What is the state of human rights in your country? Human Rights Watch just launched our 2021 World Report, our review of human rights trends in more than 100 countries around the globe.
The report also looks at opportunities for the new US leadership to prioritize human rights at home and in its foreign policy. “After four years of Trump’s indifference and often hostility to human rights, including his provoking a mob assault on democratic processes in the Capitol, the Biden presidency provides an opportunity for fundamental change,” said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, in his introductory essay to the World Report 2021.
“Trump’s flouting of human rights at home and his embrace of friendly autocrats abroad severely eroded US credibility abroad. US condemnations of Venezuela, Cuba, or Iran rang hollow when parallel praise was bestowed on Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia or Israel.”
At the dawn of 2020, our world was already in crisis. High and rising economic inequality meant that someone born with few resources could see their basic human rights, like food and decent housing, violated. The Covid-19 pandemic only made things worse.
In 2020, there were devastating floods in the Philippines, destructive wildfires in California, deadly heatwaves in Southern Africa, and a record-breaking hurricane season in Central America. These and other events amplified by climate change are taking a mounting toll on lives and livelihoods, especially of marginalized populations.
More and more women are survivors of a growing wave of online gender-based violence that governments and companies are failing to tackle effectively. In South Korea, we have documented how a combination of rapid technological advances and deep gender inequality is accelerating the spread online of gender-based violence.
