentially donate the area to the residents, however municipal authorities, led
by Cabinet chief Pâmela Cristina Vieira, failed to take them up on the office citing the "urbanisation costs" of streets, lighting and
sanitation, and the offer has now expired.
One resident, Solange Borges Mota, lives at the site with her two children, a three-month-old and a seven-year-old girl. She explained: "I
don't have a relative's house, I have nowhere to put my children. I have no way to pay rent, we have already come here because we have
nowhere to live."
Indigenous resident and occupation activist Josias dos Santos has been part of the occupation for the last nine years. At the city hall
demonstration he said:
"We just want to live, to be able to have our family around us, to have schools, the best for society.
"Among us there are people who are in wheelchairs, people who are not even able to give a rallying cry today."
In a supporting statement, the Black Flag Collective said:
In the last few weeks we have been informed about the possibility of these 200 families being evicted by the State, including its use of
guard dogs, judicial and police powers to meet the demands of the ruling class.
In the last few decades we have followed the terrible interest in profits of large companies and local politicians who, with false speeches
about bringing "economic development" make the land profit only the few, destroy the natural wealth of the locality, violate indigenous
peoples and massacre the working class that migrates in search of work, education, housing, health, transportation and leisure.
What is the fear of the powerful with the permanence of 200 families, including 245 children and adolescents, in cental Araquari?
They fear the organization of the low. In this scenario the 200 families of Jardim das Oliveiras might open windows to build other forms of
resistance against all the exploitation that Araquari has been suffering at the hands of the local and international political and economic
class.
Therefore, we understand that, even with the little strength we can have in front of the powerful, we are joining forces in the act of
solidarity with men, women of all ages, children and adolescents in the occupation.
LIVING IS A RIGHT!
ALL SUPPORT TO OCCUPATION GARDEN OF OLIVE TREES!

What if the UCL domain name, unioncommunistelibertaire.org, became so expensive (say, 1000 euros per month) that the organization had no
choice but to abandon it ? This would leave the possibility to more affluent and ill-intentioned people or organizations to take it back to
put content causing harm to UCL. ---- Almost everywhere in the world, it is traditional for non-profit associations and political
organizations to have a website in .org. This is the case of UCL, but also of the NPA, the Union Syndicale Solidaires, Framasoft, Wikipedia,
etc. Check in the address bar of your browser: a good part of the sites you visit daily have an address in .org. ---- These addresses,
called domain names in IT jargon, are rented for a few euros per year. For the moment. Unfortunately, what we imagine in the hat of this
article is not pure dystopia but could well become reality quickly.
Privatization of .org
How would we get there ? Possibly starting with the privatization of the management of .org in the fall of 2019. Until recently, .org domain
names were managed by a non-profit organization, the Public Interest Registry (PIR) in the public interest, in the language of Molière),
itself owned by the Internet Society.
The PIR will now belong to a private investment fund called Ethos Capital, if the sale is validated in early 2020. This buyout comes just
after the decision to deregulate the price of .org domain names. However, this deregulation has been approved by ICANN [1], when a certain
Fadi Chehade was at its head. It turns out that the same Fadi Chehade participated in co-founding Ethos Capital the day after this decision
[2]. Did you say conflict of interest ?
Save the .org !
There are many reactions to this bad news, especially in the librarian community. In France, April [3]takes over from the Electronic
Frontier Foundation (EFF, an American organization similar to La Quadrature du Net) and launches a campaign entitled " Save the .org ! "
[4], which invites you to sign an open letter to the attention of the President of the Internet Society, Andrew Sullivan, requesting the
cancellation of the sale of PIR Ethos Capital.
More generally, this case reminds us of the importance of demanding that the Internet be sanctuarized, on a global level, as a public
service, far from the heinous hands of capitalists. We will continue to work in this direction.

AGAINST NEW AGREEMENT ON LOCATION AND EXTENSION OF AMERICAN BASIS --- NO CONSENT TO THE GREEK STATE DESIGNS OF THE GREEK STATE ---- On
Thursday, January 30, the new military agreement between the Greek and US states to stay, strengthen and expand bases in Araxos,
Alexandroupolis, Larissa, Andravida, Stefanovikio and Souda is approved by parliament. An agreement that - among other things - allows the
US to maintain military infrastructure within the facilities of the Greek armed forces and to utilize the country's civilian military
infrastructure, turning Greece into an endless war base for their imperialist designs. This agreement was initiated by the "left" government
of SYRIZA and is implemented today by the far-right neoliberal government of ND.
