community, in São José dos Campos, in the interior of São Paulo. Nearly 2,000
families were victims of police brutality as they resisted repossession of the
land they had occupied for eight years, as part of the struggle for housing
across the country. ---- The families who occupied the land were victims of the
brutality of the Military Police and all sectors of the ruling classes, after
they made it clear that they would not peacefully accept the eviction. The
mainstream press, the judiciary, city hall and state government had a unique
discourse in the sense of criminalizing the struggle for housing and the
solidarity of other sectors of the oppressed classes.

In December 2011, the Court ordered the repossession of the property where the
families were installed, which was already established as a neighborhood. This
decision was reversed the following month, but in the early hours of January 22,
2012, a Sunday, the families were surprised by the presence of a real war
operation: 2,000 military police, helicopters, cavalry, and many bombs. and
rubber bullets, in addition to support from the municipal civil guard. Women,
children and the elderly were attacked even though they did not pose any threat.
The houses were destroyed before the families were able to remove all their
belongings.

For the operation to be successful, the PM infiltrated agents on the eve of
reintegration to identify community leaders, a technique worthy of the military
dictatorship. Among the violence denounced were torture and sexual abuse against
the occupants. The brutality was such that it gained international prominence,
but no one was responsible for the crimes of the State, in the service of Capital
and large landowners.

The area had been abandoned for 30 years and belonged to the patrimony of the
company Selecta S/A, which had already declared bankruptcy. As the company owed
the speculator Naji Nahas, the judiciary decreed that the property would be the
payment. After the eviction of impoverished families, the land of one million
square meters was abandoned again in the last ten years, without any social
function and without paying the taxes due.

With the eviction, the residents were housed in precarious structures set up by
the city of São José dos Campos, with the right even to spoiled food. They won
affordable housing just five years later, in a complex built on the edge of the
city, far from the central region. The creditor Naji Nahas, accused of several
financial crimes, was recently seen at a dinner with former president Michel
Temer, political leaders and figures in the mainstream press. The mayor at the
time, Eduardo Cury, from the PSDB, is now a federal deputy. And the then governor
Geraldo Alckmin, who ordered the police operation, is currently quoted as a
candidate for vice president on the ticket headed by Lula, from the PT.

It is worth remembering that the Pinheirinho Massacre took place in the midst of
a whole policy of evictions and violation of basic rights, which had the PT
federal government as a major guarantor. One of its main consequences was the
developmentalist project carried out by the PT, with violence against native
peoples, riverside dwellers, favela residents, among others. In the name of
economic development and guaranteeing mega-events, PT governments encouraged
state violence, stifling resistance to the struggle for land and criminalizing
organized popular movements.

Ten years later, we see the tragedy that these policies have provided. While
speculators, agribusiness and extractivism continue to profit, hundreds of
thousands of people do not have a roof over their heads and live with hunger.
Brazil suffers from an absurd housing deficit. Data from 2018 states that there
are 6.9 million homeless families, while there are 6 million empty properties.
This situation has certainly worsened with the pandemic, revealing the cruelty of
a system that prefers closed properties to sheltered people in the name of real
estate speculation. The way out for these families is urban occupations.

We honor the fighters of Pinheirinho who bravely resisted until the last
consequences, and we rescue the words we said at the time, as the Organized
Anarchism Forum:

As a people, we take the side of those oppressed who, without a place to raise
their children and sleep protected from the cold, find a home in unworthy
shelters and will fight with all their strength, sticks and stones to defend what
is rightfully theirs. . No fear of weapons, false speeches or lies that we are
tired of hearing!
