With a series of uprisings gripping the United States, President Trump has not hidden his disdain for protesters. Beyond his threats to
Minneapolis protesters and questionable executive orders, Trump has time and time again directed his ire at one particular group:
"anarchists." Trump's constant invoking of anarchists to describe all protesters generally is a calculated attempt to delegitimize ongoing
struggles - that much can clearly be seen in one of Trump's tweets from earlier this week, where he wrote that protesters in Portland and
Seattle were "actually ... sick and deranged anarchists and agitators." ---- The immediate knee-jerk reaction to Trump's baiting is to often
argue that the people taking to the streets in Portland - a city that has been under siege by mysterious federal agents - and Seattle are
merely "protesters" and not "anarchists." But remember the old saying: A broken clock is right twice a day. Trump may not be honest in his
portrayal of anarchists, and he certainly does not have a clear view of the ongoing protests, but to deny anarchists' presence altogether
would be just as bold of a lie as the president's.
Anarchists have been involved in protests across the country since the current social justice movement began in May. Rather than deny that
anarchists exist, it's more useful to acknowledge that in the middle of an insurrection summer best defined by a pursuit for Black
liberation, Black anarchists are key to sustaining many of the ongoing uprisings. And while Trump may be out to scapegoat anarchy, Black
anarchists are not allowing the president to scare them away from the work that has to be done.
Part of Trump's invocation of anarchism depends on the broader American public's ignorance of the term overall. Often, people are only
familiar with anarchism in the form of entertainment like V for Vendetta, or imagine "anarchy" just as something that disaffected white
people do. In the American imagination, anarchy is nothing more than chaos for chaos' sake, detached from any political analysis or
meaningful struggle for liberation.
But in Teen Vogue, labor journalist Kim Kelly defined anarchism as "a radical, revolutionary leftist political philosophy that advocates for
the abolition of government, hierarchy, and all other unequal systems of power." What it means to be a Black anarchist can look different
from person to person. But Riley, who is part of Salish Sea Black Autonomists and organizes between Seattle and Olympia, Washington, said it
has helped them articulate what is going on in the world in order to better confront it.
"The anarchist critique gave me the tools and language to better see and understand my enemy and understand why and how the world is
structured against me and my people," Riley tells Mic. "But more importantly, anarchy gives me weapons and says, 'Don't wait for some future
utopia, but live and fight right here and right now.' It tells me not to be the capital or foot soldier for another's project."
Riley continued: "To me, being a Black anarchist is about fully embracing the life that is denied to us and living it in total conflict with
the forces and structures that subjugate, exploit, and kill us - the state, the police, borders, capitalism and the economy, work, etc."
(Riley declined to provide their last name.)
[Photo by Ira L. Black/Corbis via Getty Images]
For many Black anarchists, a commitment to radical politics also means putting community and care at the center of their own personal
definitions. Makayla, an organizer from Philadelphia, tells Mic, "[Being a Black anarchist]is working to develop non-hierarchical
communities and building mutual aid outside the colonial white supremacist structures. It is finding ways to heal people from state violence
and learning ways to sustain ourselves as a people."
Similarly, Tina, who is located in Dallas, Texas, says, "I think being a Black anarchist can mean many things. But for me, it means having
my cake and eating it, too. It means as a queer Black woman that my liberation is everything and that I am willing to die for that no matter
the cost. Because I love liberation more than my own life." Both women declined to provide their last names.
Black anarchists are not surprised by Trump's continued baiting. For Tina, it harkens back to the Red Scare that grew particularly intense
in the 1940s and early 1950s. During that period, the label "communist" was thrown around as haphazardly as Trump's use of "anarchists,"
with former Sen. Joseph McCarthy even forming the House Un-American Activities Committee to investigate communism within the United States.
McCarthy's campaign dealt devastating blows to the Black freedom struggle.
"Blackness is already anarchy in white folks' minds."
"Trump labeling protesters as anarchists is another form of white supremacy at work," Tina said. "Blackness is already anarchy in white
folks' minds. I don't think a Black person necessarily has to call themselves an anarchist to be one, because in the land where whiteness is
law and order you are already one."
Riley says it's too early to know the full effect of Trump's targeting, but "I know for sure there is going to be an intense crackdown on
anarchists, probably on a level we haven't seen since the[Earth Liberation Front]was active in the early '90s and 2000's. Grand juries,
federal indictments, house raids, informants, the works." However, Riley pointed out that on the streets, Trump's commentary may actually
inspire a pro-anarchist side effect similar to what happened in Spain in 2015: After a counter-terrorism operation against anarchists
prompted public backlash, people used the viral hashtag #ITooAmAnAnarchist to express solidarity.
