Dear friends,
She's an adult woman — 38 years old — and a multi-millionaire popstar. It might seem difficult to sympathize with someone who seems so powerful, but every day is a surreal nightmare in which she's treated like a child, locked up in her own home, with all her rights stripped away. Under the tight supervision and control of a conservatorship, Britney Spears is not allowed to get married, see her own children, refuse medications, vote, communicate with the outside world, drive a car, or leave her home. Upwards of 99% of her earnings are immediately taken away, and she's not even allowed to see where they're going. And if she wants to protest her conditions? Well that's too bad, because she's also barred from hiring an attorney.
This all started back in 2007 when Britney was going through a highly publicized divorce and mental health crisis. Seeing a sparkling, golden opportunity, Britney's father rushed in. Claiming the 26-year-old was afflicted with "early onset dementia" that rendered her utterly incompetent, he won something called a "conservatorship" that gave him complete and unlimited control over both his daughter and her $138 million annual income. Conservatorships are designed for people who are extremely old or ill and unable to make safe decisions about their lives, such as Alzheimer's patients. Something as serious and as infantilizing as this legal mechanism should never be taken lightly.
It has been 12 years since that time. For those 12 years, Britney Spears has been kicked out of the driver's seat of her own life, and if we don't speak out, that could turn into a life-long sentence. While Britney has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, that is nowhere near the same thing as dementia. Struggling with depression, anxiety, bipolar, or any other type of emotional pain shouldn't automatically categorize anyone as lesser humans whose lives and empowerment are ripped away from them. If you've ever had a mental health crisis before, this could be you. No person should be treated like this. Sign the petition to demand an end to Britney Spears's conservatorship now!
Thank you for all that you do,
