Dear friends,
Anti-sodomy laws are an insidious type of legislation that aim to enter people's bedrooms, judge them, and then throw them in jail. Their whole purpose is to label certain types of consensual sex acts as crimes. The effect? Many LGBTQ people in this country are still not free to fully live their lives.
Back in June 2015, when the U.S. Supreme Court finally struct down all state laws that prevented same-sex marriage and made marriage equality a reality, it seemed like government-sanctioned discrimination might finally be a thing of the past. But the haters just can't seem to let go. Instead, they're digging in their heels and trying to find any other way to continue to harass and intimidate gay men.
What consenting adults do in the bedroom is none of anyone else's business, and shouldn't be legislated. Laws regulating how adults have sex is just another tactic to jail, fire, humiliate, and generally up-end the lives of queer people. And in fact, that's exactly how these bills are used: to prevent LGBTQ people from raising children, kick them out of their jobs, and block them from finding future employment.
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, and Texas have a lot to answer for. Sign the petition and demand that these 16 states all repeal their anti-sodomy laws immediately!
Thank you,
