Government authoritarianism will fail to stem the pandemic. By imposing the
health pass, it constrains instead of convincing, which is a short-sightedpolicy. Rather, to advance immunization, we need an incentive based on social
measures. ---- Emmanuel Macron's announcements on July 12 on the health pass and
the related sanctions provoked strong street protests. In many places, the
extreme right and the conspiratorial and openly anti-Semitic movement held the
upper hand, even if the population revolted by the sanitary pass was not limited
to it. The UCL groups which intervene in certain demonstrations do so with a
speech favorable to vaccination, currently the main lever of containment of the
pandemic.
We have to be clear: short-term measures favoring repression and authoritarianism
run the risk of steering into an irreducible anti-vaccine posture a fraction of
the population which is only suspicious or hesitant.
To be relevant, a vaccination strategy must be incentive and based on social reality:
Against the health pass, which is a discriminatory measure which gives the
employers arms;
To strengthen the vaccination campaign, with human and material resources,
particularly in areas where the health situation has been worsened by French
colonial rule;
For a concrete incentive to be vaccinated: days off for the vaccination of
employees, including that of their child (ren); an equivalent monetary incentive
for the unemployed, the homeless, etc.; the possibility of being vaccinated and a
guarantee of non-arrest for undocumented people... So many simple measures and a
minimal cost compared to the public funds swallowed up in aid to businesses...
For the repeal of patents on anti-Covid vaccines, in order to expand production
and vaccination throughout the world, the only hope for a way out of the crisis;
For the socialization of the pharmaceutical industry. It is not tolerable that
this strategic area obeys profit-seeking logic;
For a unified public health service, deployed across all regions, strengthened by
the socialization of private clinics, funded to meet the challenges with massive
and urgent hiring of staff.
A fourth wave is underway. If we continue this way, it probably won't be the
last. Due to the destabilization of ecosystems and biodiversity, we risk
increasingly violent and frequent epidemic crises. While there is no quick fix,
there is one certainty: we must get out of capitalism urgently.
