The video game industry is known for its abusive practices and its high level of
exploitation : low wages, pressure on employees, unsustainable schedules andpaces... but for a long time, collectives of workers have tried to make move thelines, by organizing themselves according to cooperative or democratic models,trying to prove that none of these conditions are necessary to make good games.The best known example is perhaps the Bordeaux studio Motion Twin, organized inSCOP since 2004, which distributes its development tools under free license andcreated in 2018 Dead Cells, a critically acclaimed game.Other cooperatives have formed and are offering more and more games to thegeneral public: Pixel Pushers Union 512, an American cooperative, has developedTonight We Riot. In a world dominated by a merciless capitalist system and itspolice under orders, embody a revolutionary crowd ready to fight to obtain theirfreedom. The Canadian cooperative studio Lucid Tales has announced Sally, with amore peaceful atmosphere and centered around the crew of a flying boat.The Itch.io online store promotes ethical and independent projects, and regularlyorganizes events to support social or political causes, such as a sale of gamesto benefit Black Lives Matter in 2021.