Trump's logic of anarchists being troublemakers also relies on the popular "outside agitator" narrative. The phrase came up early in the
summer with Hennepin County officials in Minnesota blaming unrest in their city on people who live outside of the state. Later, an
investigation by the local NBC affiliate station found that the vast majority of those arrested were, indeed, Minnesotans.
The "outside agitator" narrative isn't troubling just because of a few instances where officials were obviously wrong in deploying it, but
also because it has roots in quelling dissent throughout history, from plantation owners in the South to massive corporations and beyond.
The Twitter account Midwest People's History, an "ongoing chronicle of moments when ordinary people got organized and made history," wrote,
"Though the specific term 'outside agitator' didn't become popular until the Civil Rights Movement, its sentiment was felt in the Antebellum
South. In the wake of slave uprisings, 'outsider' accusations were often used by paranoid white slave owners to soothe their shaky nerves."
The presence of Black anarchists complicates the notion of an "outside agitator" - to describe anarchists as random white people outside of
Black and otherwise oppressed communities is to erase Black anarchists - as well as the "peaceful" protester narrative that others try to
conjure to oppose Trump. But why is there an obligation to be peaceful if you are dying? The reality is that there are Black anarchists who
burn and loot, and it is not the ultimate sin some have tried making it out to be. Following the protests in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014,
Vicky Osterweil wrote "that for most of America's history, one of the most righteous anti-white supremacist tactics available was looting.
The specter of slaves freeing themselves could be seen as American history's first image of Black looters."
In addition, Osterweil noted the problem with prioritizing and defending "property" in the United States. Namely, as Raven Rakia said, the
term is racialized: "When property is destroyed by Black protesters, it must always be understood in the context of the historical
racialization of property. When the same system that refuses to protect Black children comes out to protect windows, what is valued over
Black people in America becomes very clear."
It is with this poignant reminder in mind that one should read a statement from Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf earlier this
month, where he said that "the city of Portland has been under siege for 47 straight days by a violent mob. ... Each night, lawless
anarchists destroy and desecrate property, including the federal courthouse, and attack the brave law enforcement officers protecting it."
While Wolf makes strong claims, they do not capture the entire picture. Makayla identifies Black anarchists as "[being]on the front lines
since day one," assisting other protesters by teaching useful organizing tactics. For example, one common - and vital - protest skill
associated with anarchists is street medicine. These skills are vital during protests when the state is often the one harming people and
calling 911 for medical assistance is no longer an option. Makayla added, "Even before the uprising, Black anarchists have been making sure
the needs of the community are met while those needs were being ignored elsewhere."
"It's about building community and transformative justice models so that people actually heal and become better."
Riley offers a similar sentiment, crediting older trans anarchists with providing them housing when they were homeless after leaving an
abusive situation as a teenager. The broader anarchist community also offered them food and clothing and helped them find a job. "I try to
return the favor when I can, but if it weren't for the anarchists I'm sure I'd be dead by now," Riley says.
After the coronavirus pandemic began, many anarchists provided necessary aid to their neighbors to help them endure. Riley says that the
community "stepped up to distribute food, masks, and hand sanitizer, as well as continued to do needle exchange." They also tell Mic that
anarchists have been "continually ... writing to and supporting prisoners, bailing people out when we can, and of course pushing protests to
be more conflictual."
Summer is far from over, and it seems that the same can be said for the uprisings. The work may look different depending on the city, but at
the end of the day, Black anarchists are striving for a liberation that requires the total upheaval of social order as it stands now. And
while Trump is likely to embark on many more social media tirades against anarchists, Makayla hopes people come to understand that anarchist
tactics "require communication, trust, and compromise."
"It's about building community and transformative justice models so that people actually heal and become better," Makayla said. "We are more
likely to want to bake cookies than light things on fire, but laying down to fascism and racism is complicity."

The 5th conference of the Anarchist Political Organization took place on Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5, 2020 in Athens, in the occupied
territory of Lela Karagianni 37. The two-day process began with an open discussion, in which APO collectives took a stand on politics and
social situation as well as accounts of the organization's activities in the past. Also, the discussion was attended by comrades from the
anarchist student assembly Arodamos and, through a video conference, comrades from the Anarchist Student Group Ataxia in Thessaloniki. ----
The proceedings of the conference continued with the internal discussions between the groups of APO, during which the overall political
movement, the operation of its organs and thematic groups were apologized and the direction of its action and initiatives for the next
period was planned. Having almost 5 years of positive experience, fermenting and actions, increasing our potential through conscious
long-term collaboration, this conference was another field of collective elaboration, to outline our steps for the future. In this context,
the conference decided to postpone (due to a pandemic) the organization of the 3rd APO Freedom Festival to be held in Athens, on September
12 and 13 in Protomagias Square.
