Dear friends, Since the last time we wrote you, we’ve had a whirlwind global campaign calling for the first LGBT equality bill in Japan. Over 100,000 people signed our petition and we delivered it to Tokyo to Japan’s party leaders. We rallied support from athletes, celebrities and business leaders. Activists protested and hosted events during Japan’s annual Rainbow Pride Week celebrations. LGBT activists and allies have been fighting for this bill for over six years.
Now we need your help to get #EqualityActJapan to the finish line.
We are so close to an introduction but members of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Japan’s ruling party, are blocking the bill. Over six months ago, our coalition sent a letter to Japanese Prime Minister Suga calling for his support on #EqualityActJapan. He has yet to respond, and time is running out before the National Diet session closes in Japan. Prime Minister Suga has the power to move the bill forward.
