As the world enters the third year of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are taking a moment to look back at the last two years and how the pandemic has affected peoples’ lives around the world. At least 6 million people have died due to the pandemic and millions more are grappling with “long Covid” or disability following bouts with the disease. Millions of children saw their education interrupted or abruptly ended by pandemic-related school closures. A half billion people were forced into poverty or saw their poverty deepen, while billions of others are living through a pandemic-induced economic slowdown. Meanwhile, the inequities that have characterized the past two years are being further entrenched. There are huge disparities in vaccine access globally, with more than 85 percent of people living in low-income countries still waiting for their first dose. The pandemic is not over. Ukraine UpdatesTwo weeks after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the situation for Ukrainian civilians has become increasingly dire. While millions have fled to neighboring countries, Human Rights Watch this week also reported on what life is like for those stuck in besieged cities and towns as Russian troops advance across the country. Many civilians face a lack of heat, water, and electricity, while for many, access to safety has been largely cut off. Thousands of anti-war protesters in Russia, meanwhile, have been arrested or beaten by police as Russian authorities crack down on any dissent related to the war in Ukraine.