The upgrading of military bases and the role of various transnational military mechanisms is part of the preparation for the generalization
of the war that has been declared world domination, initially in the field where the competitions of the strongest power blocs, namely the
Middle East and the Middle East, are expressed today. , as the grim prospect of a global conflict comes back to the forefront and plans of
military-civilian staffs.
Within this treaty, NATO, as an interstate alliance of war and defense of world rulers, with an ideological vehicle for the "war on terror",
attempted to deploy its force and expand its "living space" by constantly "setting fire to it". gunsmiths "with more typical examples of the
two wars in Iraq, the war in Yugoslavia and Afghanistan, but also the creation of the state of modern apartheid in Israel. Within this
alliance, the American state has been the leading force in leading the campaign to establish modern totalitarianism internationally. Today,
it plays an active role in spreading regional conflicts and imperialist rivalries from Ukraine to Libya, from Syria to Yemen and from Cyprus
to Venezuela.
The Greek state, as a member of the European Union and NATO, is firmly focused on the pursuit of its dominant political and economic elite
as an integral part. Today's political management, like all previous ones, has fulfilled and continues to fulfill its mission in its
entirety, which is nothing more than the constant effort, in its part, to impede the modern dictatorship of state and capital. of modern
totalitarianism, worldwide. This common goal is, after all, the basis of any ruling coalition.
It is of particular importance that the Greek state, through the statements of its officials, was one of the few states to congratulate the
US on the killing at Baghdad airport, with the result that the Iranian state is targeting military bases in Greece in the event of an
engagement. . After all, this is yet another thorny example of the Greek state's involvement in the field of competition or even conflict.
We do not forget the bombings in Syria from the Souda base, the sale of military equipment and the planning for deployment of Patriot
special forces and anti-missile systems to Saudi Arabia, enhanced cooperation with a number of neighboring countries and the three countries.
(Greece - Cyprus - Israel, Greece - Cyprus - Egypt) and quadripartite (Greece - Serbia - Bulgaria - Romania) conferences with joint military
exercises in the Cyprus EEZ, support and steady cooperation with the Israeli state slaughtering Palestinians.
The increasing involvement of the Greek state in the military designs of NATO and its allies highlights the need to mobilize a massive and
militant anti-war movement that will target real-world leaders, putting internationalist solidarity among the peoples as the only choice.
the prospect of a generalized war. As states and bosses redistribute land, sovereigns extend their "spheres of influence", conflicts
escalate for financial and energy resources, EEZs and pipelines and war drums sound even louder, the blood of the people smells. that spills
and will spill for their interests. Peoples and societies, relying on their own strength and far from any aspiring patron, can fight for
their own interests. Struggle for a decent life away from wars, poverty, refugees and destitution. To strive for a better world of equality,
solidarity, justice, self-determination and peaceful coexistence.
Grab the thread of the anti-war mobilizations of earlier times and draw inspiration from them, build a strong internationalist movement from

The movement of yellow vests, slightly overshadowed by the actions of trade unions against pension reform, has not disappeared. Several
thousand people took to the streets of Montpellier, elected center of protests during the "64th Act" on February 1, and thousands more - in
Paris, Toulouse, Rouen, Nantes, Bordeaux and other cities. ---- The central rally in Montpellier was held under the slogan "Everything Under
Umbrellas," and it really found its reflection in reality: in the morning it charged light rain, during the day there were real tear gas
streams. And this despite the fact that the sun returned to the city at noon ... Already at 10 a.m., the first hundred "yellow vests"
occupied the Comedy Square in Montpellier: the schedule is unusual for this city, where traffic demonstrations usually gather in the
afternoon. Protesters continued to arrive in groups: in addition to the locals, some came from neighboring cities, and some even from Lyon,
Toulouse, Paris or Marseille. Within 20 minutes, the number of those gathered doubled; then this doubling occurred several times, and at
about 11.30 it already exceeded 1000 ...
"The movement brought together about 30,000 activists across the country, but you need to be blind so as not to notice the influence of the"
yellow vests "on the social movement," said one of the pillars at the Pre-d-Arena roundabout. In his opinion, the number of demonstrators
during the day is not a sufficient barometer to determine the power of the state of movement.
At this "64th Act" in Montpellier, some participants put on their yellow vests, others were in black, but many generally preferred more
restrained outfits, not counting the red clothes of a large number of police officers. After two hours of waiting at Comedy Square, one of
the protesters suggested through a megaphone: "Who is burning with a desire to take a walk before 14:00?". The crowd seemed to readily agree
to stretch their legs. Ahead was a banner from Toulouse, on which was written "Syr! This is a riot, no, this is a revolution. " People moved
towards the prefecture. At least 1500 invaded the narrow street of the Lodge.
