When she was only one year old, Montessa the chimpanzee was sold to a U.S. government laboratory specializing in experimental research. For 39 years, she was subjected to secret experiments, most of which the public still is not privvy to. One of the only things we know about her time in the lab is that she has given birth to baby chimps on four occasions. She has been pregnant five. Then, five years ago, it seemed she would finally be spared from this nightmare — but it isn't quite over yet.
In 2015, the government halted all biomedical research on Montessa and her companion chimps, and sent federally-owned chimpanzees to live out the remainder of their days at a special sanctuary in Louisiana. But not Montessa. Along with 38 of her fellow animals, she was deemed "too frail" to move, meaning she's still locked in the same trauma-filled chambers where unspeakable things happened to her. Every day, she must relive her pain. Even worse, many medical and animal experts have said there's no reason to deprive her of life at the sanctuary. Sign the petition urging the National Institutes of Health to finally give its retired research chimpanzees the care they deserve! The government must send these animals to a reputable sanctuary where they can heal in peace.
