Australian universities have failed to protect the academic freedom of students from China and of academics who criticize the Chinese Communist Party. Pro-Beijing supporters and the Chinese government have also harassed and intimidated those who express support for democracy movements.
A new report describes Chinese government surveillance of pro-democracy students from the mainland and Hong Kong in Australian universities, leaving many students fearful.
Every pro-democracy student interviewed expressed fears that their activities in Australia could result in Chinese authorities punishing or interrogating their family back home.
