2021:
The Year To Fight Back

Without any doubt, 2020 was the worst year for LGBTQ-rights in the European Union in the last two decades. Extremist anti-LGBTQ forces have used the COVID-19 pandemic to increase their power over the daily lives of European  citizens.

Politico listed the Polish anti-LGBTQ crusader Jerzy Kwaśniewski as one of the most influential persons of 2020. His influence reached far beyond the Polish border.

In 2020, millions of Polish and Hungarian citizens started living in 'LGBT Free Zones', the Polish police detained over 50 peaceful LGBTQ-activists, Romania tried to ban Gender Studies at its universities, the Dutch education minister defended religious anti-LGBTQ schools and the list goes on and on. Perhaps the most threatening is the 'strategic silence' by the European Council and European Commission against this attacks on our democracy.

This is war. The ultraconservatives have started an offensive against equality and democracy. LGBTQ-activists became Europe's frontline democracy defenders.

In 2021, human rights defenders from all across our Union need to unite to defend everybody's human rights and democracy. We cannot wait any longer!

Hungary's anti-LGBTQ politics is full of hypocrisy. The architect of the Hungarian autocracy was found at a gay sex party in Brussels. Two weeks later, the Hungarian government added anti-LGBTQ amendments to the constitution.

TIME interviewed me on the election of Joe Biden and its impact for LGBTQ-rights in the European Union. I expressed my hopes for change in comparison with the administration of Donald Trump.
