Miguel Chueca edited Camillo Berneri, Against Fascism. Selected texts (1923-1937). He has thus accomplished considerable work (translation,
introduction, glossary, notes) allowing readers to put these writings in context. This editing work is coupled with historian work thanks to
a critical analysis of the published documents as well as the sources. It allows us to better know the work and life of Berneri and thus
contributes to making available to the public a critique of fascism and, more broadly, of authoritarian discourse and postures. For all
these reasons this work will be a milestone. While reporting on this work (read the reading note below), we asked Miguel Chueca about the
life of Berneri, very little known in France. Laurent Lesquerre
Who was Camillo Berneri ?
The answer to this question occupies the first 40 pages of this collection, where I presented as complete a view as possible of Berneri's
life, from his birth in 1897 to his assassination in Barcelona, on the night of May 5 to 6 1937, which is often, and paradoxically, the only
thing we know about him. I will summarize it here in very broad terms.

At the age of 15, he joined the Socialist Youth Movement of Reggio Emilia, where he remained for three years. Then, influenced by the
libertarian bookbinder Torquato Gobbi, he abandoned socialism for anarchism. In 1917, despite his opposition to the war, he joined military
training schools before being sent to the front. Returning to civilian life, he enrolled at the University of Florence, where he followed
the teaching of Gaetano Salvemini and that of Enzo Bonaventura, one of the introducers of Freud's work in Italy. In 1919, he joined the
Italian Anarchist Communist Union, renamed the Italian Anarchist Union in July 1920. When Malatesta, returning from his London exile,
launched the daily Umanità Nova in Milan , the very young Berneri was one of his most assiduous.

In these years, he met the Rosselli brothers, Carlo and Nello, the brilliant offspring of a family once linked to Mazzini. After defending
his thesis, he taught for three years in secondary school, then in 1926, he moved to France, where he was joined by his wife, mother and two
daughters. Settled in the Paris region, he earns his living there by working in construction, for companies founded by compatriots. Aware of
the presence of a multitude of agents of fascism among the exiles, he undertook an investigation into fascist espionage abroad, the results
of which would appear in early 1929. In March 1928, he made headlines in the press as the main suspect in the assassination in Paris of a
fascist spy, before the young Republican Elvise Pavan declared himself guilty. Late 1929,Giustizia e Libertà , founded around his friend C.
Rosselli - in preparation for a terrorist attack, denounced in extremis by a spy who had managed to gain his trust. As he was apprehended
before the planned action was carried out, he was sentenced in Belgium and France to fairly light sentences. Meanwhile, crossing and
crossing borders, he won the "title" of "the most expelled anarchist in Europe".

His recklessness took some of his credit for a while with his friends at Giustizia e Libertà and his companions, which did not prevent him
from hosting the new Umanità Nova , while collaborating on other European or American publications. In 1931, he put an end to his essay in
French "Mussolini, a great actor" . From 1932, he began to write about the advent of Nazism, became interested in his anthropology in the
essay El delirio racista , published in Buenos Aires, devoted an article to Nazi sterilization, signed with the neomalthusian Jeanne Humbert
on book Eros contre Tartuffe , still unpublished to date, etc.

In 1935, he reconciles with Rosselli and debates with him about federalism in the columns of Giustizia e Libertà . The same year, in
Sartrouville, at the congress of understanding of Italian anarchists who emigrated to Europe, he pleaded for an alliance of anarchists with
the Republican Socialist Association and the Rosselli group.

In 1936, shortly after the victory of the Popular Front, he made his first trip to Spain and treated for the anarchist publication Más Lejos
the question of electoral abstentionism. At the end of July, when the putschists were defeated in Barcelona, he left for the Catalan
capital. He found many Italian companions there and decided, with C. Rosselli and the republican Mario Angeloni, to create a unit of
volunteers ready to fight against the military-fascist coup. Founded on August 17 as an Italian section of the Ascaso column, it experienced
a tough baptism of fire on August 28 at Monte Pelado, on the Aragon front.

After this first shock, his companions ask him to return to Barcelona, where he will be more useful than on the front, his myopia and his
almost deafness putting him at the mercy of all the dangers. Returning to Barcelona, he devoted himself to propaganda tasks, including
setting up programs in Italian on Radio Barcelona. In October 1936, he took over the management of Guerra di Classe , the historic organ of
the Italian Trade Union Union. Shortly afterwards, he was given part of the archives of the Italian consulate in Barcelona, which he used to
write Mussolini alla conquista delle Baleari , a study which, to his great regret, wasted a good part of the time he would like to give to a
deep reflection on the destiny of the Spanish revolution.

The increasingly critical tone he adopts in his articles of GoC towards the USSR gives rise to a complaint from the Russian consul
Antonov-Ovseenko to the regional committee of the CNT. Shortly after, he abandoned all the functions he fulfilled on committees of the
CNT-FAI and also that of editor-in-chief of GoC . He nevertheless continued to express himself freely, as evidenced by his famous "Letter to
comrade Federica Montseny" ( GoC , April 14, 1937) and his plea for the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification ( "Noi e il POUM" ), published
in New York. When this text appears, the 1 st May, he only has a few days left to live.

I will not dwell on the circumstances of his death on the sidelines of the May 37 Days since I touched on the theme at some length in my
presentation. I will content myself with saying that, in view of the direct testimony that we have on the episode, the political orientation
of the assassins of Berneri and Barbieri does not leave the shadow of a doubt. However, it is obvious that there are still many questions
pending an answer. For example, if we have every reason to believe that the order to kill came from the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia
- the Catalan branch of the PCE -, we still do not know why this decision was made and when exactly it was done: nobody cannot say today if
the fate of the two Italian libertarians was sealed as of May 4, when people wearing the red cuff of the PSUC came knocking on the door of
their apartment or if the decision was made a little later, the 5 for example, perhaps as a retaliatory measure for the assassination of
Antonio Sesé, one of the leaders of Stalinism in Catalonia. And it is almost certain, alas, that we will never know.

exclusively out of necessity? How will they regulate sexual harassment?

On the other hand, these same trade unionists, what training and recycling courses are they going to offer to girls and young people to feed
this sector?

It is an industry that affects the body of half humanity and debases the other media, potential buyer of human lives. Posts to open new
union sections for when a beggars union? When does the seller of corneas and kidneys? If it is a matter of negotiating, not with the body
but with the freedoms and rights, why not a union of vote sellers?

Trade unionism and prostitution system are irreconcilable, if analyzed with the heart and head, unless there are other parts of the body

We remember what anarchist women have historically defended and that we support today, as yesterday:

The General Confederation of Labor (CGT), in its analysis on the data of the Active Population Survey (EPA) corresponding to the fourth
quarter of 2019, highlights the situation of uncertainty and vulnerability in which workers are currently. ---- According to the
anarcho-syndicalist organization, this situation is caused by the continuing precariousness and business abuse, allowed by the different
Government through Labor Reforms and laws contrary to the rights of the working class. In this sense, the CGT states that the current rules
of the labor market game that has been created in the image and likeness of those who exploit the popular classes, must change radically,
