Faced with the militaristic escalation that is being experienced in Eastern
Europe, from CNT we issue the following statement: ---- The interstate conflictcreated and sustained in Eastern Europe responds solely to the interests of theminorities that control the resources. NATO's military threats against Russia andMoscow's response by mobilizing troops to its border with Ukraine cannot beexplained without the underlying dispute over access to the natural resources ofthe Arctic, especially natural gas, and over trade routes with China. Thisdispute over control of resources directly affects the social majority who seehow their livelihoods become more expensive in a conflict between internationaloligarchies who want to share the spoils. The working class of European countriesare watching our living conditions deteriorate while being used as hostages.The attitude of the Spanish State to actively participate in the militarymaneuvers in the Black Sea and the Baltic countries, as well as to host the NATOsummit in June 2022, is an insult and an offense to a working class that activelyfights against militarism for decades. We fight against joining NATO, againstcompulsory military service, against participation in the Iraq War. Theparticipation of the Spanish military in the war escalation against Russia iscompletely inadmissible, as was the aggression against Iraq in 2003, whoseconsequences in the form of attacks we know well. In the end, as we well know, itis the working class who ends up mourning the loss of their loved ones.The Spanish State is advancing in the militarization of social life, usingsoldiers in civilian tasks such as firefighting or contact tracing in thepandemic, which in practice means stripping all labor and trade union rights fromthose who perform essential functions for the society. The budget earmarked formilitaristic and warlike purposes is justified in this way, but let us not forgetthat every euro that is spent on the frigates that today serve NATO in the BlackSea is a euro that is not spent on infrastructure, health, education, pensions orany other public service.