In addition, in the context of the discussion on how to expand the means of disseminating our speech in the social field and the
possibilities of interaction with the wider movement, the proposal for the creation of an internet portal gradually began to take shape.
Thus, through the portal landandfreedom.gr, which will start operating in the coming weeks, we are now trying to expand our horizons in the
direction of "building" another tool of counter-information, propaganda and political thinking that goes beyond the finite space of a print
publication. , covering even more needs around the multiple issues posed by the era.
The APO expresses, from the moment of its formation, an open proposal for the anarchists referring to the organized and collective struggle
and the social revolution; a permanent proposal for the political and organizational formation of the anarchist movement. Given that the
repressive campaign of the state is a long-term choice of suffocating restriction of social and class struggles and the spearhead of the
overall attempt to change the social place into a dystopia of exploitation and subjugation and having the assessment of this lurking social
explosion in business, we want to move forward with a political plan that fully addresses the challenges of our times, taking into account
those with whom we walk together and seeking to be on the side of even more. With a study for the organization of the defense against the
invasion of the state and the bosses and having as a horizon the generalized social and class counter-attack. Consistent on the class and
social fronts of struggle that set barriers to the further degradation of our lives today and aiming at the conquest of the only life worth
living: That in the popular councils of the social revolution.
The following are the positions of the collectives

It happens that people evaluate disputes on the basis of compliance. However, such a view is, in our view, too strict and does not take into
account the dynamics of the struggle and capitalist relations themselves. Using the example of the recent CNT-AIT dispute in Cartagena,
Spain, we would like to clarify our view on this subject. The dispute lasted from early April to mid-May. It involved the re-employment of a
Carmen worker and resulted in an international solidarity campaign, in which we also participated during the pandemic in the form of protest
e-mails. According to the CNT-AIT in Cartagena, the dispute was successful even though Carmen was not re-employed. So let's try to think
about it briefly.
Requirement - re-employment
We described the background of the dispute and the request in the article " Call for help - supporting Carmen in her fight for re-employment
" . In short, Carmen worked on a project for the Norwegian Air Shuttle at WebHelp in Malaga. She took unpaid leave in February, but her
personal situation changed quickly, so she asked to return to work. The company confirmed that it would comply, but shortly thereafter began
to ignore it. The CNT-AIT, of which Carmen is a member, therefore entered into the dispute.
The meaning of the international campaign
Thanks to the pressure of an international solidarity campaign involving several sections of the International Workers' Association (MAP
www.iwa-ait.org), WebHelp suddenly began to communicate promptly and solve the problem. Later, the company even offered Carmen a position in
Barcelona, although in reality it was a job for another company and our friend would lose her seniority, which she refused to accept.
Mass redundancies
The coronacrisis subsequently affected the development of the dispute more significantly. Norwegian canceled projects in Spain and other
European countries, which meant the loss of an important client for WebHelp and eventually proceeded to release most of the people. And he
also closed offices in Malaga and Alicante.
How to define a successful dispute
However, according to the CNT-AIT, this was a successful dispute and Carmen and the local organization in Cartagena were very grateful for
their help. We wondered what their reasons for such an assessment were. According to the CNT-AIT, there are several:
* Through pressure activities, they were able to force the company to listen to Carmen's demands, even during her unpaid leave.
* Compared to her colleagues, she was in a better position due to the dispute and also received an alternative offer (although she
rejected it).
* At the time of the dispute, Carmen was in a predicament because she was stuck in a legal problem concerning entitlement to
unemployment benefit. Although this is not a direct positive effect of the protests during the dispute, Carmen was regularly fired after the
closure of WebHelp's offices and will be entitled to unemployment benefit plus she will receive compensation in the amount of 20 working
days for each year she has worked for the company. We understand that, at the time of the corona crisis in Spain, such a development can
also be considered good news.
* Carmen called on some of the colleagues and inquired about the dispute. They regretted that they had not been able to organize before
the crisis.
* The dispute kicked Carmen and the local CNT-AIT in Cartagena into further action. The dispute did not end in disillusionment with the
failure to meet the direct request, but strengthened the individuals and the organization into another fight.
How would you rate such a dispute? From our point of view, it was achieved mainly that the subject in the fight itself (Carmen and the
Union) came out of the dispute stronger. It is also obvious that only at the moment when the organization became involved in the dispute
(and an international campaign was launched), the company began to react and came up with suggestions on how to resolve the situation.
