The multinational capitalist Meta, owner of Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp among
others, announced on November 2, 2021 that it will soon deactivate facialrecognition on Facebook, including for users who had activated it voluntarily[3]. ---- The ban on facial recognition has been part of the demands of thedigital freedoms movement and the UCL for many years. On the one hand, we canunderstand this announcement as a victory for our camp, torn off thanks to thepressure exerted on Meta by the revelations of the whistleblower Frances Haugen,former Facebook employee at the origin of the "Facebook Files" [1]. An alert thatcomes on top of so many others - large-scale tax evasion, collaboration with theNSA in US state surveillance programs, involvement in the Cambridge Analyticascandal, and so on - and which would therefore be the drop of water that brokethe camel's back.But we can also understand this announcement as ballast dropped at little cost tocreate a diversion as the storm rages around Mark Zuckerberg and his relatives.By announcing this self-inflicted ban (and therefore perfectly reversible), theboss of one of the richest and most powerful groups in the world presents aconciliatory face, close to the concerns of Internet users and more generally ofthe population worried about the incessant setbacks in terms of of publicfreedoms, and hopes to have nothing more to concede. But we are not fooled. Do wehave the slightest idea of the duration of this ban ? Of its financial cost forthe company ? Of its real reach in Facebook, with the exceptions alreadymentioned ? Why the rest of the services of the "metaverse»As well as theresearch and development sector on the DeepFace algorithm are they not concerned[2]? Is this pseudo-ban supposed to make us forget that Facebook has largelyparticipated in the trivialization of facial recognition ?The Libertarian Communist Union continues to call for a ban on facialrecognition. A real ban, imposed from the bottom up, by the people on thecapitalists, and affecting all the companies of surveillance capitalism, whetherAmerican, European or elsewhere.
