The Turkish government is attempting to force social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to comply with any demands it makes to block or remove content.
These efforts to control social media are particularly troubling given Turkey’s already poor record on freedom of expression.
If passed, the new law will enable Turkey’s government to get content removed at will and to arbitrarily target individual users.
Social media is a lifeline for many people who use it to access news, and this law signals a new dark era of online censorship.