Although Carmen did not comply and rejected them, it was clear that the company did not invent these proposals just to get rid of Carmen by
any stupidity. All these facts clearly prove the meaning of organizing and fighting.
At the same time, they prove that such a struggle strikes the limits of capitalist relations. Does it make sense to fight for something when
one crisis is enough and we lose our jobs? Does it make sense in such a system to really think about social change and the struggle for a
non-capitalist society without the existence of a state? As an anarcho-syndicalist organization, we are interested in these issues, because
the seemingly economic struggle always has a political dimension. Therefore, it should not be just a matter of constantly repeating the
struggle for improvement, but of replacing capitalist society with another society in which we will not have to constantly solve the basic
problems of living and survival.
There are various situations that prevent us from achieving our specific requirements. Given the existing balance of power, we really can't
influence some things. However, this does not necessarily mean that there is no room to fight and organize. This does not mean that we
cannot achieve anything at all. Organizing is full of fluctuations, obvious successes and losses. However, if the struggle strengthens us,
it is difficult to talk about complete defeat. We will constantly come across the boundaries of our human and objective capacities. However,
it is important that each fight prepares us better for the others.
However, it is not even a matter of making absurd demands and then claiming that, although we did not achieve them, it was an interesting
adventure that taught us a lot and we continue to enthusiastically. Our demands should always be achievable, and this is how we approach
them in the disputes we have. In our case, too, Carmen was an achievable request, and although Carmen failed, neither she nor the local
CNT-AIT group lost. In our opinion, the loss looks different.
Involvement in disputes
Carmen's dispute is also an example of the importance of engaging in disputes. Our friends from Cartagena put it nicely in the original article:
Honestly, we have no words to express how grateful we are for all your cooperation and support. The wave of messages, comments and emails is
amazing! At national and international level!
All support, all actions against the company paid off. Just 24 hours after the start of the campaign, the company contacted us and expressed
a good will to correct this problem, which once again confirms that the direct actions WORK!
Once again, a million thanks to the whole CNT-AIT Cartagena for supporting Carmen, you have all shown that we can be proud to be part of the
MAP.
We also want to thank the people in Slovakia for sending protest e-mails. It always means a lot to us and, as you can see, this form of
solidarity really helps.

[Fighters of the Tekosîna Anarsîst unit sent a strong message to the Russian anarchists in the wake of the Network case. We have received
the text by email and are happy to publish it. The "Anarchist Struggle" is an association of volunteer anarchists from around the world who
are taking part in the revolution in Rojava with arms in hand. -- Avtonom.org] ---- We followed the Network case until the very end of the
trial. We wish our comrades to be strong and use the time in prison for learning, self-education, and also to maintain and strengthen the
revolutionary spirit and human dignity. Come out of this ordeal stronger than before. We wish everyone to be released as soon as possible.
Torture can break, injure, and kill a person, but it will never kill our ideas. We know that difficult dilemmas have arisen during the
process. We also know that many people stopped supporting certain persons involved in the case because of their actions, views and decisions
before and during the Network case. Now that the trial is over, we want to wish something to our comrades from Russia.
Resolution of contradictions
All of us and, in particular, comrades from the post-Soviet space, need to analyze the Network case and learn from its contradictions. This
process was devastating for many people and took up a lot of resources. Now the comrades need to be able to become stronger than before and
maintain their fortitude. We all need to think about how to deal with the events and consequences of this case as a movement responsible for
its comrades, not just as individuals and groups of friends. Repression is part of our reality in the struggle for a stateless society. We
should expect them and be prepared for them.
It also means that we should not indulge in the illusion that we can avoid reprisals from the Russian or other state if we "behave well"
from their point of view, "do not act badly" so that we are not imprisoned. Whatever we do, comrades, we will not be good for the Russian or
any other state. And this is not what we should strive for. We should abandon the categories and dichotomies of legality and illegality
established by law. In the course of all the processes in recent years, and in everyday life, the people of Russia have faced injustice from
the corrupt legal system. Instead of legality, they should be guided much more by a deep sense of legitimacy. Many of our comrades can
understand this very well after the Network case. As soon as we are fighting for a change in the country, this path will require many
sacrifices and dedication in the confrontation with the police state in Russia. And this means that even more comrades will go to prisons
and even more contradictions and challenges will arise before us. We must be prepared for them and be able to overcome problems like the
ones we saw in the Network case by meeting them face to face, and not let them introduce discord between our comrades and undermine our
culture and solidarity.
