Renew Europe welcomes today’s conclusion of negotiations for a modernised trade agreement between the EU and Mexico. Dita Charanzová, Vice President of the European Parliament in charge of relations with Latin America and Renew shadow on EU trade relations with Mexico, commented:

"The conclusion of these negotiations is much-needed good news and a positive signal for global free trade.”
“We cannot only look inwards if we want to get our economies up and running after the lockdowns. We need to strengthen global rules based free trade, have a fully functional WTO, and continue to move forward with likeminded trading partners.”
“The EU and Mexico are long-term partners. Since signing the EU-Mexico Global Agreement 23 years ago, our trade flows have more than tripled, resulting in growth and jobs on both sides of the Atlantic. This modern agreement opens the way for our trade to thrive even more.”

Note to editors

In 1997, Mexico was the first country in Latin America to sign an Economic Partnership with the EU. In May 2016, the EU and Mexico launched the negotiations to modernise the Global Agreement, including advanced rules and cooperation on trade. Today’s concluded negotiations bind Mexico and the EU to implementing the Paris Climate Agreement. Furthermore, it is now the first agreement between the EU and a Latin American country that will also stimulate and protect investment. It will also be the very first EU trade agreement to include provisions to fight corruption, with measures to act against bribery and money laundering.
