Dear friends, Poland was never a bulwark for reproductive rights — but now the situation has gotten even more scary. Until recently, a person could only legally access abortion services in one of three specific scenarios: sexual assault or incest, fetal abnormalities, or if the pregnancy endangered their life. On October 22, that list was narrowed even further when the constitutional court of Poland, known as the Constitutional Tribunal, ruled that abortion due to fetal abnormalities was unconstitutional. As a result, Poland is now seeing its largest protests in more than 30 years. But chillingly, this decision cannot be appealed. Because abortion access is so limited in the nation, we have sparse data about the reasons and ways people seek out these desperately-needed services. What we do know is that, in 2019, only 1,100 abortions were legally performed in the country. And of those cases, 1,074 were the result of fetal abnormalities. This means that only 3% of those abortions would be allowed under the new rules — which is a huge and terrifying restriction. Polls show that most Polish citizens oppose these latest limits on abortion rights. Sign the petition to stand with pro-choice protestors in Poland and call on the Polish Government to stop restricting access to safe, legal abortions! Thank you for all that you do,
P.S. To make matters worse, Polish doctors can also refuse to perform a legal abortion or provide contraception due to religious reasons. Tell the Polish government to stop restricting reproductive rights! |