We must be able to fight for real change in a long revolutionary organizational process. Its scope is wider than the length of our lives.
To do this, we need to find solutions to the conflicts, contradictions and divisions that have occurred over the past ten years in the
Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian anarchist environment.
This environment should be less of a "stage" and begin to develop as a movement. We already know that it cannot be a political party, but it
must also stop reproducing the toxic relationships that are present in capitalist society. This movement cannot be authoritarian.
It must have autonomous feminine and non-masculine structures that will ensure inclusiveness, diversity of life experiences and solutions to
the oppression faced by women and LGBTQIAs. Not at the liberal or parliamentary level, but at the social, liberation and radical level.
The topic of patriarchy is one of the main problems of anarchist movements in post-Soviet countries and should be dealt with as a
fundamental problem in our society.
At the same time, people in Russia are faced with a brutal police state and its inherited ex-Gulag prison system, monstrous and absurd
criminal trials and the realities of survival under capitalism. Over the years, we have seen the growth of conservatism and chauvinism as
the Orthodox Church strengthens and the hegemony of the political regime of the Russian state.
To be able to survive and create a revolutionary movement, we need to develop effective libertarian mechanisms of liberation. We cannot
fight against each other, instead we need to build comradeship and fight together for a better and freer life. Because of these and many
other problems mentioned above, we can feel lonely, alien, divorced from the preparation of the revolution. And when the police knock on our
door, we will not be ready for this, since we do not have a strong movement behind our back. A movement that can provide meaning and strong
motivation to fight and defend your principles when faced with the state machine. For this, struggle must also be accessible to people with
different capabilities and different needs.
If this does not happen, then in the next waves of repression we will see more Russian comrades leaving the country because of these
repressions, unable to rely on some organized movement to protect themselves. In addition, we need to develop a different approach and
become the fighters who will create such a movement. Without a fighting wing, we cannot have long-lived and strong organization and
movement. And without organization, without movement, we will not have a fighting wing - only individual people who will fight like
semi-isolated participants in the "scene" or a group of friends until they burn out like matches. As a result, this leads to the fact that
people give up dreams of revolution, partnership and the struggle for a free life, abandoning this struggle to protect their privacy and
personal survival under capitalism.
Need to understand and practice self-defense
Russia needs a strong movement that will provide a solid political and social base for people's self-organization. He needs a solid
political foundation and perspective, a thorough analysis and understanding of the current realities and situation. In Russia and other
post-Soviet countries, it is impossible to ignore the fundamental problems of the prison and judicial systems, patriarchy and misogynistic,
homophobic violence, fierce struggle in the economic realities of capitalism and its impact on the environment. The reality in which we live
is shaped by these and many other problems, such as Russian colonialism, and we need this understanding to become a coherent, interconnected
basis for the struggle. On this basis, we want to recognize cultural, linguistic, physical, material and spiritual patterns as equal
dimensions of resistance. This opens up new dimensions and new areas for struggle. How do we rethink self-defense if we recognize that the
existence of the state and its institutions, patriarchal ideas in everyday relations, and the power of coercion are themselves social war?
We need to make self-defense the core of our revolutionary culture. Creating mechanisms that prevent hierarchies from emerging and empower
communal structures is self-defense. When we experience repression, protect people trapped in the millstones of the state apparatus and
create networks of mutual assistance, we are engaged in self-defense. Self-defense squads and collective physical defense units are probably
the most widely recognized form of self-defense. that the existence of the state and its institutions, patriarchal ideas in everyday

When we are able to forge strong community bonds and care for each other with greater confidence in our abilities, we lay the foundation for
self-defense. By creating autonomous feminine and non-binary structures to ensure inclusiveness and the active eradication of patriarchal,
capitalist traits in ourselves and our fellows, we fight the most powerful enemy within us for self-defense and camaraderie. Kinship and
close connection with the land and nature in all its forms, its preservation is self-defense.
Remembering our lost comrades or protecting other people, nature and society, as well as supporting those who have been imprisoned, is
self-defense.
Strong spiritual, mental and physical health is fundamental to self-defense, as are ways to help us heal, recover, and reconcile with
ourselves and with the communities around us. Creating your own propaganda, media and communication channels is an extremely important
aspect of self-defense. Learning and practice to acquire skills is essential to the success of self-defense. And sometimes the most
effective self-defense is offense.
In conclusion, we would like to wish success and strength to our comrades from the post-Soviet countries. Take care of each other so that we
can all be strong together! No constitutions or laws, no states or their leaders can give freedom, justice and equality to people.
We can only create them ourselves.