According to Figaro, at least 500 black block activists from Paris, Lyon, and other cities joined the 1600 local yellow vests.
The procession took a decisive step forward. "We are yellow vests. And we will win. To weapons, to weapons! "- sounded in the front rows,
where black color prevailed. The procession took place in front of the prefecture, guarded by large police forces. There were no clashes.
The demonstration, which was observed from above by a drone flying above it, made a loop to return to the starting point. The slogans of the
15-month mobilization of yellow vests were repeated one after another. There were almost no hassles or attacks on real estate along the way
until they returned to the central gathering place, where only the McDonald's iron curtain was slightly damaged due to the proximity to the
arrival point. Finally, all the demonstrators returned to Comedy Square.
At 13.00 the police and the water cannon, parked on the other side of the square, went on to action. CRS special forces approached the
demonstrators. "First warning" ... "Last warning, we will use force." Words were lost in a vast area, and peaceful demonstrators were 50
meters from the police. This was the beginning of the end of the manifestation in its classical form. The final procession was formed to
leave the gathering place shortly before 14:00 in the direction of the prefecture. But after 10 minutes, tear gas canisters marked the
beginning of open hostilities and immediately split the "yellow vests" into several groups. Clashes continued on the square all day. For
some time, flooded with gas and cleared of demonstrators, it was again filled with protesters as soon as the clouds of gas dispersed.
Tensions followed by brief moments of calm ... The place was empty and filled again with people. By 16.30, 16 arrests were reported, then
about 21 ... As you can see from the videos circulated on social networks, there were wounded. After nightfall, the yellow vests still held
in place. Among the wounded - 4 police officers.
In Paris, the demonstrators were to gather in the Palais Royal and Louvre, in the 1st arrondissement, at about 1 pm. They were quickly
surrounded by police in Palais Royal, near the Council of State. The prefecture of Paris, by its decree, banned performances in many places,
including the Champs Elysees, Notre Dame Cathedral, Champ de Mars, Trocadero, Forum de Al and Saint-Lazer station, as well as on the
perimeters around such state institutions as the Matignon, Senate and the National Assembly, which the "yellow vests" wanted to cross.
The Paris police began to disperse an unauthorized rally of the movement "yellow vests". She used tear gas. The demonstrators gathered to
hold a march from the Louvre to the national assembly of the country, but special forces blocked several blocks near the museum. In addition
to this, the police several times pushed the protesters from the square near the metro in front of the Louvre. According to reports, one
person was detained during the rally ....
At the beginning of the afternoon, the demonstrators, holding hands, symbolically surrounded the cordon exhibited by the police. Police
reported that 3 people were arrested and 403 received an oral warning.
After trying an unexpected rally near the Military School in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, the "yellow vests" gathered in Fontenoy
Square, not far from the UNESCO buildings and the National Commission on Informatics and Freedoms. Surrounded by policemen, they chanted:
"We are here! We are here! Even if Macron doesn't want to, we are here! " They held their hands behind their heads.
In Toulouse, clashes between police and demonstrators broke out around 15.40 near Capitol Square. Upper Garonne Prefecture closed the area
for demonstrations from 13.00 to 19.00. At least 6 people were arrested. During the clashes, police broke into one of the churches to drive
out a group of protesters. At the same time, 1 person was injured, and the police shielded the videographers with shields and batons.
In parallel, environmental activists from ANV-COP21 and Extinction Rebellion held protests against excessive consumption in front of the
Galeries Lafayette shopping center in Toulouse. In the morning, One Voice also staged a rally against hunting and its traditions.
In Nantes, Caen, Lyon, Lille and Rouen, yellow vests also performed, which sometimes took place in a calmer climate.

itself says: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSy0c2fMOQo ---- "This is the story of Alan MacSimoin 1957-2018 a long-time Anarchist activist
and founder member of the Workers Solidarity Movement. MacSimoin joined as a young man the Official Republican Movement (Sinn Fein) . Within
a short time he was involved with the Irish Anti Apartheid Movement's boycott of South African goods in Ireland. He was also active with the
Irish Anti Nuclear Movement that stopped the building of nuclear power stations around the coast of Ireland in the 1970s. Alan was central
in the Murray Defence Committee in 1976-77 to stop the state execution of Anarchists Noel and Marie Murray for the killing of a member of
the police. Was involved with the Stoneybatter and Smithfield Peoples History Project. This is his story, in his own words.
